What Is AI Referral Traffic?

The short answer

AI referral traffic is the set of website visits that start when someone clicks a link inside an AI assistant such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude or Perplexity. You can measure part of it in Google Analytics 4 with the AI Assistant channel. It is small for most sites, about 0.43 percent of visits across the sites Ahrefs tracks in September 2026, and it under-counts real influence 23.

  • It counts only clicks. Someone who reads your name in an AI answer and searches for you later shows up as search or direct traffic.
  • In an Ahrefs benchmark of 115,254 sites, all AI assistants together sent 0.43 percent of visits in September 2026 2.
  • GA4 has a default AI Assistant channel, but it excludes Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, which count as Organic Search 1.
  • Some AI platforms strip referrer data, so a share of AI visits lands in direct traffic 3.

What is AI referral traffic?

AI referral traffic is the visits to your website that come from a link inside an AI assistant's answer. A person asks ChatGPT for a supplier, sees your name with a link, and clicks. Your analytics records a visit that came from that assistant.

A referral in analytics is any visit that arrives from another site, with the other site's address passed along as the referrer. AI assistants are treated like other sites in this respect.

Be clear about what it is not. It is not the number of times an AI mentions you. A mention without a click leaves no trace in your traffic reports, so referral traffic measures only the part of AI visibility that turned into a visit.

Explain it at your level

Imagine a shop with a door counter that clicks once for every person who walks in. AI referral traffic is the count of people who walked in because an AI assistant pointed them to your door. It misses people who heard about you from the assistant and walked in later by another route, so the counter always reads low.

How much AI referral traffic should I expect?

For most sites, a small share of total visits today. Ahrefs tracks sites with its web analytics and updated its benchmark on 19 October 2026. For September 2026 it reported that all AI assistants combined sent 5.3 million visits, or 0.43 percent of traffic, across 115,254 tracked sites 2.

ChatGPT was the largest source in that data, with 4.3 million visits and 0.34 percent of traffic. Meta AI sent 0.05 percent, Gemini 0.02 percent, and Claude and Perplexity 0.01 percent each 2. Ahrefs' sample is made up of sites using its analytics, so it may not represent your market. These are averages across many sites, so your own figure could be well above or below them. Our page on how much traffic ChatGPT sends goes deeper.

Small does not mean unimportant. A visitor who arrives after an AI recommended you may be further along in their decision. We did not find independent data we trust enough to quote on conversion rates, so measure it on your own site.

What searches does an AI assistant run for this question?

On 20 October 2026 we gave this question to Claude with a web search tool. It ran two searches: "what is AI referral traffic" and "measure ChatGPT referral traffic in GA4".

This was one run on one day, so read it as an example of an angle, not a rule.

How do I measure AI referral traffic in GA4?

Start with the built-in channel. Google Analytics 4 has an AI Assistant default channel for visits from sources such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Deepseek, Copilot and Grok. It applies when the medium is set to ai-assistant, which happens when the referrer matches Google's list of AI assistants 1. Open your traffic acquisition report and look for the channel.

If you want control, build a custom channel group. Google's help page says an Editor or above opens Admin, then Data display, then Channel groups, adds a channel with a "matches regex" condition, and drags it above Referrals so traffic is assigned to it first. It also says to update the pattern when the assistants you track change 6. The example below is a starting pattern for the Source dimension, not Google's own list.

Our step-by-step guide to tracking AI traffic in GA4 and the GA4 AI Traffic Setup tool show the screens.

Example regex for a custom GA4 channel, applied to Source. GA4 matches the whole value, so each term is wrapped in .*; check it against your own Source values
  • .*(chatgpt|openai|perplexity|gemini|copilot|claude).*

Why does AI referral traffic get under-counted?

There are three blind spots. First, some platforms do not pass referrer data. Ahrefs says plenty of AI platforms strip it, so the visit appears as direct traffic 3. Ahrefs illustrates this with a test click from Microsoft Copilot that showed up as direct 3.

Second, Google's AI features are hidden in plain sight. GA4 counts AI Overviews and AI Mode inside Organic Search, not in the AI Assistant channel 1. Microsoft Clarity gives the reason: those features share the same referrer as normal Google search, so they cannot be reliably separated 4.

Third, influence without a click is invisible. Search Console treats a click on a link in AI Mode as a click, and counts a follow-up question as a new query 5. But a person who reads your name in an answer and types it into Google later is counted as branded search.

How can I estimate the visits I cannot see?

Use a baseline. Ahrefs suggests recording direct and no-referrer traffic before an AI content push, then watching it afterwards. If direct traffic rises and nothing else explains it, such as a campaign, PR or a seasonal peak, it is fair to assume part of the rise came from AI 3.

Ahrefs also shows how to put a rough value on it. At a 2 percent conversion rate, 1,000 unexplained extra direct visits would suggest about 20 AI-influenced conversions 3. That is the author's example, not a finding, so use your own rate. The table below applies the same logic to an illustrative site.

Illustrative estimate for a made-up site (replace every number with your own)
StepExample value
Direct visits per month before the AI content push3,000
Direct visits per month three months later3,600

Your direct-traffic enquiry rate2 per 100 visits

What else should I track besides clicks?

Add signals that do not depend on a referrer. Ahrefs recommends branded search volume, web mentions as a leading indicator, and self-reported attribution, meaning a "How did you hear about us?" question with AI tools in the dropdown 3.

Self-reported answers catch the buyer who read about you in an assistant and then phoned. Our guide to setting up self-reported attribution shows the wording. Pair it with tracking of the prompts you care about, as in measuring AI share of voice.

A related loss is traffic that arrives at pages that do not exist. See hallucinated URLs for how to catch it.

What an AI assistant searches when it answers this

We gave the question below to AI search tools and recorded the web searches they ran behind the scenes. This is called query fan-out. Each phrase is a page you could publish to be found and cited.

The prompt

“what is AI referral traffic and how do I measure it”

The searches it ran
  • what is AI referral traffic
  • measure ChatGPT referral traffic in GA4

Observed October 20, 2026 using Claude web search. Claude agents were told to run 6 to 10 searches, so that count is our setting, not Claude's own choice. Assistants differ and change often, so treat this as a sample, not a rule. See how we collect it.

Frequently asked questions

What counts as AI referral traffic?

Visits that start from a link in an AI assistant such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot, Claude or Perplexity. GA4's AI Assistant channel covers many of them, but it excludes Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, which count as Organic Search 1.

How do I see ChatGPT traffic in GA4?

Check the AI Assistant default channel in your traffic acquisition report, or build a custom channel group with a regex on Source and place it above Referrals 16. Update the pattern when assistants change their domains.

Why is my AI traffic so low?

It is low for most sites. Ahrefs found all AI assistants sent 0.43 percent of visits in September 2026 2. Some visits are also hidden because platforms strip referrers and the traffic lands in direct 3.

Is traffic from Google AI Overviews included?

Not in the AI Assistant channel. Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode are classified under Organic Search 1, and Clarity says they share the normal Google referrer and cannot be reliably separated 4.

Does AI referral traffic convert better?

We cannot say from the sources we checked. Some vendors publish conversion claims, but we did not verify them. Measure it on your own site by comparing enquiry rates for AI visits and other channels over the same period.
