Best Tools to Check If AI Bots Can Crawl Your Website
No single tool answers the question. A robots.txt checker tells you what you allow. Server logs or a CDN dashboard tell you which bots actually arrive. A live test tells you whether a firewall turns them away. Start with a free checker, then confirm with logs. Disclosure: Chalk Labs makes one of the free checkers.
- Three different questions hide behind this one: what your rules say, what bots really do, and whether a firewall blocks them.
- A robots.txt checker is the fastest first step, but it cannot see firewalls or prove any bot has visited.
- Server logs and CDN dashboards are the only way to see real bot visits.
- Allowing a bot only removes one reason not to be cited. It does not earn a citation.
Which tool should you use to check AI bot access?
Use a robots.txt checker first, then confirm with your server logs or CDN dashboard. The checker is quick and free. The logs show what really happens. Together they answer most owner questions in under an hour.
Here, an AI crawler is a program that fetches web pages for an AI company. A robots.txt file is a plain text file at the root of your site that tells crawlers which paths they may fetch. A CDN is a service that sits in front of your site to speed it up and filter traffic.
Disclosure: Chalk Labs makes the free AI Crawler Checker listed below, so we have a commercial interest. We describe what each option can and cannot do, and we do not rank products. We did not test third-party paid scanners for this page, so we name none.
What are the three questions a crawler check must answer?
The first question is what your rules allow. Your robots.txt file and any bot settings in your hosting or CDN panel decide this. A checker can read them from outside.
The second question is whether bots actually visit. Only your own records can show this. Server logs list every request with its user agent, which is the name a bot gives itself. A CDN dashboard shows the same in charts.
The third question is whether something blocks the bots despite your rules. A firewall can refuse a bot that robots.txt welcomes. Perplexity says a web application firewall may block its bots and recommends matching both the user agent and its published IP ranges 3. Anthropic warns that blocking its IP addresses can stop its bots reading robots.txt at all 2.
Which bots should the tool report on?
A useful tool names each bot separately, because one company runs several. OpenAI documents OAI-SearchBot for ChatGPT search, GPTBot for model training and ChatGPT-User for visits triggered by a person. Each robots.txt setting is independent of the others 1.
Anthropic documents ClaudeBot for training, Claude-User for fetches when someone asks a question and Claude-SearchBot for improving search results 2. Perplexity documents PerplexityBot for search and Perplexity-User for user-triggered visits 3. Google uses a robots.txt token called Google-Extended to control use for Gemini training and grounding, and says it does not affect inclusion in Google Search 7.
Treat any tool that reports only one verdict for all AI bots with caution. Blocking a training bot does not remove you from search answers, and the reverse also holds. Our guide to training bots vs search bots explains the split.
How do the main checking options compare?
The table compares four ways to check, by what each can see. It describes the type of tool, not a ranked list of products.
| Question | Free robots.txt or AI crawler checker | Google Search Console robots.txt report | Server logs or CDN dashboard | Live test with curl |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Shows your robots.txt rules per AI bot | Yes, if the tool lists AI bots by name | Shows the file and parse errors, for Google only | No | No |
| Shows real bot visits | No | No | Yes | No |
| Catches firewall or CDN blocks | Only partly, from outside | No | Yes, as blocked or error responses | Partly: tests user-agent rules, not IP rules |
| Skill needed | None | Low | Medium | Medium |
| Cost | Free | Free | Often included with hosting or CDN | Free |
| Time to first answer | Minutes | Minutes | An hour or more | Minutes |
| Main blind spot | Cannot prove a bot ever visited | Does not name AI bots | Needs access and history | A spoofed user agent is not the real bot |
What can a free robots.txt checker tell you, and what can't it?
A checker reads your public robots.txt and reports what it says for each named bot. The Chalk Labs AI Crawler Checker does this, and it also reads the raw HTML of your homepage to see whether text exists before any JavaScript runs. It reads the homepage only, does not see firewall rules, and cannot tell you whether any bot has visited.
That raw HTML test matters. Vercel's December 2024 study of its network traffic found that, apart from Google's Gemini and Apple's AppleBot, the major AI crawlers it tested did not render JavaScript 8. The study is old, so crawler behaviour may have changed. Still, a page whose text appears only after scripts run is a risk. See client-side vs server-side rendering.
Other free checkers exist, and they differ in which bots they list. Before trusting one, test it on a file you know. Add a rule that blocks one named bot and see whether the tool reports it.
Is Google Search Console enough?
Search Console is enough for Google, not for other AI companies. Its robots.txt report lists the files Google found, when it last fetched them, their size and any parsing problems. It also lets you request a recrawl after a fix. It is available for Domain properties and for URL-prefix properties set at the site root (no path), and a file that returns a 404 error for 30 days drops off the report 5.
Keep in mind what robots.txt does. Google says it manages crawler traffic, is not a way to keep a page out of Google, and cannot force a crawler to obey it 4. Compliance is voluntary. So a clean report means your file is readable, not that every bot behaves.
How do server logs and CDN dashboards help?
They show who really came. Cloudflare's AI Crawl Control, for example, gives a dashboard of AI crawler activity, lets you allow or block crawlers one by one, and tracks which crawlers follow your robots.txt. Cloudflare says it is available on all its plans 6. If your CDN is different, look for a bot or crawler report in its panel.
Without a CDN, search your raw access logs for the bot names above. A line that shows OAI-SearchBot with a success status, from an IP in OpenAI's published ranges, means that bot reached the page. A line with a 403 status means something refused it. Our guide to monitoring AI bot activity in server logs gives the exact steps.
Remember that a name in a log can be faked. Both OpenAI and Perplexity publish IP ranges, so you can confirm a visit came from them 13.
- curl -s -o /dev/null -w "%{http_code}\n" -A "OAI-SearchBot" https://example.com/
- curl -s -o /dev/null -w "%{http_code}\n" -A "PerplexityBot" https://example.com/
- curl -s -o /dev/null -w "%{http_code}\n" -A "Claude-SearchBot" https://example.com/
- 200 = the page was served. 403 or 429 = something refused that name.
- A 200 here does not prove the real bot gets in, because firewalls may also check IP addresses.
How do you choose, and when should you combine tools?
Choose by the question you have. If you do not know your own rules, use a checker. If your rules look right but you suspect bots never arrive, read the logs. If you use a firewall or bot-protection service, add the live test and check its allow list.
For most small sites, the order is checker, then curl test, then logs once a month. A larger site with a CDN should add the CDN dashboard. Allow time for changes: OpenAI says search results can take about 24 hours to adjust after a robots.txt update 1.
Do not overrate the result. Even with every bot admitted, you may not be cited, because content quality and trust decide that. Our full crawl check guide and robots.txt rules guide cover the next steps.
Frequently asked questions
How do I know if ChatGPT can crawl my website?
Check that your robots.txt does not block OAI-SearchBot, the crawler OpenAI documents for ChatGPT search 1. Then look in your logs for that name, and check that no firewall refuses it. A checker covers the first step only.
Does blocking GPTBot hide me from ChatGPT?
Not according to OpenAI. GPTBot relates to model training, and OAI-SearchBot is the separate crawler for search features. OpenAI says each setting is independent, so you can allow one and disallow the other 1.
Can robots.txt force a bot to stay away?
Are free AI crawler checkers accurate?
They are accurate about what your file says, if they list the bots you care about. They cannot see firewalls or real visits. Test any checker on a rule you know, and confirm important findings in your logs.
How often should I check?
Check after every change to robots.txt, your CDN or your firewall, and once a month otherwise. Search results may take about 24 hours to reflect a robots.txt change 1, so wait a day before judging a fix.
