How AI Search Changes How Buyers Talk to Sales
AI search changes what buyers know before the first sales call, not whether they talk to sales. Many B2B buyers now use AI to compare vendors, and most arrive with a shortlist already set. Yet 69% still prefer to check AI-generated insights with a rep. Expect better-informed prospects, some wrong or dated claims to correct, and a rep role built around validation. 15
- Buyers use AI to build a shortlist before they contact you, so your first call often starts in the middle of a comparison.
- Gartner found 69% of B2B buyers prefer to check AI-generated insights with a sales rep, so reps matter more as validators.
- Surveys disagree on whether buyers now contact sales earlier or later, so measure your own deals before you assume.
- Plan for new objections: AI-made comparisons can be dated or wrong, and reps then spend call time on corrections.
- AI SEO can fix the facts AI quotes about you, but it cannot control comparison answers built from other sites.
What actually changes when buyers use AI before they call sales?
Buyers arrive better informed and with a shortlist, and the rep's job shifts from supplying information to confirming it. Gartner surveyed 645 B2B buyers in August and September 2025 and published the results in May 2026. Of those buyers, 45% said they used generative AI (GenAI, tools such as ChatGPT that write answers) during a recent purchase, mainly to gather information on vendors and products. 1
Buyers used an average of seven information sources. Gartner says reps stay the most important source at four moments: researching a business problem or need, choosing a preferred supplier, securing internal support and finalising the purchase. The release frames the rep's role as validation, since 69% prefer to check AI insights with a rep. 1
Is the shortlist really set before the first call?
For most deals, yes. In 6sense's 2025 survey of nearly 4,000 buyers, 95% chose a vendor that was already on their Day One shortlist, and 94% of buying groups ranked that shortlist before they engaged sellers. 5 6sense sells intent-data software and the answers are self-reported, so treat the exact figures as a guide.
AI chatbots seem to feed that shortlist. In G2's March 2026 survey of 1,076 software buyers, 69% said an AI chatbot led them to select a different vendor than they first planned, and 33% bought from a vendor they had never heard of. 3 Another 85% said they think more highly of a vendor that an AI answer cites. 3
G2 also asked what the first AI prompt looks like. It found 33% were category-based, 31% competitor-based, 22% requirements-based, 9% ecosystem-based and 6% budget-based. 3 So 64% of first prompts name a category or a rival, and that is where your name needs to appear. G2 sells software review products and surveyed software buyers, so the pattern may differ in your field.
Do buyers contact sales earlier or later now?
The sources disagree, so do not assume either. 6sense asked buyers and found first contact moved earlier, from 69% to 61% of the buying journey, which it puts at roughly six to seven weeks sooner. 5 HubSpot asked marketers instead, and nearly 70% said leads reach them later in the buying process because buyers did more AI-assisted research. 7
Sources disagree because they ask different people in different markets. HubSpot's figure is marketers' impressions, and its page gives no survey dates. 7
| Source | Who was asked | Direction | Main caveat |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6sense, 2025 | Nearly 4,000 buyers | Earlier, by about 6 to 7 weeks | Vendor-run, self-reported, explains a small part of the shift |
| HubSpot, 2026 | Marketers (3,400+ in the report) | Later, per nearly 70% of marketers | Marketers' impressions, no survey dates given |
Do buyers still want to talk to a salesperson?
Yes, but fewer want one for basic information. Gartner's March 2026 release says 67% of B2B buyers prefer a rep-free experience. 2 Its May 2026 release cites the same August to September 2025 survey and says 69% prefer to validate AI-generated insights with sales reps. 1 Gartner gives the sample as 646 buyers in one release and 645 in the other. Buyers seem to want to do the research alone, then check it with a person.
Buyers distrust both sides. Gartner found 51% say they are more likely to meet misleading information from GenAI, and 49% say the same of a sales rep. 1 In Forrester's 2025 data, 19% of buyers using AI applications felt less confident in their purchase, which Forrester links to inaccurate or unreliable genAI information. 6
AI is also a rival for the final conversation. Forrester reports that 30% of buyers saw genAI tools as a meaningful interaction at the final commit stage, against 17% for product experts. 6 Forrester predicts that buyers will turn to experts to validate genAI insights, and earlier in the process. That is a forecast, not a measurement.
What new objections should a sales team expect?
Expect objections that start with “AI told me”, and treat each as a claim to check, not a fight to win. G2's 2026 Buyer Behavior Report, drawing on interviews with 55 B2B marketers and go-to-market leaders, says some prospects arrive with AI-derived comparisons that are category-level, dated or inaccurate, and that vendors are now offering pricing logic, ROI calculators, case studies and trials earlier. 4
The table below turns that into five scenarios. They are our illustrations of likely patterns, not observed data.
| What the buyer says | What may sit behind it | First move |
|---|---|---|
| “ChatGPT says you don't integrate with our CRM.” | An old or third-party page was quoted. | Ask which answer they saw, then send your current integrations page. |
| “Another vendor looks cheaper in the comparison.” | The AI compared list prices or retired plans. | Walk through total cost for their case and share the pricing logic. |
| “AI listed three vendors and you were third.” | The order may reflect what the AI found, not a ranking of quality. | Ask what criteria they gave the AI, then map your strengths to them. |
| “I just need a quick confirmation.” | The research is done and the buyer wants validation. | Confirm the facts in writing, then offer a short call for the open question. |
| “AI says a rival is better for firms like ours.” | A generic category answer, not an answer for their case. | Ask for their specifics and offer a reference in a similar situation. |
What does correcting an AI claim look like on a call?
Ask what they saw, check it against your current page, correct it with a link, then return to the buyer's real question. Log every claim so marketing can fix its source. The call below is invented to show the pattern.
- Invented for illustration.
- Buyer: I asked an AI assistant to compare you with two rivals. It said you charge per seat and have no API.
- Rep: Thanks for telling me. Which two rivals, and what did you ask it to compare?
- Buyer: Price, integrations and setup time.
- Rep: Let me check each against our current pages. We moved to usage pricing, so the per-seat claim is out of date. I'm sending the API page now.
- Rep: Which of those three matters most to your decision?
- CRM note: AI claim, per-seat pricing (out of date). Source page unknown. Asked buyer to forward the answer.
What should sales enablement build first?
Build a one-page claim sheet that lists what major AI assistants say about you and which statements are wrong. Gartner advises enablement leaders to break content into modular building blocks, because sellers cannot rely on static collateral when buyers research alone. 2
Gartner also links buyer confidence to deal quality: confident buyers are twice as likely to report a high-quality deal as buyers with low decision confidence. 2 The aim of the sheet is therefore not to win arguments. It is to raise the buyer's confidence in true facts.
- An AI claim sheet: the ten questions buyers ask, what each assistant answers today, and a correct, linkable answer.
- A pricing explainer that shows the logic, not only the numbers, because G2 says vendors now offer pricing logic earlier. 4
- A fair comparison page for each main rival, which gives reps something to send and gives AI something accurate to quote.
- One discovery question: “What did you ask an AI before this call, and what did it say?”
- A CRM field called “AI claim to correct”, so objections become data.
Where does AI SEO fit into a sales problem?
In Ahrefs' separate test of 20,000 US prompts, official websites made up 63.4% of citations for fact questions such as pricing, features and company details, and 46.4% for comparison questions. 8 The article does not name the model tested.
That is why sales should feed marketing. Objections logged by reps show which questions AI answers badly. How do you know sales is adapting well?
Measure deals, not impressions. 6sense recommends judging success by shortlist placement and win rate rather than raw lead counts, and that fits this problem. 5 Track these four for a quarter:
- Deals where the buyer names an AI assistant when asked how they found you. This is self-reported, so it undercounts.
- Calls with an AI claim logged for correction, per month.
- Win rate on deals where you were on the buyer's first shortlist, against deals where you were added later.
- Days from first contact to first proposal.
What is still unknown?
Most of this evidence is self-reported, vendor-run and about software buyers. G2 sells review products and 6sense sells intent data. 35 G2's report gives no data on how sales conversations changed, and calls its sales guidance advice. 3
Chalk Labs has not run a sales-enablement study. Our own published cases measure Google search results, not sales calls. We do not guarantee any change in close rate or sales cycle, and you should test the effect on your own pipeline. Frequently asked questions
Do B2B buyers use ChatGPT before talking to sales?
Many do, and the share depends on how it is measured. 6sense reports 94% of buyers use LLMs at some point, most often to compare vendor offerings. 5
Will AI replace sales reps?
These sources do not show it. Gartner found 69% of buyers prefer to validate AI-generated insights with a rep. 1 6sense found buyers averaged 16 interactions with the winning vendor, one fewer than a year earlier, and concluded LLMs have not replaced vendor interaction. 5 Forrester forecasts that some sellers will face AI buyer agents. 6
How should a rep handle a prospect who quotes a wrong AI answer?
Ask which question and tool produced it, check it against your current page, and correct it with a link instead of arguing. Then return to what the buyer needs to decide. Log the claim in your CRM so marketing can fix the page the AI used.
Does AI search shorten the sales cycle?
We found no reliable measure. Survey answers on speed are self-reported, and Forrester's longer timelines concern buying AI-powered products, not researching with AI. 9 See our page on sales cycle length.
What should I ask on a first call?
Ask what the buyer asked an AI, which vendors it named, and what it said about you. Then check each claim against your current pages. The answers show what buyers believe before you speak, and they give marketing a list of pages to fix.
