GEO vs LLMO: Is There Any Real Difference?

The short answer

GEO (generative engine optimization) and LLMO (large language model optimization) are two names for almost the same work: making your content easy for AI answer tools to find, trust and cite. Neither has an agreed definition 1, and Google treats the work as ordinary SEO 2. Pick one term, define it in your brief, and spend your effort on the shared checklist.

  • No standards body defines GEO or LLMO, and sources say the terms overlap 1.
  • GEO began in a 2023 research paper and now appears in Bing's guidelines. LLMO shows up mostly in marketing guides.
  • Google says optimizing for generative AI search is still SEO, and it names AEO and GEO but not LLMO 2.
  • Choose the term your buyers or vendors already use, then write its meaning into the brief.

Is there a real difference between GEO and LLMO?

No agreed one. Wikipedia's page on generative engine optimization says the related terms overlap and there is no consensus definition 1. Both labels describe the effort to get a brand named or linked inside answers from tools such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews.

The differences that do exist are about origin and audience, not method. GEO started in academic research and later entered a search engine's rulebook. LLMO appears mainly in marketing guides. The table below puts them side by side.

Disclosure: Chalk Labs sells AI SEO services, so we gain if readers care about this topic. We use whichever term the reader uses, and we think the label matters far less than the work.

Which one fits you?

This is not a test of which acronym is right. It points to the label that will cause the least confusion in your situation.

Use GEO

The term with a research paper and a search engine's guidelines behind it.

Best when
  • Your readers follow Bing or Google guidance
  • You work with engineers or researchers
  • You want a term with a documented origin

Use LLMO

The term common in marketing-tool guides.

Best when
  • Your vendors already say LLMO
  • Your team reads SEO-tool blogs
  • You also care about what models say from training data

Use plain words

Say AI search visibility and skip the acronym.

Best when
  • Your audience is not technical
  • You write contracts or board papers
  • You want wording that outlives the trend

Where did each term come from?

GEO has the clearest paper trail. A research team led by Pranjal Aggarwal introduced it in a paper first posted on 16 November 2023 and accepted to the KDD 2024 conference 4. Bing then named GEO in its webmaster guidelines, in an update reported on 27 February 2026, and tied it to content being eligible to be used and referenced in AI responses 3.

LLMO is newer in print. Semrush's guide, published on 5 January 2026, calls it a marketing tactic that aims to improve a brand's visibility in AI-generated answers, and says most traditional SEO tactics help it too 6. A Forrester analyst lists LLMO next to GEO, AEO and AIO in a November 2025 post, and warns that vendors tend to exaggerate how far these fields differ from SEO 5.

How do GEO and LLMO compare side by side?

On every row that matters for a buying decision, the two terms land in the same place. The few real gaps are about wording and who uses it.

What do both terms ask you to do?

Both ask for the same four jobs, and Google's own guide lists most of them. Treat this list as the real content of either label.

  • Make pages indexable and eligible to show with a snippet. Google says there are no extra requirements to appear in its AI features 2.
  • Publish content that is not a commodity: first-hand experience and unique expertise, not generic summaries 2.
  • Skip the gimmicks. Google says llms.txt files will neither harm nor help visibility in Google Search, because Google ignores them 2.
  • Measure with the reports that exist, starting with the Generative AI performance report in Search Console 2.

Could LLMO mean something different from GEO?

It could, but no source we read says so. One workable split is our own reading, not an industry standard: use GEO for AI tools that search the live web and cite pages, and LLMO for anything a language model says, including answers drawn from its training data.

That split has a practical use. A brand can be mentioned from training data without any page being fetched. Whether a crawler is allowed to collect pages for training, or only for search, is a separate setting, covered in AI training crawlers vs AI search crawlers.

If you adopt the split, write it into your brief. Otherwise two people will use the same word for two different jobs.

Which term should you use?

Use the term your buyers, vendors or board already use, and define it once. If nobody has a preference, use plain words such as AI search visibility. They need no explanation, and they hold up if the jargon changes next year.

For a longer view of the family of terms, see AEO vs GEO and SEO vs AEO vs GEO. The page on LLM optimization covers the LLMO side in more depth.

One-line definition to paste into a brief
  • In this document, GEO and LLMO both mean: making our pages easy for AI tools
  • (ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews) to find, trust and cite,
  • and measuring whether our brand appears in their answers.
  • It is part of SEO, and it does not promise any ranking or citation.

What should you ask a vendor who sells either one?

Ask what they will actually do, not which acronym they use. Google's guidance on third-party services lists AEO and GEO tools among those to think about critically, and notes that third-party tools do not have Google's internal ranking data and cannot guarantee performance 7.

Use the questions below to turn a pitch into a scope you can compare.

  • Which pages will you create or change, and how many?
  • Which AI tools will you measure, and with which prompts?
  • How will you separate mentions from links to my pages?
  • What do you need from my team, and what will you report each month?
  • What happens if nothing changes after three months?

Frequently asked questions

Is LLMO the same as GEO?

In practice, yes. Both describe efforts to be named or cited in AI-generated answers, and no source we read draws a firm line between them. Wikipedia notes there is no consensus definition 1. If you want a split, treat GEO as live AI search and LLMO as everything a model says.

Is GEO the same as AEO?

They overlap heavily. Google's guide says you may see both terms and that the work is still SEO 2. A separate comparison explains where some vendors draw a line: see AEO vs GEO.

Does Google use the terms GEO or LLMO?

Google's guide for generative AI features names AEO and GEO as terms you may see used, and says the work is still SEO. It does not mention LLMO 2. Google also asks readers to be skeptical of tools that promise AEO or GEO results 2.

Do I need llms.txt for GEO or LLMO?

Not for Google. Its guide says an llms.txt file will neither harm nor help visibility in Google Search, because Google ignores it 2. Other AI tools may behave differently, so test rather than assume. See what llms.txt is.

Which term should I put on my website?

Use the words your buyers type. Most owners search for things like AI search visibility or getting recommended by ChatGPT, not for acronyms. Define the acronym once if you use it, then use plain phrases in headings.
