AI SEO for Gaming and Esports

The short answer

Gaming and esports brands get recommended by ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews when they publish first-hand tests, keep patch and price pages current, and show up where players talk. In Ahrefs data for Google AI Overviews, YouTube and Reddit were the top two cited domains. 3 Pair tested reviews on your own site with video and honest community presence.

  • YouTube had 22.9% and Reddit 18.5% of citations among the 50 most-cited domains in Google AI Overviews, in Ahrefs' September 2026 US data. 3
  • Reddit URLs were retrieved often but cited only 1.93% of the time in a ChatGPT study. 4
  • Google's review guidance asks for first-hand evidence, measurements and honest drawbacks. 6
  • Sponsored posts and free hardware must be disclosed clearly, inside the video itself. 8
  • We have no published gaming results. What transfers is the method, proven on local commerce and a personal brand. 10

How do gamers and esports fans use AI to decide what to buy or play?

The audience is large and online. The Entertainment Software Association says 212.3 million Americans play video games every week. 1 We found no reliable study on how many of them ask ChatGPT or Google AI Overviews for product or game advice, so that part is an open question.

What we can measure is where AI answers come from. Ahrefs analysed over 3 million US queries in September 2026 and found YouTube had 22.9% of citations among the 50 most-cited domains in Google AI Overviews, Reddit 18.5% and Facebook 10.1%. 3 None of IGN, Steam or Fandom appeared in the top 50. 3

That does not mean gaming sites are ignored in every answer. It means that, across all topics, video and forums carry a lot of weight, so a gaming brand cannot rely on its own site alone.

Why it matters in Gaming and esports
  • The audience is huge: 212.3 million Americans play weekly. 1
  • YouTube had 22.9% and Reddit 18.5% of citations among the 50 most-cited domains in Google AI Overviews, in Ahrefs' September 2026 US data. 3
  • Buying decisions need first-hand tests and fresh numbers. 6
  • Platform citation shares move fast, so one-channel plans are fragile. 5

What buyers in Gaming and esports ask AI

Pick a question to see what the buyer wants and what to publish so an AI can cite you.

  • What they want
Shortlist a laptop for competitive play on a budget
    What to publish
A tested buying guide with frame-rate tables, display refresh rates, thermals, prices with dates and links to several sellers

What could search and AI visits be worth to your gaming store or brand?

Enter your own numbers to see how visits become product-page enquiries, orders and revenue each month, and what is left after your time and tool costs.

People who arrive from Google, ChatGPT, Perplexity and similar.
Form fills, calls and emails, as a share of visits.

What this adds up to

About 60 customers a month and $66,000 in revenue. After a monthly cost of $1,500, that leaves $64,500.

How it is worked out

  • Enquiries = visits × enquiry rate.
  • Customers = enquiries × close rate.
  • Revenue = customers × average customer value.
  • Revenue minus cost = revenue − monthly cost.
  • Return multiple = revenue ÷ monthly cost.
  • Visits to break even = monthly cost ÷ revenue per visit. Revenue per visit = enquiry rate × close rate × customer value.

Do Reddit and YouTube decide who gets recommended?

They matter, but retrieval is not citation. In an Ahrefs study of 1.4 million ChatGPT prompts, Reddit URLs were cited 1.93% of the times they were retrieved, YouTube 0.51%, and general search results 88.46%. 4 Reddit made up 67.8% of the retrieved-but-uncited URLs. 4

Platform mixes also shift fast. Semrush found ChatGPT's citation of Reddit fell from close to 60% of tracked responses in early August 2025 to about 10% by mid-September. 5 Do not build a plan on one platform's share this month.

The safer view is to cover four layers: your own tested pages, video on your channel and watch pages, honest participation in communities, and review units sent to trusted testers with an accurate fact sheet. Our guide on getting mentioned on Reddit without getting banned covers the rules.

What makes a gaming review or buying guide citable?

First-hand testing, in numbers. Google's review guidance asks you to show expertise, back claims with your own visuals or data, report quantitative measurements, compare alternatives and cover drawbacks. 6 It adds that if you call something the best, you should explain why with first-hand evidence. 6

For a laptop prompt with a price cap, that means a table of frame rates at stated settings, temperatures, display refresh rate and weight, plus the exact configuration tested and the date. Say what you did not test.

Link to more than one seller. Google suggests it, and it tells readers you are not tied to one store. 6 If you earn affiliate income, say so plainly.

A test table that an assistant can quote (replace with your own data)
  • Model: [name], configuration [CPU / GPU / RAM], price on [date]: $[price]
  • Game and settings: [game], [resolution], [preset], driver [version]
  • Average frame rate: [number] fps; 1% low: [number] fps
  • Peak GPU temperature after 30 minutes: [number] degrees C
  • Weight and battery: [kg], [hours] in [test]
  • Not tested: [list what you did not check]

How do you keep patch, meta and price pages fresh?

Games change every few weeks, so a stale guide is a wrong guide. Put a visible 'last updated' date and the game version on each guide. Google advises showing dates plainly and keeping the structured-data dates consistent with the visible ones. 9

Dates must reflect real changes. Google's guidance says dates should describe when the page was published or updated, not other events. 9 After a patch, update the numbers and add a one-line change note.

In the ChatGPT study, cited search pages were often old, with a median age of about 500 days. 4 The authors caution that the uncited pool was much smaller, so do not read this as 'old is better'. Accuracy beats novelty.

How should a gaming brand publish video for search and AI?

Give every important video a watch page on your own site. Google says the page's main purpose should be to show one video, with a unique title and description. 7 A blog post with an embed generally does not count. 7

Use VideoObject markup that matches the real video, and use Clip data or timestamps for key moments such as 'frame rate test'. 7 Add a short text summary with the numbers, so an assistant can quote them without the video.

Our guide on optimising YouTube for AI Overviews has the steps.

What must creators and teams disclose?

Disclose any financial or material tie, using the FTC's plain-words rules for video and live streams. 8 Gaming cases to cover: review-unit loans, tournament and team sponsorship, key giveaways and drops, and stream overlays.

Esports organisations that sell sponsorship should brief every creator they work with, and keep a record of what was agreed.

We do not give legal advice. Rules differ by country, and we have not summarised other jurisdictions here.

How do you measure it?

Save six buyer prompts, such as the laptop question and a game-specific build question. Run each three times on two AI engines each month, and record whether you are named, where and with what claim. Google includes AI feature clicks in the Web search type in Search Console. 2

Add a 'Where did you hear about us?' choice to checkout or sign-up, with AI assistant and YouTube options. Track patch-week traffic apart from steady traffic. We do not guarantee citations or sales.

What have Chalk Labs and Rahil Jain done in gaming?

We have not published results for gaming or esports brands. Do not read this guide as proof of results.

What transfers is the method: query research, answer pages, technical readiness and measurement. It was proven on a local trophy shop in Bengaluru, which reached 27,300 Google clicks in 16 months, and on a new personal site that Chalk Labs reports ranked first for one narrow phrase within a month. 10 Both are Chalk Labs' own work, and the second is self-reported. Gaming runs on community and video, so expect to adapt it.

Your first 90 days

Days 1-30

  • Run six buyer prompts on two AI engines, three runs each, and save the log.
  • List your products, games or teams and fix spec and price mismatches across sites.
  • Set a test method and a patch-update routine.

Days 31-60

  • Publish two tested buying guides with data tables and dated change notes.
  • Move your best three videos to watch pages with text summaries.
  • Add a disclosure policy page and use it in every sponsored video.

Days 61-90

  • Publish a patch guide and a comparison page for your top products.
  • Answer ten real questions in communities you already belong to, without links unless allowed.
  • Rerun the prompt log, compare with day one and plan the next quarter.

The first pages to publish

  1. Best gaming laptops under $1500 for esports. Answers the seed prompt with tested numbers.
  2. How we test. Shows method, which Google's review guidance values.
  3. Spec and price tables with dates. Facts assistants can quote and check.
  4. Patch notes and meta guides with change notes. Keeps fast-moving content accurate.
  5. Video watch pages for benchmarks. Google wants one video per watch page.
  6. Gaming laptop vs desktop for competitive play. A fair comparison for a common decision.
  7. Sponsorship and disclosure policy. Builds trust and meets FTC expectations.
  8. Team and player pages for esports orgs. Entity facts: roster, results, dates.

Trust signals and risks

What AI looks for

  • Measured tests with settings, versions and dates. 6
  • Clear disclosure of sponsorship and free hardware. 8
  • Video watch pages with matching text. 7
  • Visible update dates and change notes. 9
  • Real community presence under your own name.

What can go wrong

  • Hidden sponsorships in video or streams. 8
  • Copied spec sheets with no testing. 6
  • Stale patch or price pages that mislead.
  • Astroturfing in forums, which communities ban and readers resent.
  • Relying on one platform's citation share. 5

Frequently asked questions

Should a gaming brand focus on YouTube or its own site?

Both. YouTube and Reddit led citations in Google AI Overviews in one dataset. 3 But general search pages were cited far more often than Reddit or YouTube in a ChatGPT study. 4 Publish tested pages on your site and match them with video on watch pages.

Does Reddit marketing help AI visibility?

It can, but results are uneven. Reddit URLs were cited only 1.93% of the times ChatGPT retrieved them. 4 Join as a real participant, follow each community's rules, disclose your affiliation, and never post fake reviews. Hidden promotion can get you banned.

How often should patch guides be updated?

After every change that affects the advice. Show the game version and update date on the page. Google asks that dates reflect real publication or updates and that visible and markup dates match. 9 Keep a short change log so readers see what moved.

Do I have to disclose free review hardware?

Yes, in clear words. The FTC counts free products as a material connection and says disclosure should be hard to miss, and in the video itself for video content. 8 Use 'ad', 'sponsored' or a plain sentence, and not vague tags.

How long before we see results?

Nobody can say for your brand, and we do not guarantee citations or sales. Our own cases are search-led and measured in months. Compare patch cycles and quarters, and use the monthly prompt log to see change over time.
