Can Google Search Console Show AI Visibility? What It Covers and What Tools Add
Partly. Search Console counts clicks and impressions from Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode inside its normal Web reports, and since June 2026 it has a Generative AI performance report with impressions by page, country, device and date 12. It cannot show ChatGPT, Perplexity or Gemini answers, competitor mentions, or prompts you choose. Paid trackers fill those gaps.
- Search Console covers Google's AI features only, and AI traffic sits inside normal Web results 3.
- The June 2026 Generative AI report adds impressions by page, country, device and date, not clicks 2.
- Bing Webmaster Tools and Microsoft Clarity add free Copilot and citation data 56.
- Third-party trackers add your own prompts, competitors and other engines, but sample answers that vary.
Can Google Search Console show your AI visibility?
It shows your visibility inside Google's own AI features, and nothing else. Google says sites that appear in AI Overviews and AI Mode are included in Search Console's overall traffic and reported under the Web search type 3. A click on an external link in either feature counts as a click, and normal impression rules apply 1.
A buyer who asks ChatGPT, Perplexity or Claude never touches Search Console. For those engines you need other sources, which this page lays out in order of cost. We start with what is free.
What does Search Console actually report about AI?
Two things. First, the standard Performance report counts AI traffic. An AI Overview takes a single position, and every link inside it shares that position 1. In AI Mode, each follow-up question counts as a new query, so its clicks and impressions go to that new query 1.
Second, Google announced Search Generative AI performance reports on 3 June 2026. They report impressions, meaning how often your URLs appeared in generative AI features in Search and Discover. You can split them by page, country and device, and view them by hour, day, week or month 2. Google says it reached all websites worldwide as of 31 August 2026 2.
Google's own guide tells site owners to use this report to measure visibility 4. The announcement lists impressions only, so do not expect click or position data from it.
What can Search Console not tell you?
It cannot see anything outside Google. Search Console does not include data from Search Labs experiments, and the AI features documentation covers only Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode 13. Nothing in it reports on ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude or Gemini.
It also cannot show what you do not rank for. You see your own URLs when they appear, not the prompts where a competitor was named instead of you. A brand mention with no link also leaves no trace.
What free reports fill the gaps?
Two Microsoft tools. Bing Webmaster Tools has an AI Performance report, in public preview since 10 February 2026. It counts how often your content is cited as a source in Microsoft Copilot, AI summaries in Bing and select partner integrations 5. It also lists grounding queries, the phrases the AI used to find your content, but Microsoft says that list is only a sample 5.
Microsoft Clarity has a Citation dashboard with page citations, share of authority, query topics and cited pages. Microsoft says it tracks citation activity only, not rankings, impressions or click-through rates 6. It can compare your domain with competitors on the same queries 6.
How do free reports and paid AI visibility tools compare?
The table compares Search Console, with the free Microsoft reports, against paid trackers. Paid trackers differ a lot from each other, so see our guide to AI visibility tracking tools for the groups.
| Question | Search Console, Bing, Clarity | Paid AI visibility tools |
|---|---|---|
| Which engines? | Google's AI features in Search Console 3. Copilot and Bing in Bing's report 5. | Usually several, such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude. Coverage varies by vendor and plan. |
| Whose prompts? | Real searches and citations on your site. You cannot add test prompts. | Prompts you choose, run on a schedule. |
| Competitors? | Clarity compares your domain with competitors 6. Search Console does not. | Usually yes, on the same prompts. |
| Brand mentions without a link? | Not reported. Bing and Clarity count citations of your pages 56. | Most tools report mentions and citations separately. |
| Clicks and traffic? | Search Console counts clicks from Google's AI features 1. The Generative AI report shows impressions 2. | Mostly visibility only. Traffic still comes from your analytics. |
| Cost? | Free. | From low tens of dollars to custom quotes. Prices change often. |
| Main risk? | Blind to every non-Google, non-Microsoft engine. | Results are samples that differ between runs and tools. |
How reliable are third-party AI visibility tools?
Useful for trends, weak as a ledger. Digiday reported in May 2026 that agency leaders see these tools as benchmarks, and one said that three different tools given the same prompts return three different answers 8. Yext analysed 491,972 local cases from February to August 2026: four AI engines named the same top business only 4% of the time 9.
Google adds a warning of its own. It says third-party tools do not have access to Google's internal ranking data and cannot guarantee performance 10. Read tool dashboards as samples, then confirm with your own analytics and with customers.
What should a small team check each month?
A 45-minute routine covers most needs without paying for a tracker. Run it on the same day each month so the numbers compare fairly.
- 1. Search Console > Generative AI report: note impressions by page. Which pages appear?
- 2. Search Console > Performance > Web: filter your top question-style queries. Note clicks.
- 3. Bing Webmaster Tools > AI Performance: note total citations and top grounding queries.
- 4. Clarity > AI Visibility > Citation: note page citations and share of authority.
- 5. GA4 > Acquisition: count visits from the AI Assistant channel.
- 6. In ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini, ask 10 buyer questions. Log: named? linked? who else?
- 7. Ask each new customer how they found you. Record any AI answer.
When is a paid tracker worth it?
Pay when the free routine stops answering your questions. Three signs: you need to watch more than about 30 prompts, you must report competitors to a client or board, or you sell in several markets and languages.
Before paying, try the spreadsheet route in manual vs automated prompt tracking and the AI prompt list builder. Chalk Labs sells AI SEO audits, so we gain if you hire help. We would still start free.
Frequently asked questions
Does Search Console show ChatGPT traffic?
No. Search Console reports Google Search, including its AI features, and nothing else 3. To see ChatGPT visits, use your analytics. GA4 has an AI Assistant channel for visits from assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot 7. See tracking AI traffic in GA4.
Does the Generative AI report show clicks?
Can I filter Search Console to AI Overviews only?
Is the Bing AI Performance report worth setting up?
Yes, because it is free and shows Copilot and Bing citations. Treat it as a sample: Microsoft says grounding queries are a sample of citation activity and counts do not show ranking or importance 5.
Do I still need a paid AI visibility tool?
Only if you need other engines, competitors or your own test prompts. Search Console cannot supply them. Many small sites do well with the free reports plus a monthly prompt log; see how to measure AI share of voice.
