About your site

Start with the first two fields. Everything else is optional. Jump to the preview.

Say what you do, for whom, and where. This is the first thing an AI tool reads.
Plain paragraphs or lists. Lines that start with # are not allowed here.
Used to check that your links stay on one domain. The button reads your public sitemap.xml and adds up to 40 pages for you to edit. Only this address is sent to our server.

Sections and links

Group your best pages under short headings. Pages that can be skipped belong in a section called Optional, which always goes last in the file.

Where to put it

Your file should be served at /llms.txt on your root domain, as plain text.

  1. Save the text as a file called llms.txt. It must be plain text, not a Word file, a PDF or a web page.
  2. Upload it to the root of your domain, so that it loads at https://yourdomain.com/llms.txt. The proposal also allows a subfolder, but the root is the usual place.
  3. Open that address in a browser. You should see the text of your file, not an error page and not your home page.
  4. Some website builders do not let you add a file to the root. If yours does not, ask your web team or your host.
  5. Review the file when you add or remove an important page. A short file that is kept up to date is better than a long one that is out of date.

Where llms.txt stands today

Adoption is still early. As far as we have verified, no major search provider has confirmed that it uses llms.txt to rank or cite pages, and Google says Google Search ignores it (Google's guide).

It is cheap and harmless to add, so we treat it as a small extra and not as a ranking lever.

Chalk Labs publishes one too. You can read our own llms.txt as an example.

How it works

  • Type your site name and a one-sentence summary. They become the heading and the quoted summary at the top of the file.
  • Group your best pages into short sections, such as Docs, Pricing or Support. Give each link a title, a web address and a one-line note. Pages that can be skipped go in a section called Optional, which always comes last.
  • The file follows the format proposed at llmstxt.org: a # heading with your name, a > summary, then ## sections that each hold a list of links.
  • The file is built in your browser as you type, and nothing is saved. Only if you press the sitemap button do we send your website address to our server, which reads your public sitemap.xml once to suggest pages.
  • We flag missing fields, links that do not start with https, repeated links and links that leave your domain. Items marked Fix must be solved before you can copy or download.

What it cannot tell you

  • It cannot tell you that any AI tool will read the file. As far as we have verified, no major search provider has confirmed that it uses llms.txt to rank or cite pages.
  • It checks the shape of each web address, not whether the page loads. Open every link once before you publish.
  • It cannot judge which pages matter most to your business, or write good descriptions for you. The sitemap button builds titles from web addresses, so edit them.
  • It does not put the file on your site. You, or your web team, need to upload it to the root of your domain.

Questions

What is an llms.txt file?

It is a plain text file, written in Markdown, that sits at /llms.txt on your site. It gives a short summary of your site and a list of your most useful pages, each with a short note. The format was first proposed in September 2024 and is described at llmstxt.org. It is a community proposal, not an official web standard. For more, see what llms.txt is.

Will an llms.txt file help me rank or get cited?

There is no good evidence that it does. Google says Google Search ignores llms.txt files, so they neither help nor harm your visibility there, and that it is fine to keep one for other services that use them (Google's guide). An SE Ranking study of nearly 300,000 domains, published in October 2026, found no correlation between having an llms.txt file and how often a domain is cited by AI tools (SE Ranking). The study does not say which AI tools it sampled. As far as we have verified, no major search provider has confirmed that it uses llms.txt to rank or cite pages.

Then why make one?

It takes little time, it does no harm, and it makes you write down a clear summary of your site and your key pages. Some tools and developers may use it. Treat it as a small, low-cost extra. Pages that answer real questions and can be read by crawlers matter more. You can test that with the AI Crawler Checker.

What should I put in it?

Your site name, one clear sentence about what you do and who for, then the pages a newcomer would need most: products or services, pricing, docs, your best guides, about and support. Add one short line to each link. Put pages that can be skipped in a section called Optional. Keep the whole file short.

How is llms.txt different from robots.txt and sitemap.xml?

robots.txt tells crawlers what they may fetch. sitemap.xml lists the pages of your site for search engines. llms.txt is a short, readable guide to your best pages. It does not allow or block anything. See llms.txt vs robots.txt vs sitemap.xml.
