Best AI SEO Courses and Learning Resources You Can Verify
Start with the official guidance from Google, OpenAI, Anthropic and Perplexity, then take one free course such as Ahrefs Academy's Answer Engine Optimization course, then practise on your own site. Treat paid courses with care: ask for a public syllabus, dated lessons and proof of the teacher's own results. We list only resources we opened.
- Official documentation is the most reliable free starting point, and it is where bot names and rules are defined.
- Ahrefs Academy offers a free 12-lesson Answer Engine Optimization course; Semrush Academy lists AI visibility webinars.
- Sources disagree on tactics such as llms.txt, so learn to read claims critically.
- We give no star ratings because we cannot verify them. Judge any paid course on syllabus, dates and proof.
What is the best way to learn AI SEO?
Read the official sources first, learn the vocabulary from one free course, and then test ideas on a real page. This costs nothing and protects you from paid courses that repeat rumours. The rest of this page lists what we could verify and how to judge what we could not.
AI SEO means making a business easy for tools such as ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google's AI features to find and cite. People also call it AEO (answer engine optimisation) or GEO (generative engine optimisation).
How we chose: we opened every resource below on 2026-10-20 and report only what its page says. We give no star ratings and no rankings, because ratings of courses are easy to fake and we cannot check them. Disclosure: Chalk Labs sells AI SEO services, so we have a commercial interest in this topic.
Which resources can we verify?
The table lists resources by what they are, what they cost and where they fall short. Several come from companies that sell SEO tools, so expect some product focus.
| Resource | Type and publisher | Cost | Best for | Limits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| AI features and your website 10 | Documentation, Google Search Central | Free | What Google says about AI Overviews and AI Mode | Says little about ChatGPT or Perplexity |
| Creating helpful, reliable, people-first content | Documentation, Google Search Central | Free | Quality, bylines and how AI use should be disclosed | General, not AI-specific tactics |
| Overview of OpenAI crawlers | Documentation, OpenAI | Free | Exact bot names and what each controls | Covers OpenAI only |
| Anthropic crawler help article | Help article, Anthropic | Free | Claude bots and how to block or allow them | Covers Anthropic only |
| Perplexity crawlers guide 11 | Documentation, Perplexity | Free | PerplexityBot, Perplexity-User and firewall advice | Covers Perplexity only |
| GEO: Generative Engine Optimization | Research paper, arXiv | Free | The origin of the term GEO and a test method | Tested in a lab setting, not on your site |
| Answer Engine Optimization course | Video course, Ahrefs Academy | Free | How AI search works and getting recommended | Published by an SEO tool vendor |
| SEO Course for Beginners | Video course, Ahrefs Academy | Free | Keyword research, on-page SEO, link building | Classic SEO, not AI-specific |
| AI visibility webinars | Webinars, Semrush Academy | Not stated on the page | Current vendor thinking on AI visibility | Webinars, not a structured course |
What does each type of resource actually offer?
Official documentation gives rules and definitions. OpenAI's page explains that OAI-SearchBot surfaces sites in ChatGPT search, while GPTBot relates to training, and that each setting is independent 6. Anthropic describes ClaudeBot, Claude-User and Claude-SearchBot in its help article 7. These are the best places to check facts about bots.
Ahrefs Academy lists a free Answer Engine Optimization course with 12 lessons and about 1 hour 26 minutes of video. It also lists a free SEO Course for Beginners with 14 lessons and about 2 hours 4. Ahrefs sells SEO software, so the course also teaches its tools. As listed on 2026-10-20, Semrush Academy's page shows AI visibility webinars of 40 minutes to an hour, and it did not list a structured AI SEO course when we looked 5.
Google's guide on people-first content stresses clear authorship, an explanation of how content was made including any AI use, and a main purpose of helping readers, not manipulating rankings 2. That advice applies to every AI SEO tactic you meet.
What does the main GEO research paper show?
It shows that some content changes increased visibility in a lab test, and that results depend on the subject. The paper, "GEO: Generative Engine Optimization" by Aggarwal and colleagues, was first posted in November 2023 and accepted to KDD 2024. It proposes a framework and a benchmark called GEO-bench, and reports visibility gains of up to 40% in generative engine responses. The authors say effectiveness varies by domain 3.
Read that with care. Up to 40% is a best case in a test setup, not a promise for your site 3. AI products have changed since 2023. Use the paper to learn how researchers test claims, not as a recipe.
Why do the best sources disagree, and what should you do?
They disagree because the field is young and no one controls how every AI product works. A clear example is llms.txt. Its proposer, Jeremy Howard, published the idea in September 2024 as a Markdown file at a site's root with a title, summary and links, meant to help language models find key content 8. Google's AI optimisation guide says Google Search does not use llms.txt files, and that no chunking or special schema is needed, though keeping such a file for other services is fine. It also says optimising for generative AI search is still SEO 1.
Both statements can be true. Google speaks for Google's systems. The llms.txt idea targets language models reading your key content. A good course tells you who says what and why, instead of presenting one view as fact.
Our own guide to what llms.txt is lays out the same split. When two sources conflict, test the claim on one page and keep a record.
How do you judge a paid AI SEO course?
Judge it on evidence you can check before paying. Be wary of income promises, countdown timers and testimonials with no names. The US Federal Trade Commission has a rule banning fake or false reviews and testimonials, including AI-generated ones 9. Use the checklist below on any course.
- 1. Is the full syllabus public, with lesson titles and lengths?
- 2. Are lessons dated, and updated since the last big AI product change?
- 3. Does the teacher show their own live sites you can open and test?
- 4. Does the course say what it cannot promise, including rankings and citations?
- 5. Does it cite official documentation for claims about bots and rules?
- 6. Can you preview a lesson before paying?
- 7. Is there a refund policy in writing?
- 8. Are reviews on independent sites, with real names?
- Under 5 points: choose the free route first.
What should you do this week to learn faster?
Pair reading with action on your own site. On day one, run the free AI Crawler Checker and read the bot names in the OpenAI and Anthropic pages. On day two, type a buyer question into the Query Fan-Out Explorer and note the searches it shows.
On day three, take the AI Readiness Score. Then follow a plan such as the 30-day AI SEO sprint. For definitions as you go, start with what AI SEO is.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a free AI SEO course?
Yes. Ahrefs Academy lists a free Answer Engine Optimization course with 12 lessons and about 1 hour 26 minutes of video 4. It comes from an SEO tool company, so expect some product teaching, and pair it with official documentation.
Do I need to pay for an AI SEO certification?
We found no official certification from Google or the AI companies. Ahrefs mentions an optional certification exam for its tool course 4. Employers and clients care more about sites you can show than certificates.
Is the GEO research paper still useful?
It is useful for the idea and the test method. It reports gains of up to 40% in a lab setting and says results vary by domain 3. AI products have changed, so treat the numbers as a ceiling, not a forecast.
Should I follow Google's advice or the llms.txt idea?
Follow Google's advice for Google, which says optimising for AI search is still SEO and that Google Search does not use llms.txt files, though keeping one for other services is fine 1. The llms.txt proposal is meant to help language models find key content 8. If you add one, treat it as a low-cost experiment.
How long does it take to learn the basics?
You can read the key official pages and finish a short course in a few days. Ahrefs' two free courses together run about three and a half hours of video 4. Skill comes from testing on a real site over weeks.
