AI SEO in Australia: How to Get Recommended by ChatGPT and Google AI
To get recommended by ChatGPT and Google AI search in Australia, let both read your site, then write for how Australians ask: tradie, near me, prices in AUD including GST. Allow OpenAI's OAI-SearchBot, claim your Google Business Profile, build pages around states and cities where you truly operate, and check your claims against Australian Consumer Law before you publish.
- Google sent 87.9% of Australian search referrals in September 2026, and Bing 9.17%.
- Google lists Australia as a place where AI Overviews are available, with English on the language list.
- Australian Consumer Law penalties for corporations can reach tens of millions of dollars per breach.
- New South Wales and Victoria hold the two largest state populations, so state-level pages matter.
- Chalk Labs has no published Australian results. Its only regional proof is Meru Trophy in Bengaluru, India.
How do Australians find businesses with search and AI?
Australians search overwhelmingly on Google, with Bing in clear second place. Statcounter recorded Google at 87.9% of Australian search referrals in September 2026, Bing at 9.17%, Yahoo at 1.54% and DuckDuckGo at 0.92% 1. These are referral clicks, not searches, and they exclude AI assistants 1.
DataReportal counted 26.2 million internet users in October 2025, 97.1% of the population, and 21.0 million social media user identities 2. Identities may not be unique people 2. The page carries no statistics on AI-tool use.
No Australian survey we could open says how many people ask ChatGPT or Google AI Mode to name a local provider, so treat any precise claim with suspicion.

Google lists Australia and English for AI Overviews 3. We found no reliable Australian figure for how many people ask AI assistants to name local providers, and DataReportal's Australia page has no AI-tool statistics 2.
What do Google AI search and ChatGPT need from an Australian site?
Neither tool needs special markup. Google lists Australia among the places where AI Overviews are available, with English on the language list 3. Google says there are no extra requirements or special optimisations for AI Overviews or AI Mode, and a page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet 4.
For ChatGPT, OpenAI says OAI-SearchBot places sites in search results. Allow it in robots.txt, the file that tells bots what they may read, and allow about 24 hours for the change to apply 5.
Run the AI Crawler Checker on your domain. Our guide to allowing AI crawlers in robots.txt shows the lines to add if a firewall or plug-in is blocking bots.
Does Australian wording change which prompts you can win?
Yes, so write the way your buyers talk. Australian trades and shops use their own words, and a page written for Americans can miss them. The table gives modelled examples, not observed data.
Google says it works out a page's language from its visible text, and its guidance does not address dialects 6. So wording and spelling are your levers. Use Australian spelling such as optimise and colour, quote prices in AUD, and say whether GST is included.
| Typical US phrase | Australian phrase | Where to use it |
|---|---|---|
| contractor | tradie or tradesperson | Home-service pages |
| gas station | servo or petrol station | Automotive and fuel pages |
| lawyer | solicitor or lawyer | Practice-area pages |
| tax preparer | tax agent or accountant | Tax and bookkeeping pages |
| pharmacy | chemist | Health retail pages |
Should you build state and city pages in Australia?
Build them only where you operate, because Australia is a country of distinct state markets. Wikipedia lists populations as of March 2026 of 8.67 million in New South Wales, 7.15 million in Victoria, 5.74 million in Queensland, 3.10 million in Western Australia and 1.92 million in South Australia 7.
A Sydney electrician and a Perth one do not compete, so pages should name suburbs and service areas you really cover. Wikipedia describes Sydney's central business district as the country's largest financial and business-services hub 8. B2B firms there often search by sector, not suburb.
A state page needs something true for that state alone, such as a licence, an office, a crew or a price. Fifty copies with the state name swapped can break Google's spam rules. See programmatic pages without spam, and our guide to Sydney for city tactics.
What does Australian Consumer Law mean for your claims?
Every price, saving and result you publish is a legal claim. Wikipedia reports that the ACCC enforces the Australian Consumer Law through the Federal Court. For a corporation it gives the maximum per breach as the greater of A$50 million or three times the benefit gained, and says 30% of adjusted turnover applies only where the benefit cannot be worked out 9. Limits change over time, so confirm the current figure with the ACCC.
The same page records a real case. In October 2024 the court ordered Qantas to pay A$100 million for false or misleading representations about selling tickets on flights it had already decided to cancel 9. Small firms face smaller sums, but the principle is the same.
The page we read does not mention fake reviews, so we make no claim about a specific review rule. Our advice is simple: never buy or write reviews, and keep evidence for every claim. This is not legal advice.
Which privacy and email rules apply to your website forms?
The Privacy Act covers many but not all businesses. The OAIC says the Act applies to private organisations with annual turnover above A$3 million, plus some other organisations 10. The Act sets the Australian Privacy Principles, so check the OAIC page for who else is covered 10.
Email marketing falls under the Spam Act 2003. Wikipedia reports that commercial electronic messages must identify the sender and carry a functional unsubscribe facility, and that harvesting software and harvested address lists are barred 11.
A small firm under the turnover line should still publish a privacy page and honour unsubscribes. This is not legal advice, so check with an Australian adviser.
Which platforms and directories should you claim first?
Claim Google Business Profile first. Google's help page names relevance, distance and prominence as local ranking factors and says paying does not improve rank 12. Prominence counts your reviews and links from outside sites 12.
Yelp launched in Australia in November 2011, with Telstra supplying one million initial listings, but it scaled back outside North America in 2016 13. We have no source ranking Australian directory sites, so use a method instead: search your top three buyer prompts, list the review and directory sites that appear, and claim the first three.
Keep your business name, address and phone number identical everywhere, and your ABN visible on your site. Our guide to local business AI search lists the checks.
How does Australia differ from the US and the UK?
Australia is Google-led but less so than its peers: Google took 87.9% of Australian referrals in September 2026, against 91.39% in the United Kingdom and 93.47% in Ireland 1. Its state structure is the bigger difference, so write for the states where you operate. For comparison, also read our United States page.
For New Zealand buyers, see our New Zealand guide, because many Australian firms sell across the Tasman.
What has Chalk Labs actually done in Australia?
Chalk Labs has not published Australian results. Its published search results are Meru Trophy, a local trophy shop in Bengaluru that reached 27,300 Google clicks and 2.3 million impressions in 16 months, and the personal-brand site shilikajain.com 14.
The method we would bring is query research, answer pages, technical readiness and measurement. Australian wording, rules and competitors would change the detail. We do not guarantee rankings or citations in any market.
Rules and platforms that shape results
Rules to know
- Australian Consumer Law (enforced by the ACCC). Bars misleading conduct. Corporate penalties per breach can reach the greater of A$50 million or three times the benefit, and limits change over time. Qantas was ordered to pay A$100 million in October 2024.9
- Privacy Act 1988. Applies to private organisations with turnover above A$3 million and some others. Sets the Australian Privacy Principles.10
- Spam Act 2003. Commercial electronic messages must identify the sender and include a functional unsubscribe facility. Address harvesting is barred.11
Platforms that matter here
- Google Business Profile: local ranking rests on relevance, distance and prominence 12
- Google AI Overviews, available in Australia 3
- ChatGPT search, fed by OpenAI's OAI-SearchBot 5
- Yelp, launched in 2011 but scaled back outside North America 13
- Your own site, with ABN, state licences and AUD pricing shown
What works in Australia
- Write with Australian wording and spelling, and quote prices in AUD with GST stated 6.
- Build state and city pages only where you have a licence, crew, office or price for that place 7.
- Show your ABN and state licence numbers on your site, with the date you checked them.
- Claim your Google Business Profile for each branch and keep details identical across directories 12.
- Keep proof for every price and result claim, since the Consumer Law penalties are large 9.
Mistakes to avoid
Frequently asked questions
Do Australian businesses need different SEO from US ones?
The base work is the same: readable pages, clear answers and trustworthy proof. The differences are wording, AUD pricing with GST, state-level service areas and Australian Consumer Law. A page written for Americans can miss local prompts such as tradie or chemist, so rewrite rather than copy.
Does Google show AI Overviews in Australia?
How big are penalties under Australian Consumer Law?
For corporations, Wikipedia reports the maximum per breach as the greater of A$50 million or three times the benefit, with 30% of adjusted turnover only where the benefit cannot be worked out 9. Confirm the current limit with the ACCC. Qantas was ordered to pay A$100 million in October 2024 9. Small firms rarely face such sums, but keep evidence for every claim.
Does the Privacy Act apply to my small business?
The OAIC says the Act covers private organisations with annual turnover above A$3 million, plus some others 10. Check the OAIC page for who else is covered. Even if you fall below the line, publish a privacy page. Ask an Australian adviser about your case.
