What Is Schema Markup, and Does It Help AI Visibility?

The short answer

Schema markup is extra code that labels the facts on a page, such as who wrote it, what the product costs, or which business it describes. Google says no special schema is needed to appear in its AI features. Microsoft says schema helps AI systems understand content. No independent test we found proves it raises AI citations, so add it for accuracy, not as a trick.

  • Schema markup is code that tells machines what a page's facts mean, usually written as JSON-LD.
  • Google says structured data is not required for its generative AI search and no special markup is needed 12.
  • Microsoft says schema helps search engines and AI systems understand content, but gives no uplift figure 3.
  • Markup must match what visitors can see. Hidden or false markup can trigger a manual action 5.

What is schema markup?

Schema markup is a block of code added to a web page that labels its facts in a standard way. Google calls this structured data: a standardised format for giving information about a page and classifying its content 4. The shared vocabulary comes from schema.org, which says it helps search engines and other applications better understand your content 6.

Without it, a page of text is just text. A search tool has to guess that a number is a price and 'Priya Shah' is the author. With markup, you say so directly.

Google supports three formats: JSON-LD, Microdata and RDFa. It recommends JSON-LD if your site's setup allows it 4. JSON-LD sits in one block in the page's code, so it is the easiest to add and check.

Explain it at your level

Picture a shop where every item has a clear price tag, a name and a short label saying what it is. A visitor finds things faster and makes fewer mistakes. Schema markup does the same for a web page: it gives machines a plain label for each fact. It is helpful, but a well-labelled empty shelf still sells nothing, so the page itself must be good.

What did an AI search tool run for this question?

On 20 October 2026 we put this page's question to Gemini with Google Search switched on. It ran three searches: 'schema markup AI visibility', 'how does schema markup affect AI understanding of content' and 'schema markup benefits for AI'. One of the three, 'schema markup benefits for AI', assumes schema helps, which shows how the framing of a question can steer the answer.

The eleven sites attached to Gemini's answer were mostly marketing agencies, software vendors and blogs. Many of them sell schema or AI visibility services. That is a reason to check claims against primary sources, which is what this page does.

This was one engine and one run, so treat it as a sample, not a rule.

Does schema markup help AI visibility?

The honest answer is: it depends on the AI system, and nobody has published a clean test. For Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, Google says a page needs to be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet, and that there is no special schema.org structured data you need to add 1. Its generative AI guide, updated 10 July 2026, repeats that structured data is not required 2.

Microsoft takes a more positive line. A Bing post from 8 October 2025 says schema is a type of code that helps search engines and AI systems understand your content 3. It also says crawlability, metadata, internal linking and backlinks remain essential 3.

Neither company publishes a number for how much schema raises citations. We did not find an independent controlled study in the sources we opened, so any percentage you see quoted is a vendor claim until proven otherwise.

Which schema types are worth adding?

Add the types that describe what your page really is. Google's gallery of supported structured data lists around two dozen features (25 when we checked on 20 October 2026), including Article, Organization, Product, Local business, Breadcrumb and Profile page 7. Each type has its own rules.

For a small business, start with Organization on the home page. Google says it can help Google understand your organisation's administrative details and disambiguate it in search results, and recommends placing it on the home page or one page that describes the organisation 8. No properties are required, but name, url, logo and sameAs are recommended 8.

A short, honest guide to common types

OrganizationHome or about pageWho you are, your logo and your other official profiles
Article with authorBlog posts and guidesWho wrote it and when it was updated
ProductProduct pagesName, price, availability and reviews you really hold
Local businessA page for each locationAddress, opening hours and phone number
BreadcrumbPages deep in a siteWhere the page sits in your structure
FAQQuestion pagesQuestion and answer pairs, but see the next section

Is FAQ schema still worth using?

FAQ markup no longer earns the rich result it once did. Google limited the feature to well-known government and health sites in September 2023, and its documentation says the feature stopped appearing in Google Search on 7 May 2026 9. The current gallery lists neither FAQ nor How-to 7.

That does not make a visible FAQ section a bad idea. Real questions with direct answers are good content for people and for AI tools. Just do not expect a special display from the markup itself.

What are the rules for doing it safely?

Markup must tell the truth about the visible page. Google says not to mark up content that readers cannot see, and that the page body must describe what the JSON-LD describes 5.

Breaking the rules has a cost. A structured data issue can lead to a manual action, which removes rich result eligibility. Google says it does not change where the page ranks in web search 5.

So never add fake review stars, invented prices or authors who do not exist. Keep the markup in step with the page every time you edit it.

A minimal Organization block in JSON-LD (replace the details with your own)
  • <script type="application/ld+json">
  • {
  • "@context": "https://schema.org",
  • "@type": "Organization",
  • "name": "Example Plumbing Ltd",
  • "url": "https://www.example.com",
  • "logo": "https://www.example.com/logo.png",
  • "sameAs": ["https://www.linkedin.com/company/example"]
  • }
  • </script>

What should you do about schema this week?

Spend an hour, not a month. Schema is a small hygiene task next to writing pages that answer real questions.

Follow this order:

  • Add Organization markup to the home page with your real name, logo and official profile links.
  • Add Article markup with a named author to your main guides.
  • Add Product or Local business markup only where the page really shows those facts.
  • Test pages with Google's Rich Results Test and fix errors.
  • Re-check after redesigns. Our free Schema Generator builds the JSON-LD for you.
  • Spend the rest of your time on clear, answer-first pages. See how to write content AI engines quote.

What do people get wrong about schema and AI?

The first myth is that schema is a shortcut to being cited. Microsoft names crawlability, metadata, internal linking and backlinks as still essential, and describes strong content as fresh, authoritative, structured and semantically clear 3. Schema supports that, it does not replace it.

The second myth is that schema alone makes AI believe you. Machines read the label, but they still weigh the page, the site and what others say about you.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need schema markup to appear in Google AI Overviews?

No. Google says a page only needs to be indexed and eligible to show in Search with a snippet, and that there is no special schema.org structured data to add 1. Markup can still help with other search features, so keep it accurate.

Does ChatGPT or Perplexity read schema markup?

We found no official statement either way from OpenAI or Perplexity in the sources we opened, so we cannot say. Microsoft says schema helps AI systems understand content 3. Treat claims about other assistants as unproven.

What is the best schema format?

JSON-LD. Google supports JSON-LD, Microdata and RDFa, and recommends JSON-LD if your site's setup allows it 4. It lives in one block of code, which makes it simple to add, test and update.

Can wrong schema hurt my site?

Yes, in limited ways. Google says a structured data issue can cause a manual action that removes rich result eligibility, though it does not change web ranking 5. Never mark up content that visitors cannot see.

How long does schema take to add?

For someone comfortable editing page templates, a basic Organization and Article setup is often an hour or two. That is our estimate, not a measured figure. Our Schema Generator produces the code. Check it with Google's Rich Results Test before you publish.
