AI SEO in the Netherlands: How to Get Recommended by ChatGPT and Google AI Search

The short answer

A business in the Netherlands gets recommended by ChatGPT and Google AI search by publishing clear answer pages in the language its buyers ask in, Dutch for local and consumer queries, English for international B2B, and by being mentioned on trusted Dutch and industry sites. Google needs no special AI markup, only indexed pages that can show a snippet 7.

  • The Netherlands ranks first of 123 countries for English skill, so English pages can compete, but Dutch pages win local intent.
  • Dutch generative AI use is high: 44.70% of people used it in 2025, against 32.66% across the EU.
  • Work use is 26.56%, so Dutch business buyers are likely to ask an assistant before they call.
  • Rotterdam's port and the logistics sector mean many Dutch firms sell to foreign buyers, who may ask in English.
  • Use separate Dutch and English URLs with hreflang rather than one mixed page.

Should your pages be in Dutch or English?

Use Dutch when the buyer is in the Netherlands and the purchase is local, and English when the buyer is abroad or the product is international. Many Dutch firms need both. The choice is real here because English skill is unusually high: the EF English Proficiency Index 2025 ranks the Netherlands first of 123 countries and regions, with a score of 624 4.

High English skill does not mean Dutch buyers type English. It means an English page is readable to them, so you are not shut out. But a Dutch searcher asking in Dutch is likely to be matched with Dutch pages first. A local plumber, dentist or accountant who publishes English only is giving that ground away.

The table below is a decision rule, not a law. It shows which language to lead with for common cases.

Build local prompts for the Netherlands

Pick a business type and a place. Copy the prompts, then ask them in the AI assistants your buyers use and see who gets named.

Your 4 prompts

  • beste boekhouder in Amsterdam
  • boekhouder Amsterdam ervaringen
  • wat kost een boekhouder in Amsterdam
  • boekhouder in de buurt van Amsterdam voor een offerte

Dutch prompts use 'ervaringen' and 'wat kost' constantly. Also test the English version, since many Dutch buyers and expats ask in English.

Why does the logistics hub matter for AI visibility?

It means many Dutch companies sell to buyers who are not Dutch, and those buyers are likely to ask English questions about carriers, customs and warehousing. This is our inference, not measured data. The Port of Rotterdam is the largest seaport in Europe, and Wikipedia reports 428.4 million tonnes of cargo in 2025 6.

An international buyer who asks an assistant for a freight forwarder in Rotterdam, or a fulfilment centre near Schiphol, gets an answer built from pages that name the city, the service and the proof. Many suppliers write only 'solutions' copy and never say what they handle, where, and for whom.

So write the plain facts: which cargo types, which terminals or regions, what certifications, typical lead times and what you do not do. Put them in English on a stable URL. Our guide to query fan-out explains how an assistant splits one buyer question into several searches, which is why each fact needs its own findable passage.

Which platforms and sources matter in the Netherlands?

Start with Google Business Profile for local firms, then the review and directory sites your buyers actually use in your trade. Local firms should keep name, address and phone number identical everywhere.

For B2B, industry associations, trade fairs, port and logistics bodies and niche trade press are stronger proof than general directories. A short, factual mention on such a site tells an assistant that someone independent vouches for you.

Bing is small by volume, at 4.57% of referrals 1, but registering your site in Bing Webmaster Tools is a quick job.

  • Google Business Profile with Dutch category names and opening hours.
  • Your trade's main review or comparison site, chosen by asking five customers where they look.
  • Industry bodies and trade press, for B2B proof in English.
  • Chamber and municipality business listings, which are stable and easy to match to your details.

What rules apply to online claims and data in the Netherlands?

Two sets matter most: EU data protection law and the consumer regulator's guidelines on online persuasion. The European Commission says the GDPR covers organisations established in the EU, and non-EU organisations that offer goods or services to people in the EU 9.

The Netherlands Authority for Consumers and Markets, known as ACM, published guidelines on protecting the online consumer on 11 February 2020 and later released a 2024 PDF version 5. They ask at what point persuasion turns into deception, and ACM uses them in its oversight 5. The page we could read did not list specific rules on reviews or influencers, so read the PDF before you publish testimonials or paid placements.

In practice: do not invent scarcity or fake reviews, label sponsored content, and keep claims you can prove. This is general guidance, not legal advice.

What should you publish first?

Publish one page per question your buyers ask before they enquire, and put the answer in the first two sentences. For most firms that is five to eight pages, not a hundred.

Make each page specific to the Netherlands. Name the cities you serve, the Dutch rules or standards you work to, and the price in euros. Generic global copy loses to a page that names Eindhoven or Utrecht.

Dutch and English prompts to test (modelled, not observed)
  • Wat kost een boekhouder voor een ZZP'er in Utrecht? (cost of an accountant for a freelancer)
  • Wat is de beste tandarts in Groningen voor spoed? (best dentist for an emergency)
  • Which freight forwarder in Rotterdam handles temperature-controlled cargo?
  • Best fulfilment partner near Schiphol for a European webshop
  • Hoe kies ik een SEO-bureau in Amsterdam? (how do I choose an SEO agency)

How should you set up Dutch and English versions?

Give each language its own URL and link them with hreflang, which tells search engines which page serves which language 8. The reciprocity rules are explained in our France guide.

Translate the body text, and use valid codes such as nl-NL and en-GB, since a country code alone is not valid 8.

Then check access. Run the AI Crawler Checker and read how to allow AI crawlers in robots.txt. Compare with the neighbouring Germany and Ireland guides if you sell across borders. We have no Dutch results; the logistics advice above is untested by us.

Rules and platforms that shape results

Rules to know

  • GDPR. Applies to organisations established in the EU and to non-EU organisations offering goods or services to people in the EU.9
  • ACM online consumer guidelines. Published February 2020 with a 2024 PDF version; set standards on persuasion versus deception online. Read the PDF for reviews and influencer detail.5

Platforms that matter here

  • Google Search, AI Overviews and AI Mode
  • ChatGPT and other assistants
  • Google Business Profile
  • Bing and Microsoft Copilot
  • Trade-specific review and comparison sites
  • Industry association and trade press sites

What works in the Netherlands

  • Pick a lead language per page and publish separate nl and en URLs with hreflang.
  • For logistics and trade firms, publish English fact pages on cargo types, regions, certifications and lead times.
  • Name Dutch cities and euro prices on local service pages.
  • Earn mentions from industry bodies and trade press, then link to them from your proof page.
  • Set up Bing Webmaster Tools and Google Business Profile in the same afternoon.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming good Dutch English means you can skip Dutch pages for local queries.
  • One page that mixes Dutch and English paragraphs, which is hard to quote.
  • Vague logistics copy that never says what you handle or where.
  • Reading the Statcounter Yandex figure as Dutch consumer preference.

Frequently asked questions

Do Dutch buyers search in English or Dutch?

Both. The Netherlands ranks first of 123 countries for English skill 4, so English pages are readable. But local intent is usually phrased in Dutch, and Dutch pages match those words directly. Lead with Dutch for local buyers and English for international ones.

How common is AI use in the Netherlands?

Common. Eurostat found 44.70% of people aged 16 to 74 had used generative AI tools in the previous three months in 2025, against 32.66% for the EU 2. Work use was 26.56%. These figures show tool use, not which assistant people prefer.

Does Google need special markup for AI answers in the Netherlands?

No. Google says there are no extra requirements for AI Overviews or AI Mode beyond being indexed and snippet-eligible 7. Structured data should match the visible text. Good crawlable pages and clear answers do the work.

Is Bing worth the effort here?

Only as a small extra. Bing had 4.57% of Dutch search referrals in September 2026 1. Registering in Bing Webmaster Tools is quick, but your Dutch pages, Google profile and third-party mentions come first.

Does Chalk Labs have Dutch clients?

No, and we show no Dutch results. We would bring the method, and we would test the English logistics prompts first.
