Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) Services

Search stopped returning links and started returning answers. AEO is how you make sure the answer is assembled from your content — with your name attached — instead of scraped from whoever happened to structure their page better.

THE SHORT ANSWER

Chalk Labs provides answer engine optimization (AEO) services: structuring content, schema and entity signals so your pages become the extracted answer in Google AI Overviews, featured snippets, voice results and AI chatbots. We combine answer-block engineering, FAQ schema and citation tracking, with programs starting around $3k/month.

What is answer engine optimization?

AEO is the craft of formatting truth for extraction. Answer engines — Google's AI Overviews and featured snippets, voice assistants, and chat interfaces — don't present ten options; they present one synthesized answer built from sources that made themselves easy to quote. AEO ensures those sources are yours.

Mechanically, that means three things. First, answer-block writing: every important query gets a direct, self-contained 40–60 word answer high on the page, before the elaboration. Second, machine-readable structure: FAQ, HowTo and Organization schema, clean heading hierarchies phrased as real questions, tables and lists where extraction favors them. Third, trust signals: named authors, cited sources and corroborated claims, because answer engines are increasingly conservative about who they'll quote for anything consequential.

Why do answer boxes matter more than rankings now?

Because they sit above everything and increasingly replace everything. AI Overviews appear on more than half of Google queries, and when one appears, click-through to classic results drops sharply — studies have measured organic CTR falling by a third or more on affected queries. Position one under an answer box is the new position four.

The compensating prize: sources cited inside the answer capture both the click that remains and something arguably more valuable — attributed authority. Users who see your brand cited as the answer's source arrive pre-trusting. And the same structural work that wins AI Overviews wins ChatGPT and Perplexity citations, voice results and featured snippets simultaneously. One engineering effort, five answer surfaces. That efficiency is the entire case for AEO as a discrete discipline.

What does a Chalk Labs AEO engagement include?

We start by mining your search data and category questions to build the answer inventory: every question your buyers ask that an engine currently answers without you. Each gets scored by intent value and winnability, producing a prioritized build list.

Then we engineer, page by page, and measure extraction — not just rankings.

  • Answer inventory and competitive answer-box audit
  • Answer-block rewriting: direct 40–60 word answers positioned for extraction
  • Schema deployment: FAQ, HowTo, Organization, Product and Article markup
  • Question-form information architecture across headings and internal links
  • Trust engineering: authorship, citations, entity consistency
  • Monthly extraction tracking: snippets won, AI Overview citations, chatbot mentions

How do AEO, SEO and GEO fit together?

Think of them as three layers of one visibility system. SEO gets your pages crawled, indexed and ranked — without it, nothing else has raw material. AEO makes those pages extractable — the direct answers, schema and structure that let engines quote you accurately. GEO extends the fight off your own site — building the third-party evidence and entity authority that make generative engines recommend you even when they never crawl your page at answer time.

We run all three on one retainer because separating them creates seams where value leaks: an SEO agency that ignores answer structure, an AEO vendor that can't do the digital PR that GEO requires. The stack shares one strategy, one measurement framework and one monthly report. Programs start around $3k/month, scoped by how many of the three layers your situation actually needs — sometimes the audit shows you only need one.

Questions we hear about this

No — schema is necessary but nowhere near sufficient. Engines extract answers that are directly stated, self-contained and corroborated. A page with perfect markup wrapped around vague, meandering copy still loses to a competitor who states the answer plainly in fifty words. Structure and substance have to ship together.

Commercial-intent questions where an answer box already exists and the current occupant is weak — those flip fastest and pay best. Then definitional and comparison queries in your category, which feed both snippets and chatbot citations. We score your full answer inventory by value and winnability before writing anything.

The answer economy reduces clicks whether you participate or not — abstaining just means the reduced clicks go to whoever is cited. Cited sources retain the remaining click share, gain branded-search lift from attribution, and reach buyers through voice and chat surfaces that never produced clicks anyway. Participation beats protest.

Featured snippet and AI Overview movement often shows within four to ten weeks of restructuring, since you're typically re-optimizing pages Google already indexes rather than building authority from zero. Chatbot citation shifts follow as retrieval systems refresh. We report extraction wins monthly against the baseline audit.
