How to Optimize Your Website for Google AI Mode
To optimize for Google AI Mode, make sure your pages are indexed and can show a snippet. Then answer the sub-questions behind each buyer topic on useful, original pages. Google says AI Mode needs no special markup or AI files. Measure it in Search Console, where AI Mode clicks sit inside Web search totals and a separate report shows impressions.
- Google says AI Mode has no extra technical requirements: a page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet.
- AI Mode splits a question into sub-searches. Plan pages around the sub-questions, not only the headline question.
- Skip llms.txt, chunking and special markup for Google. Put your effort into missing answers, visible text and useful images.
- Search Console cannot isolate AI Mode clicks. The Generative AI performance report shows impressions only.
- Test with the same prompts every month, and record the date, because answers vary by person and by day.
What does Google AI Mode need from your website?
It needs what Google Search already needs, and nothing extra. Google says a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet, which is the short text excerpt under a result, to appear as a supporting link in AI Mode 1. Google also says there are no extra technical requirements and no special schema.org markup to add 1.
So the work is mostly content and checking. AI Mode is the Google Search experience where you ask a question, get a written answer and ask follow-ups 5. Your job is to cover the questions it asks on the buyer's behalf, then confirm your pages show up. Meeting every requirement does not guarantee crawling, indexing or serving, and Google says so itself 1.
Expect differences between features. Google notes that AI Mode and AI Overviews may use different models, so the links they show can differ 1.
What do you need, and how long does it take?
You need Search Console access, permission to edit your pages and a list of your most valuable buyer questions. A first pass takes about half a day for five questions. A monthly check takes about 30 minutes. Both times are our estimates, not measured figures.
- Search Console, which is free, with your site already verified.
- A signed-out or private browser window for test prompts, so your own history does less to shape the answers.
- A spreadsheet for the fan-out map and the check log. Copy-ready versions are in the templates below.
How does AI Mode build an answer, and why should that change what you publish?
AI Mode splits one question into subtopics and searches them all at the same time. Google calls this query fan-out and describes it as dividing your question into subtopics and searching for each one at once across several data sources 5. Its documentation says both AI Mode and AI Overviews may use the technique 1. Read what query fan-out is for the basics.
A page that answers only the headline question can miss most of those searches. We found no figure from Google for how many it runs on a normal answer. When it announced Deep Search in May 2025, it said that feature can issue hundreds of searches 13. Treat any list of sub-questions as a model of the system, not a readout of it.
Questions are also getting longer. In February 2026 Google said AI Mode queries are three times longer than traditional searches, and that nearly one in six use voice or images 6. Both are company-reported figures, with no sample or method given.
Reach is large, and the product keeps changing. In July 2026 Google said AI Mode had passed 1 billion monthly active users since its global expansion in October 2025 7. It also said it had recently brought AI Overviews and AI Mode together into one Search experience 7. See AI Overviews vs AI Mode for the differences.
What did an AI assistant search for when we asked this question?
On 20 October 2026 a Claude agent with web search ran three searches for “how to optimize my website for Google AI Mode”: the how-to, the mechanism and the measurement. This page covers all three on purpose.
That was one run on one engine, and Claude is not Google AI Mode. To see the sub-searches for your own prompts, try the Query Fan-Out Explorer.
How do you turn one buyer question into a fan-out map?
List the sub-questions a buyer's question would split into, then check which of your pages answers each one. This is a planning model, not data from Google, so label it that way. The table shows the method for an invented firm called Brightway Office Cleaning. The buyer question is “how much does office cleaning cost for a small office?”
Fill the rows marked Missing first. On those questions you cannot be a supporting link at all. Then fix the Partial and Weak rows. This order puts new answers ahead of polish. For a longer method, see how to do query fan-out research.
| Likely sub-question | Type | Page that answers it | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Typical hourly rate for office cleaning | Price | /pricing | Missing: the price sits behind a quote form |
| What a standard office clean includes | Scope | /services/office-cleaning | Partial: the checklist is a PDF |
| Contract length and notice period | Terms | None | Missing |
| Cleaning company or in-house cleaner for a small office | Comparison | None | Missing |
| Does the firm carry insurance and run background checks | Proof | /about | Partial: one line, no document |
| What a finished clean looks like | Visual | /gallery | Weak: images have no text or alt text |
Which on-page changes help, and which can you skip?
Do the ordinary things well, because Google says standard SEO fundamentals still apply 1. Its AI optimization guide asks for people-first content with real expert insight, not content anyone could have written 2. Google calls that kind of content non-commodity. Everything in the table is a supporting detail.
Skip means skip for Google only. Other assistants have their own rules, and some owners add llms.txt for them. If you want one, read how to create an llms.txt file, and know that Google does not need it.
| Action | Do or skip | What Google says |
|---|---|---|
| Keep key facts in visible text, not only in images | Do | Google lists keeping important content in text form as a best practice 1. |
| Add useful images and video next to the text | Do | Generative AI search features can bring in relevant images and video, so Google suggests supporting text with quality visuals 2. |
| Write real alt text and descriptive file names | Do | Google calls alt text the most important image metadata and says not to fill it with keywords 12. |
| Make structured data match the visible page | Do | Markup should match the visible text, but structured data is not required for generative AI search 12. |
| Keep Business Profile and Merchant Center details current | Do, if relevant | Google lists this as a best practice 1. |
| Link related pages with internal links | Do | Google lists internal links among its key areas 1. |
| Add an llms.txt file for Google's sake | Skip | Google Search ignores these files, so they neither help nor harm there 2. |
| Cut pages into tiny chunks or rewrite them just for AI | Skip | Google says there is no requirement to break content into tiny pieces 2. |
| Chase mentions that are not real | Skip | Google lists inauthentic mentions among the things to ignore 2. |
Can you stop AI Mode using your content, and what would it cost?
Yes. Google's robots meta tag rules reach AI Mode. A robots meta tag is a line in a page's head section that tells Google how to show the page. The nosnippet rule also stops your content being used as a direct input for AI Overviews and AI Mode, and max-snippet limits how much may be used 8.
The cost is visibility. A page must be eligible to show with a snippet to be a supporting link 1, so a page set to nosnippet is unlikely to qualify. Use these rules on purpose, for pages you do not want quoted.
Check for accidents. Some site templates add nosnippet or max-snippet:0 to every page, and nobody notices. The data-nosnippet attribute hides only part of a page, and the Google page we read does not say how it affects AI Mode 8. To limit AI training and grounding in other Google systems, Google points to the Google-Extended token instead 1.
How do you measure AI Mode traffic in Search Console?
Use two reports, and accept that neither isolates AI Mode clicks. The Performance report includes AI Mode in its Web search type, and Google began counting AI Mode there on 16 June 2025 111. A click on an external link in AI Mode counts as a click. A follow-up question counts as a new query 4.
The Generative AI performance report adds impressions. It shows how often links to your site were shown in AI Overviews and AI Mode, by page, country, date and device. It also splits text searches from multimodal searches, such as Google Lens and uploaded images 3. Google says it had rolled the report out to all websites worldwide as of 31 August 2026. It usually does not appear for sites with too few such impressions 3.
Two limits matter. The help page lists impressions as the only metric, with no clicks or position 3. If two of your links appear in the same feature, the chart counts one impression, so chart and table totals can differ 3.
Analytics tools add another limit. Google Analytics 4 files AI Mode inside its Organic Search channel, so you cannot split it from classic Google traffic there 10. Google also warns that no third-party tool has access to its internal ranking or AI systems, so treat claims of exact AI Mode rankings with care 2.
| Question | Where to look | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| Is Google showing my pages in AI Mode? | Generative AI performance report, Pages tab | Impressions only, and it may not appear for small sites 3. |
| Did anyone click through? | Performance report, Web search type | AI Mode clicks are mixed into the Web totals 1. |
| Which queries bring visits? | Performance report, Queries tab | Each AI Mode follow-up counts as a new query 4. |
| Is my brand named in the answer text? | Your own prompt log | Manual, and answers vary by person and day. |
What mistakes waste the most time?
Most wasted effort comes from three habits. Each one is easy to spot and cheap to stop.
- Hunting for a hidden ranking factor. Google says no special optimizations are needed for AI Mode 1. Spend the time on missing answers instead.
- Assuming a top-10 rank is enough. A July 2025 Semrush study, from before Google merged AI Overviews and AI Mode in 2026, of 5,000 keywords found AI Mode's cited sources overlapped Google's top 10 results by about 54% of domains and 35% of URLs 9. It was one desktop study, but it shows that ranking and citation are different things.
- Testing with one prompt. AI Mode can tailor responses to the person asking 9, and personalization depends on account settings 5. Run each prompt more than once and note the date.
How do you know your changes worked?
You know it worked when four signals agree. Your key pages are still indexed and snippet-eligible. Their impressions in the Generative AI performance report rise or hold. Your test prompts show your site as a linked source more often. And Google search clicks to those pages rise in the Performance report, though that cannot be split by AI Mode.
Wait before you judge. We found no published schedule for how fast Google recrawls a changed page, so give each change at least a few weeks. That is our rule of thumb, not Google's. Change one thing per page at a time, and keep a log with dates.
Treat a rise in impressions as evidence of exposure, not of revenue. Tie the pages to real enquiries in your own records. For a method, read how to test whether your changes worked.
When is AI Mode work not worth your time?
Skip it if your key pages are not indexed yet, because nothing else works until they are. Fix indexing first, then come back. Lower its priority if Search Console shows no Generative AI report, which Google says usually means too few such impressions 3. AI Mode is also offered only in certain countries and languages, so check yours 5.
Do not skip the content gaps, though. The pages that fill them also serve classic search, and Google says the same fundamentals apply to both 1.

Frequently asked questions
Is there special markup or a file for Google AI Mode?
Does ranking in the top 10 get me into AI Mode?
Not by itself. One Semrush study of 5,000 keywords in July 2025, before Google merged AI Overviews and AI Mode in 2026, found about 54% domain overlap and 35% URL overlap between AI Mode's cited sources and Google's top 10 9. It was a single desktop study. Good classic rankings help, but they are not the whole story.
Can I see AI Mode clicks on their own in Search Console?
Should I write a page for every sub-question AI Mode might ask?
Only for distinct needs. Google says creating pages for every variation of a query, mainly to manipulate rankings or AI responses, violates its scaled content abuse policy 2. If two sub-questions share one answer, put both on one page. Add a page when the buyer needs something the first page cannot give.
Is AI Mode the same as AI Overviews?
They are related but different. AI Overviews are short summaries inside regular results, while AI Mode is a deeper, separate experience 5. In July 2026 Google said it had recently brought the two together in one Search experience 7. The optimization work is largely the same. See the comparison.
Do people click the links in AI Mode?
Some do, and Search Console counts a click on an external link in AI Mode as a click 4. We found no click-through rate for AI Mode in the Google sources we read, so we do not quote one. Measure your own impressions, clicks and enquiries instead.
