What Is Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)?

Every question your buyer asks gets exactly one spoken answer, one snippet, one AI response. AEO is the fight for that single slot.

THE SHORT ANSWER

Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring content so search and AI systems can extract it as the direct answer to a question — in featured snippets, People Also Ask, voice assistants and chatbot responses. Core tactics: question-form headings, 40–60 word answer blocks, FAQ schema and prompt-aligned phrasing.

How does AEO work?

Answer engines do not read pages the way people do; they hunt for a tight, self-contained passage that resolves the query. AEO engineers those passages deliberately: the page opens with a direct 40–60 word answer, headings are phrased as the questions people actually ask, and each answer stands alone without needing surrounding context.

FAQPage schema then labels these Q&A pairs explicitly. Even where Google has trimmed FAQ rich results, the structured pairs are still parsed by AI engines during answer synthesis — which is why FAQ blocks remain one of the highest-leverage AEO assets on commercial pages.

AEO vs SEO vs GEO — what's the difference?

SEO earns you a position on a results page. AEO earns you the extracted answer for a specific question. GEO earns you brand mentions and citations inside generative AI responses. They form a stack, not a menu: rankable pages (SEO) feed extractable answers (AEO) which feed model-level brand associations (GEO).

In practice the boundary between AEO and GEO blurs — both reward answer-first formatting and clean structure. The useful distinction is scope: AEO is page-level and question-level; GEO is entity-level and reputation-level.

  • SEO: rank the page
  • AEO: win the extracted answer for a question
  • GEO: become the brand AI engines recommend

Which queries are worth AEO effort?

Pricing and definitional queries convert best. 'How much does X cost' pages are the most under-served and most-cited commercial content in nearly every B2B niche — buyers ask AI assistants pricing questions constantly, and most vendors hide their numbers. Publishing honest ranges makes you the citable source and pre-qualifies leads in one move.

Definitional queries ('what is GEO', 'what is a TGE') build entity association: if the model learned the definition from you, it associates the concept with your brand permanently.

How Chalk Labs implements AEO

Every commercial page we ship carries an answer block above the fold, question-form H2s, exactly-phrased FAQs with schema, and citable numbers — the page you are reading follows the template. On retainers we pair this with quarterly content refreshes, because answer engines prefer fresh sources, and monthly prompt-set tracking so AEO wins show up as measured citation rates rather than vibes.

Questions we hear about this

Yes — the same formatting that used to win snippets now wins AI answer extraction in ChatGPT, Perplexity and AI Overviews. The target moved; the technique transferred. Answer-first structure is the single most durable optimization of the AI-search era.

Every commercial and question-targeting page, yes. Phrase questions the way users prompt AI assistants ('how much does crypto PR cost'), keep answers 40–80 words, and mark them up with FAQPage JSON-LD. Skip it only on thin pages where forced FAQs would add noise.

Mine your own sales calls first — the questions prospects ask before buying are the ones they ask AI engines. Supplement with People Also Ask scraping, Reddit threads in your niche, and AI-assistant prompt testing. Prioritize pricing, comparison and 'is X worth it' questions.

No. The answer-first structure is just journalism's inverted pyramid applied to search: conclusion first, expansion after. Pages built this way tend to read better for humans too, because they respect the reader's time.
