AI SEO for Logistics and Freight
A freight forwarder gets recommended by ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews when AI can find clear pages on lanes, cargo types, licences, customs steps and how to request a quote. Google says no special extras are needed beyond being indexed and snippet-eligible 1. Nobody can promise a placement, so publish pages a shipper could check.
- Google says pages need only be indexed and snippet-eligible. No special markup or AI file is required. 1
- For comparison questions such as 'best forwarder', ChatGPT sent 46.4% of citations to official sites, so outside mentions matter too. 3
- Licence facts are checkable and AI can repeat them: US forwarders and NVOCCs need an FMC licence and a bond. 58
- No study of freight buyers using AI exists that we could find. Treat all numbers here as cross-industry.
- Chalk Labs has not published freight results yet. The method transfers; the proof in this field does not exist yet.
How does a freight forwarder get recommended by ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews?
A forwarder gets recommended when AI can find specific, checkable pages that answer a shipper's question and name the company as a fit. Here 'AI' means ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews (AI-written summaries above some results) and Google AI Mode (its chat-style search).
Google says a page only needs to be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet to appear as a supporting link, and that no additional requirements or special optimisations exist 1. So the work is ordinary: say which lanes you run, what cargo you handle, which licences you hold and how a shipper gets a quote.
Freight has one advantage over most fields. Many of its facts are public and checkable, such as licences, bonds and filing deadlines. A page that states them correctly gives an AI engine something safe to repeat.
- In a cross-industry B2B study, 95% of winning vendors came from the buyer's Day One shortlist. 2
- Licence, bond and customs facts are public, so a precise page is easy for AI to trust and repeat. 5
- For 'best forwarder' prompts, more citations go to outside sites, so directories and trade lists matter. 3
- One won account can repeat every month, so the value of one extra quote request is high.
- Lane pages on many forwarder sites are thin, so a detailed one can stand out (check your top three rivals).
How do shippers use AI to choose a freight forwarder?
Evidence on freight buyers specifically is thin. We found no study that measures how importers use AI to pick a forwarder, so the figures below come from other fields and should be read that way.
In 6sense's 2025 report on nearly 4,000 B2B buyers, 94% used LLMs (large language models, the engines behind chatbots), and the top use was comparing vendor offerings. The same report says buyers picked a vendor from their Day One shortlist 95% of the time 2. The report is vendor-run and self-reported. The lesson is to be on the list before the first quote request.
Clicks from AI are still small. Semrush measured 0.48% of sessions to US manufacturing sites coming from AI tools, with direct and organic search near 80% 10. That is manufacturing, not freight, so it is a guide to scale and not a freight benchmark.
What do AI engines look at when a forwarder is involved?
They look for pages that answer the small questions inside a big one. Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode may run several related searches across subtopics, a method it calls query fan-out 1. Ahrefs found that only 14.4% of free, logged-out ChatGPT responses contained fan-out searches, and those averaged about 1.6 3.
The second finding cuts both ways. Many answers come from the model's memory, where a clear, repeated brand name helps. The answers that do search favour official pages for facts and outside pages for comparisons. The table below is a modelled example, not observed data.
| Sub-question a shipper may ask | Page that answers it | Facts to show |
|---|---|---|
| Which forwarders move machinery from India to the US? | Lane page: India to US, machinery | Origin ports, US ports, modes, cargo limits |
| Is this forwarder licensed? | Licences and bonds page | FMC licence number, scope, bond status |
| Who files the import security filing? | Customs steps page | Who files, when, what the shipper supplies |
| Can they handle oversize or crated cargo? | Project cargo page | Equipment types, crating, lifting partners |
| How long and how much? | Transit time and quote page | Typical ranges, what changes a quote, quote form |
What questions do shippers ask AI about forwarders?
Shippers ask by lane, cargo, mode and constraint. The first prompt below is this page's buyer seed. The related prompts are modelled by us and were not observed.
Each prompt hides a constraint: a weight, a port, a deadline or a document. Pages that state those constraints plainly are the ones an AI can match to the question.
- best freight forwarder for shipping machinery from India to the US -> India to US machinery lane page
- who files ISF when I import a CNC machine from Pune -> customs steps page
- NVOCC vs freight forwarder for a 40ft container of equipment -> role comparison page
- how long does ocean freight from Nhava Sheva to Houston take -> transit time page with stated ranges
What should a freight company publish first?
Publish one strong page for your best lane, then add pages that remove doubt. A good lane page opens with a two-sentence answer, lists origin and destination ports, modes, cargo types and transit ranges in a table, and ends with a quote form.
Make the form ask for what you need to quote: cargo type, weight, dimensions, ports and ready date. Semrush noted that AI citations bring visits more readily when the page gives readers a clear next step 10. A short quote form is that next step.
Do not publish a rate you cannot honour. Say what moves a quote, such as weight, crating and season, and show a range only if it reflects real recent jobs.
Which rules and claim limits apply to freight companies?
Licence and filing claims must be exact, because AI repeats them. The FMC says ocean freight forwarders and NVOCCs (non-vessel-operating common carriers, which sell ocean space without owning ships) must hold a licence for US trades, and that non-US NVOCCs can get one with a US presence 5. The bond amounts are $50,000 for a US ocean freight forwarder, $75,000 for a US NVOCC and $150,000 for a registered NVOCC 8. State only what you hold, with the licence number.
Rule of thumb for the NVOCC versus forwarder question: a forwarder arranges the shipment for you and may not issue its own bill of lading. An NVOCC sells ocean space on vessels it does not own and issues its own bill of lading. Ask which one will be named on the bill of lading, and ask for the FMC licence number or the NVOCC tariff and bond. Have a licensed forwarder check this wording before you publish it.
For trucking, a broker needs a $75,000 surety bond or trust fund on file, using form BMC-84 or BMC-85 9. Name your authority type correctly, because a broker, a carrier and a forwarder are different things.
On customs, CBP says the Importer Security Filing, known as 10+2, applies to cargo arriving by vessel 7. The filing must be made by the ISF importer or an authorised agent, and the importer's data is due no later than 24 hours before the cargo is loaded at the foreign port 6. A page that explains who files, and what the shipper must supply, answers a common question.
Keep lane pages few and real. Google's spam policy describes doorway abuse as pages made to rank for similar searches that lead users to a less useful page 4. Publish a lane page only for a route you really run, each with its own ports, transit ranges and cargo notes.
How do you measure whether it is working?
Count quote requests per lane, not mentions. Add 'How did you hear about us?' to the quote form and to your sales call notes, because AI influence often shows up as direct or organic visits 10.
Then run a fixed set of 5 buyer prompts on two AI engines, three runs each, every month. Log whether you are named and which page is cited. Answers vary between runs, so count a prompt as won only when you appear in more than half of its runs. See How to Build a Prompt List for AI Visibility Tracking and the free AI Crawler Checker.
What have Chalk Labs and Rahil Jain done in freight, and what have they not?
Chalk Labs has not published results for a freight or logistics company. What transfers is the method: query research, answer pages, technical readiness and measurement. It is the method behind Meru Trophy, a Bengaluru trophy shop, and shilikajain.com, a personal brand. Both are very different from freight.
Chalk Labs sells this service, so weigh our view accordingly. The advice here rests mainly on the public sources cited.
Your first 90 days
Days 1-30
- Write 20 shipper prompts and run 5 of them three times on two AI engines.
- Check that key pages are indexed and readable without scripts.
- Add a 'How did you hear about us?' field to the quote form.
- Pick the one lane and cargo type with the best margin.
Days 31-60
- Publish the lead lane page with a ports table and quote form.
- Publish a licences and bonds page and a customs steps page.
- Add one project cargo or oversize page.
Days 61-90
- Re-run the same prompts and compare with the baseline.
- Add a second lane page and a role comparison page.
- Review quote sources and fix the weakest page.
The first pages to publish
- Lane page for your best route. Matches 'forwarder for X from A to B' directly.
- Licences, bonds and authority. Gives AI a checkable fact it can repeat safely.
- Customs steps for importers. Answers who files ISF and what the shipper supplies.
- Project cargo and oversize handling. Machinery shippers need proof of crating and lifting.
- Transit times and what changes a quote. Buyers ask about speed and cost early.
- NVOCC, forwarder and broker explained. Captures the role comparison question.
- Incoterms and who pays what. A frequent source of shipper confusion.
- About page with legal entity and office details. Confirms the company is real and gives AI an entity to cite.
Trust signals and risks
What AI looks for
- FMC licence number and scope, shown with the legal entity name
- Correct authority type: forwarder, NVOCC, broker or carrier
- Named ports, modes and cargo types you really handle
- Customs process written by a licensed person on your team
- Consistent company details across your site and directories
- Reviews and trade body membership you can show
What can go wrong
- Claiming a licence or authority you do not hold
- Quoting transit times or rates you cannot meet
- Near-identical lane pages that look like doorway spam 4
- Giving customs advice as if it were a broker's legal opinion

How to read these numbers
Chalk Labs reports them from Google Search Console data. We cannot publish the raw console. The shilikajain.com site belongs to Shilika Jain, a Chalk Labs co-founder, so treat it as a demonstration on our own network and not as an independent client result. Meru Trophy is a client of Chalk Labs.
Frequently asked questions
Do freight forwarders need special schema or an llms.txt file to be cited by AI?
No. Google says a page only needs to be indexed and snippet-eligible, and that no special optimisations or additional requirements exist for AI Overviews or AI Mode 1. Clear lane, licence and quote pages matter more than any file.
Which licences should a forwarder show on its website?
Who files the ISF for an import from India?
The ISF importer or an authorised agent files it, and the importer's data is due no later than 24 hours before the cargo is loaded at the foreign port 6. An importer may hire its forwarder or customs broker as the agent. Say who files on your page, and ask your customs broker to review the wording.
Should I publish a page for every port pair?
Only for routes you really run, each with its own details. Google treats pages built to catch similar searches that lead users to a less useful page as doorway abuse 4. Ten distinct, accurate lane pages beat a hundred near copies.
How fast will quote requests arrive?
Nobody can promise a date for the first enquiry, and we hold no freight case data. Plan in months, measure quote requests, and treat AI mentions as a leading signal only. Because outside citations matter for comparison prompts 3, expect directory and review work to take time too.
