AI SEO for Architecture and Interior Design: How to Get Recommended by ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews

The short answer

An architecture or interior design studio gets recommended when AI tools can read, in plain text, what it designed, where, for whom, at what scale and with what result. Images alone do not carry that. Publish project pages with written facts, show licences, qualify every sustainability claim, and earn honest reviews. Local details beat generic portfolio pages.

  • AI tools read text, so every portfolio image needs a written project brief beside it: place, scope, size, goal and outcome.
  • All states and DC require architects to be licensed, so show licence details 4.
  • Sustainability claims need qualifying: Phius publishes performance figures on its own pages without methodology we could see 6.
  • The IRS page we read says the 25C credit applies to property placed in service before 31 December 2025, so it does not cover later work 5.
  • Fake or pressured reviews are banned by the FTC rule 7.
Why it matters in Architecture and Interior Design
  • AI use is broad: 34% of US adults had used ChatGPT by early 2025 2.
  • Visual work is invisible to AI tools unless it is described in text 1.
  • Clients start with learning questions, which rewards guides that teach.
  • Green and incentive claims are easy to get wrong and easy for AI to repeat 56.

What could briefing calls be worth to a design studio?

Enter your own numbers to see how visits to your project and guide pages turn into briefing calls, signed projects and design fees each month.

What this adds up to

About 2 customers a month and $36,000 in revenue. After a monthly cost of $1,500, that leaves $34,500.

How it is worked out

  • Enquiries = visits × enquiry rate.
  • Customers = enquiries × close rate.
  • Revenue = customers × average customer value.
  • Revenue minus cost = revenue − monthly cost.
  • Return multiple = revenue ÷ monthly cost.
  • Visits to break even = monthly cost ÷ revenue per visit. Revenue per visit = enquiry rate × close rate × customer value.

How do homeowners use AI to find an architect?

We found no public study of how homeowners use AI to pick an architect or designer, so we cannot give a measured share. The closest general figure is Pew's early-2025 US survey, where 34% of adults had ever used ChatGPT 2.

Renovation clients usually start by learning. They ask what a sustainable renovation involves, whether an architect is needed, and what it costs. Only then do they ask for names. The seed prompt, 'best architect for a sustainable home renovation', sits at the end of that path.

That favours studios that teach. A clear guide to how a renovation project runs, from brief to permit to build, earns citations that a gallery page never will.

How do you make visual work readable to AI tools?

Give each project a page with a short factual brief next to the images. Google asks that important content be available in text, and an image-only gallery gives an AI little to quote 1.

Use a fixed template so every project page answers the same questions. State the location, building type and year, the floor area, the budget range if the client agrees, the goals, the main design moves and the outcome. Add your role and the team. Describe images in alt text with what is shown, not keywords.

Mark up the studio as a local business with name and address, using the most specific type available 10. Google does not require this for AI features 1, but it helps machines match your details.

Interior designers can use the same template with room, style, scope and budget band. State any credential you hold, such as NCIDQ certification, and what your state lets you call yourself.

Project page template
  • H1: [Project type] in [Neighbourhood, City]: [one-line result]
  • Answer block: client need, what we designed, and the result in 50 words.
  • Facts: year, size, scope, approximate budget band, our role, collaborators.
  • The brief: three sentences on what the client asked for.
  • The design moves: four bullets, each with a reason.
  • The outcome: what changed, with a measurement only if you have one.
  • Images: each with alt text that states what it shows.
  • Byline: architect name, licence state, date.

What do AI engines look at to trust a design studio?

They look for named people, checkable licences and independent mentions. NCARB says US architects become licensed through education, experience and examination, and that each state has different rules 3. The Bureau of Labor Statistics says all states and DC require architects to be licensed, and that about 14% of architects are self-employed 4.

Show the principal's name, licence state and number on the about page and on project pages. Interior design rules differ. The BLS page we read gave no detail on interior designers, and we did not verify licensing rules for them, so state what applies to you.

Google asks who made a page, how and why, and treats fabricated creator profiles as deception 9. Real bylines and bios matter, and the author page guide shows how to build them.

How should you write about sustainable design without overclaiming?

Name the standard, say what it measures and qualify every number. Phius describes passive building as four controls: thermal, air, radiation and moisture. It certifies projects, products and professionals, including CORE and ZERO for new buildings and REVIVE for retrofits 6. That is useful context for a renovation page.

Be careful with headline figures. Phius's own page says passive buildings can cost 'only 3-5% more' than conventional building and perform 'up to 85% better'. We saw no methodology for those figures on that page 6. If you repeat them, say they come from the certifier, link the source and add your own project data. Never present them as your results.

Incentives change, and AI tools repeat old ones. The IRS energy-efficient home improvement credit page, reviewed on 28 April 2026, says the credit applies to property placed in service before 31 December 2025, so it is not available for work placed in service after that date. Check the IRS page for any change 5. Date every incentive statement and link the official page.

What rules apply to reviews and local listings for design firms?

Reviews follow the FTC's rule. A general request to all clients is exempt. Incentives must not require a positive or negative review. False accusations, intimidation and unfounded legal threats to remove reviews are prohibited 7. Ask every client the same way after handover.

For Google, use the real name customers see, without taglines or keywords. Virtual offices are not eligible unless staffed during business hours, and a studio that visits clients can use a service area and hide the address 8. Co-working spaces qualify only with signage and staff present 8.

Keep the title 'architect' for licensed people, and check how your state treats the word in ads. We did not verify state advertising rules for this page.

How do you measure results for a design studio?

Measure briefing calls and signed projects. Track whether the studio appears for ten fixed prompts, whether visits arrive from AI tools, and what the enquiry form says about how people heard of you.

Design projects close slowly and each is large, so a few enquiries can change the year. Use the AI Prompt List Builder to set the prompts and the ROI Calculator to model value with your own numbers. We do not guarantee any result, because search engines and AI models are third parties.

What have we done in architecture and design, and what have we not?

We have no published results for architects or interior designers. The method carries over: query research, answer pages, technical readiness and measurement. We have used it on a local trophy shop in Bengaluru (Meru Trophy) and on a personal brand (shilikajain.com).

A shop and a design studio are different businesses, so treat that as a method, not a promise.

Your first 90 days

Days 1-30

  • Write ten prompts on renovation process, cost, sustainability and architect choice, and run each three times on two AI engines.
  • List every project page and note which have no written brief.
  • Fix the Google profile: real name, staffed studio or hidden service area 8.
  • Add 'How did you hear about us?' to the enquiry form.

Days 31-60

  • Rewrite your four best projects with the project page template.
  • Publish a 'how a renovation project runs' guide with stages and typical durations from your own work.
  • Ask recent clients for reviews in the same way.

Days 61-90

  • Publish a sustainable renovation guide that names standards and dates every incentive.
  • Publish an architect and designer bios page with licence details.
  • Re-run the ten prompts and record which pages were cited.

The first pages to publish

  1. Sustainable home renovation: how it works. Matches the seed prompt and teaches the buyer.
  2. Do you need an architect for a renovation?. Answers a common early question.
  3. What affects the cost of a renovation design. Explains factors without inventing prices.
  4. Project pages with written briefs. Makes visual work readable to AI tools.
  5. Meet the architects and our licences. Gives named, checkable proof.
  6. Energy incentives for renovations: status as of [date]. A dated page that avoids repeating dead credits.
  7. Renovation permit process in [City]. Adds local detail that generic pages lack.
  8. Our design process step by step. Shows how you work and sets expectations.

  • Certifications named precisely, such as Phius credentials, with links 6.
  • Dated incentive and code statements with official links 5.
  • Reviews on sites you do not control 7.

What can go wrong

  • Image-only portfolios that AI tools cannot read 1.
  • Unqualified performance or cost claims copied from certifiers 6.
  • Repeating an expired tax incentive 5.
  • Using a protected title for unlicensed staff 4.
  • Fake or pressured reviews 7.

Frequently asked questions

Can an architecture firm get recommended by ChatGPT?

Yes, if its pages describe projects in text, show licences and are mentioned by other sites. No one can promise a recommendation. Google says no special markup is needed for its AI features 1, so start with readable project pages and honest reviews.

Do portfolio images help AI visibility?

Only with words around them. Google asks that important content be available in text form 1. Put the brief, scope, size and outcome beside each image, and write alt text that says what the image shows.

Should a studio mention tax credits on its site?

Only with a date and an official link. The IRS page says the energy-efficient home improvement credit applies to property placed in service before 31 December 2025, so it is not available for later work 5. Check the IRS page for any change before you publish.

Who may call themselves an architect?

Licensed people. The BLS says all states and DC require architects to be licensed 4, and NCARB says licensing rules differ by state 3. Check your state board before you use the title in marketing, and show licence details.

How long does AI SEO take for a design studio?

We hold no published timeline for design studios. Our own cases are search-led and measured in months. Track briefing calls and the 'how did you hear about us' field monthly.
