The Impact of AI SEO on Local Businesses
AI answers name only a few local businesses, and they change from one run to the next. In a September 2026 study, ChatGPT listed 4.1 businesses per answer on average and Google AI Overviews 2.5. 1 Google Maps still mentioned tracked businesses far more often. 1 Your Google profile, reviews and website decide whether you are one of the few.
- Google Maps mentioned tracked businesses in 66% of searches, versus 32% to 38% on AI surfaces. 1
- Only 8% of US consumers chose AI as their first channel to find a local business, though 23% used it at some point. 3
- Google Business Profile made up 28.5% of local AI citations, and business websites 42%. 1
- Our own local-shop case is search-led and took 16 months, measured in Google Search, not in AI citations.
How do AI answers affect local businesses?
They shrink the list. A map pack shows several businesses in a row. An AI answer often names two to four, in prose, with no easy way to scroll for more. Being third in a map pack still gets you seen. Being fifth in an AI answer usually means not being mentioned at all.
The good news is that the inputs are familiar. Google's Business Profile guidance says local results depend mainly on relevance, distance and prominence, and prominence reflects how many websites link to you and how many reviews you have. 5 BrightLocal's data suggests AI answers draw on the same profile, website and review evidence. 1
So local AI SEO is mostly local SEO done thoroughly, plus a website that states clearly what you do, where, and for whom.
How many customers use AI to find local businesses?
A growing minority, mostly alongside Google. BrightLocal surveyed 1,227 US consumers who had searched for a local business in the past three months. 52% began their latest search on Google Search, 23% used AI tools at some point, and 8% chose AI as their first channel. 3
Three in four people used more than one channel. 3 BrightLocal's earlier review survey of 1,002 US adults found use of generative AI for local recommendations rose from 6% to 45%. 2 The two surveys use different questions, so do not compare them directly.
For a local owner, the lesson is not to abandon Google. It is that a growing share of your future customers will meet you first in an AI answer.
How is an AI answer different from the local map pack?
It is shorter and less stable. BrightLocal ran 200,085 local searches across ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and AI Overviews. ChatGPT named 4.1 businesses per answer, AI Mode 3.5 and AI Overviews 2.5, and about 10% to 11% of answers named none. 1
Google Maps mentioned a tracked business in 66% of searches against 32% to 38% for the AI surfaces. 1 A business that appeared once reappeared in about half of repeat attempts on ChatGPT and AI Mode. 1 BrightLocal sells the tracker used for the data, and its methods are only partly described.
Yext compared four AI engines on 491,972 local cases. They named the same top business in only 4% of cases and four different businesses in 48%. 6 The practical point is that one test tells you little. Run each prompt several times and across assistants.
| Question | Google map pack | AI answer |
|---|---|---|
| How many businesses show? | A list you can scroll | About 2 to 4, in prose |
| How stable is it? | Very stable across attempts | Changes on repeat runs |
| What is the main source? | Your Business Profile and reviews | Profile, your website and directories |
| How do you check it? | Search from the right place | Run each prompt several times, in each assistant |
Where do AI answers get their local information?
Mostly from places you control. In BrightLocal's data, Google Business Profile made up 28.5% of all citations, and business websites were 42% of citations and 93% of unique source domains. 1 About 53% to 59% of recommended businesses were within 5 km of the search point. 1
Yext found that profiles with location pages, a cover photo, a description and schema markup were more likely to be named by the engines, with a 2.9 times lift for location pages and 2.1 times for schema markup. 6 Yext says these are associations, not proof, and it sells listings software.
Put together, the message is plain. Claim and complete your profile, keep your name, address and phone number the same everywhere, and give each service and each area its own useful page.
Do reviews still matter in AI answers?
Yes, but they are not the whole story. BrightLocal reports 97% of consumers read reviews for local businesses, and 74% look for reviews written in the last three months. 2 When researching, 38% cited star rating and 37% number of reviews as top factors, behind address or proximity at 44%. 4
Yext found the highest-rated business in a list came first only 40% of the time. 6 Ratings help you qualify. They do not decide the order alone.
Ask for reviews honestly. The US Federal Trade Commission's rule on reviews took effect on 21 October 2024 and bars fake reviews, and buying reviews that must be positive or negative. 7 Google also bars merchants from offering payment or discounts for reviews, and from selectively soliciting only positive ones. 8
Does your website matter more than before?
It matters at two moments: when an AI cites it, and when a person checks it. BrightLocal found 18% of consumers chose not to contact a business because they could not find a website, and 20% named a professional-looking website among their top three reasons to choose, a lower-ranked reason, ninth in the list. 4
Because business websites supply a large share of AI citations, 1 vague pages cost you twice. Say what you do, your prices or price ranges, where you work, your opening hours and who runs the business. Put the answer in the first two sentences of each page.
Our own local proof fits this. Meru Trophy, a trophy shop in Bengaluru, started with near-zero search visibility. A programme built around the high-intent searches buyers type before ordering reached 27,300 Google clicks, 2.3M impressions and an average position of 6.9 in 16 months. That is Google Search data, not a count of AI citations, and it was slow.
What is a realistic way to value this?
Count the actions that turn into sales: calls, direction requests and form fills. Then apply your own close rate. Local jobs often have lower deal values than B2B work, so the cost side must stay small.
The numbers below are invented. They show how a few extra enquiries a month can matter for a shop or service business, and how fast a high monthly cost would wipe that out.
- Extra monthly website visits from search and AI: 500
- Visits that become a call, form or direction request: 10% -> 50 enquiries
- Enquiries that become sales: 40% -> 20 sales
- Average sale: $120 -> $2,400
- Monthly cost (your time, tools, any help): $600
- Net per month: about $1,800
What should a local business do this month?
Do the basics in order. Complete your Google Business Profile, with the right primary category, services, photos and hours. Check that your name, address and phone match on your site and key directories. Set up a simple, honest process to ask every customer for a review, not only the happy ones.
Then test yourself. Run ten prompts, three times each, and write down who appears. Our guide to optimising a local business for AI search gives the full checklist, and the comparison with local SEO explains where the two overlap.

What are the limits of this evidence?
All the large local datasets here are US-led and come from companies that sell local tools. The BrightLocal studies do not state every country covered, and the consumer surveys are US only. Results in other countries may differ.
AI answers also change often. A snapshot from this month may not hold next quarter. Treat any figure here as a reason to test your own market, not as a promise that your business will appear.
Frequently asked questions
Will AI answers replace the Google map pack?
Not on current data. BrightLocal found Google Maps mentioned tracked businesses in 66% of searches, against 32% to 38% on AI surfaces, and 52% of consumers still began local searches on Google. Expect both to matter, and plan for customers who use several channels.
How do I get my local business mentioned by ChatGPT?
Make the evidence easy to find. Complete your Google Business Profile, keep your details consistent across directories, collect genuine recent reviews, and publish clear pages on each service and area you cover. Nobody can promise a mention, because answers change between runs.
Is it okay to pay or reward customers for reviews?
Not on Google. Its policy bars merchants from offering payment, discounts or free goods for reviews, and from asking only happy customers. The US FTC rule allows incentives only if they are not tied to the sentiment of the review. Ask every customer politely, at the right time, and accept the mix of ratings.
How long does local AI SEO take?
Expect months. Our Meru Trophy case reached 27,300 Google clicks over 16 months, and that was a search-led programme in one city. Early signals, such as better profile views and calls, may come sooner, but timing depends on competition and how weak your starting point is.
