Best Schema Markup Generators: Free and Paid Options Compared

The short answer

On WordPress, use the schema built into Yoast or Rank Math. On other sites, a free JSON-LD generator plus Google's Rich Results Test is enough. Google says no special schema is needed for its AI features, so mark up only what visitors can see, test it, and skip anything that promises a ranking boost.

  • Schema is optional for Google's AI features. Its guide says structured data isn't required and no special markup is needed.
  • Yoast and Rank Math output schema automatically. Free generators suit custom sites. Always test the result.
  • Markup must match visible page content. Hidden or false markup can lead to a manual action.
  • FAQ rich results stopped appearing in Google Search on 7 May 2026, so do not add FAQ markup for a display boost.

What is the best schema markup generator?

The best generator is the one you will keep correct. For WordPress sites that means the schema built into Yoast or Rank Math, which fills the code from your page data. For any other site, use a free JSON-LD generator and paste the result, then check it with Google's Rich Results Test.

Schema markup is structured code, usually JSON-LD, that tells machines what a page is about, such as an article, a business or a person. Google says JSON-LD is the recommended format and is the easiest to implement and maintain at scale 1. A schema generator writes that code from a form.

Which one fits you?

Four questions to choose how to create your schema. This is a rule of thumb, not advice.

CMS plugin

Yoast or Rank Math fills schema from your page data on WordPress.

Best when
  • You run WordPress.
  • You publish often.
  • You want schema to follow your edits.

Web generator

A free tool writes JSON-LD from a form, and you paste it in.

Best when
  • Your site is custom or on another platform.
  • You need a few blocks only.
  • You can paste code into your templates.

Hand-written template

You edit a short JSON-LD template yourself.

Best when
  • You need one or two blocks.
  • You are comfortable with code.
  • You will review them each quarter.

A short quiz

Question 1 of 4What platform is your site on?
Question 2 of 4How many page types need markup?
Question 3 of 4How often do page details change?
Question 4 of 4How comfortable are you with code?

Do you need schema markup for AI search?

Not for Google. Its guide says structured data isn't required for generative AI search and there is no special schema.org markup to add 3. Bing is more positive about schema: it says schema is code that helps search engines and AI systems understand content, and that crawlability, metadata, internal linking and backlinks remain essential 11.

Our reading is that schema is a tidy, low-risk way to state facts clearly, and it can earn rich results for some types. It is not a shortcut to AI citations. If you have limited time, fix crawl access and write clear pages first. Our comparison of schema markup versus plain HTML explains the trade-off.

How should you choose a schema generator?

Pick on accuracy and upkeep, not on the number of types. Five points matter.

  • Output: does it write JSON-LD, the format Google recommends 1?
  • Fit: does it cover the types your pages need, such as Organization, Article, LocalBusiness or Product?
  • Upkeep: does it update when page data changes, or is it a one-off paste?
  • Control: can you edit every field and remove what you do not need?
  • Testing: does it point you to a validator, and does it avoid promising rich results?

How do the main options compare?

The table covers options we opened on 20 October 2026. It combines generators and testers, because you need both. It rests on vendor pages and was not a hands-on test of each product.

Plugin, web generator or hand-written: which should you pick?

Pick a plugin if you run WordPress, since it fills the code from each page and stays in step with edits. Yoast adds an Article with an author by default 8. Rank Math lets you set a default type per post type and customise one post at a time 9.

Pick a web generator if your site is custom or built on another platform and you need a handful of blocks. Put Organization on the home page and page-level types on their own pages. Pick hand-written code only for one or two blocks you will review often. Never run a plugin and a pasted block for the same type on one page, because duplicate blocks of the same type can conflict. Check the Rich Results Test output for repeats.

What should you mark up first?

Start with Organization on your home page and Article with an author on guides (a second example follows). Add LocalBusiness if you serve a place, and Breadcrumb for navigation. Each block must describe what visitors can read on that page.

Below is a minimal Organization block for a fictional business. Change every value to match your own page, and do not copy facts you cannot show.

Minimal Organization and Article JSON-LD (fictional examples, edit before use)
  • <script type="application/ld+json">
  • {
  • "@context": "https://schema.org",
  • "@type": "Organization",
  • "name": "Brightside Dental",
  • "url": "https://example.com/",
  • "logo": "https://example.com/logo.png",
  • "sameAs": ["https://www.linkedin.com/company/your-company"]
  • }
  • </script>
  • Article with an author, for a guide page (fictional values, edit before use):
  • <script type="application/ld+json">
  • {"@context": "https://schema.org", "@type": "Article", "headline": "Your page title", "author": {"@type": "Person", "name": "Your Author"}, "datePublished": "2026-01-01"}
  • </script>

Should you still add FAQ schema?

Add it only if you want machines to read the page's questions and answers, not for a search display. Google's documentation says FAQ rich results no longer appear in Google Search from 7 May 2026, and it removed the FAQ documentation on 15 June 2026 4. Before that, display was limited to well-known government and health sites 4.

Treat Google's page as the current word on FAQ. If you do keep FAQ markup, the questions and answers in it must match visible text 2.

How do you test schema before and after publishing?

Test every page type once before launch and again after any template change. Google recommends the Rich Results Test for validating structured data, and Search Console rich result reports for catching problems after deployment. It notes that templating or serving issues can break markup later 1.

The tester checks if the code can produce rich results. It does not tell you whether the markup is true. A human must compare the code with the page text, because Google says not to mark up content that is not visible to readers and that violations can bring a manual action 2. Even valid markup is not guaranteed to show 2.

What does the Chalk Labs schema generator do?

Our schema generator builds JSON-LD for seven common types: FAQ, HowTo, Article, Organization, Person, local business and breadcrumb. It runs in your browser and updates the code as you type.

It does not build product, review, event or video markup, and it cannot tell you if Google or an AI assistant will use the result. We do not guarantee rankings, citations or rich results. If you need a plan beyond markup, Chalk Labs also sells AI SEO services, which is a commercial interest to weigh.

Frequently asked questions

Is schema markup required for AI Overviews or AI Mode?

No. Google's guide says structured data isn't required for generative AI search and that there is no special schema.org markup you need to add 3. It is still useful for rich results where Google supports them, and for clear statements of facts.

What is the best free schema generator?

It depends on your site. Yoast and Rank Math have free schema on WordPress 89. For other sites, use a free JSON-LD web tool, including ours, and test the output in Google's Rich Results Test 5.

Which schema format should I use?

Use JSON-LD where you can. Google lists JSON-LD, Microdata and RDFa as supported, and recommends JSON-LD as the easiest to implement and maintain at scale 1. Schema.org says its vocabulary works with all three 7.

Can wrong schema hurt my site?

Yes. Google says not to mark up content that is not visible to readers, and a structured data issue can lead to a manual action that removes eligibility for rich results 2. Keep the code true to the page and test it.

Will the Chalk Labs generator give me rich results?

No. Google says it does not guarantee that structured data will show in results, even if it passes the test 2. Our tool only writes the code. Chalk Labs also sells AI SEO services, so weigh our advice with that in mind.
