How to Earn Brand Mentions With Digital PR
To earn brand mentions for AI search, give journalists and publishers something they cannot write without you: original data, a named expert with a clear opinion, or a useful tool. Pitch it to outlets your buyers read, disclose any free product or payment, and never buy links. Then track which mentions AI answers actually repeat.
- Brand mentions across the web track AI visibility more closely than link metrics, though that is correlation, not proof of cause.
- Offer original data, a named expert view or a useful tool. A press release alone rarely earns coverage.
- Paid links need rel sponsored or nofollow, and free products need clear disclosure under FTC guidance.
- Citations to news and research pages fade within weeks, much like most page types, so plan a steady flow of stories, not one launch.
Why do brand mentions matter for AI search?
AI answers describe brands using what other sites say about them. In an Ahrefs study of 75,000 brands, branded web mentions correlated with AI visibility at 0.66 to 0.71 across three AI platforms, against 0.27 for Domain Rating on ChatGPT 1. Ahrefs states plainly that correlation is not causation 1.
Google's own guidance says generative AI features can reflect what is said about products across blogs, videos and forums, and that seeking inauthentic mentions across the web is not as helpful as it might seem 2. Digital PR, meaning outreach that earns coverage in publications, is one honest route to those mentions. What does the evidence say about earned media?
Muck Rack analysed over 1 million links cited by AI tools in July 2025 and reported that 89% came from earned media, meaning coverage you did not pay for, and 27% from journalistic content 3. It does not say how those two figures overlap, and it does not name the AI tools or the method 3. Muck Rack sells a tool for this, so read the numbers as direction, not fact.
The same report says 49% of cited links were journalistic for queries that imply recency 3. That fits a simple rule: news helps most when the question is about something new.
Which pitch angles earn coverage?
The ones that give a journalist a reason to write that does not depend on you being famous. Ask: what can this reporter publish tomorrow because of me that they could not publish yesterday?
The table lists five angles, what each needs, and a plain example. The examples are invented for illustration, not past results.
| Angle | What you need | Illustrative example | Effort |
|---|---|---|---|
| Expert comment | A named person with a clear view | A tax adviser explains a new filing rule in 100 words | Low |
| Local or niche stat | Your own anonymised data | Average repair delay by month from your jobs | Medium |
| Survey | Enough real responses to defend, ideally 100 or more (our rule of thumb, not a standard), and a method note | A survey of 150 owners on late payment | Medium |
| Original study | A dataset and an honest write-up | Analysis of 500 public listings | High |
| Free tool or calculator | A developer and a use case | A cost estimator for a common job | High |
How do you turn your own data into a story?
Start with a question your customers already ask, then count something you already hold. Support tickets, quotes, bookings and survey replies are all data. Remove names, group the numbers, and look for one finding that surprises you.
Publish the full method on your own site: sample size, dates, how you cleaned the data, and what the data cannot show. That page becomes the citable source, and reporters link to it. Add a short summary table so a machine can read the headline numbers without parsing a chart image.
Keep the claim small enough to defend. 'In our completed repair jobs this year, most delays waited on parts' is a safe sentence if your records say so. A claim about 'the industry' from one firm's data will be picked apart.
- Question: How often are repair jobs delayed by parts?
- Data: 212 completed jobs, 1 January to 30 September 2026.
- Definition: a delay is any job finished more than 2 days after the quoted date.
- Limits: one company, one region, no seasonal adjustment.
- Contact: [name, role, email] for the raw table.
How do you pitch expert commentary?
Pitch a person, not a company. Journalists want a named expert with a clear view on a live topic, ready to be quoted in two or three sentences. Prepare a one-line bio that states only what is true and checkable.
Respond fast when a reporter asks for a source, and answer in plain language. A quote that starts with the answer is easier to use and, for the same reason, easier for an AI engine to lift cleanly.
What rules apply to links, gifts and payments?
Never pay for editorial links without marking them. Google's spam policies list paying for links, or sending free products in exchange for a review that includes a link, as link spam 4. Paid links are acceptable when they carry rel nofollow or rel sponsored 4.
The US FTC adds a disclosure duty. It says free products given with an expectation of promotion must be disclosed, and that your company stays responsible for what others do on your behalf, including an outside firm 5. If you hire a PR agency, put disclosure rules in the contract.
How long does a mention last in AI answers?
Profound measured citation half-life across 883,000 pages. Among pages that kept being cited, news, announcements and research had a median of 27 days against 28 to 29 for other types, so the difference is small. Most pages fade faster still: Profound's overall median is 11 days 6. Profound sells AI tracking software 6.
The practical lesson is to build a rhythm. Aim for a steady flow of useful stories each quarter, and keep a permanent page for each study so that old coverage points to a living source.
How do you measure whether it is working?
Keep a media sheet with one row per mention: outlet, date, link, whether the link is followed, and whether the page names you accurately. Each month, run your tracked prompts and note which sources the AI cites. Match those sources to your sheet.
The match tells you which outlets matter for your category. Pitch more of those and fewer of the rest. Our guides on auditing your brand in AI search and measuring AI share of voice show how to run the prompts.
When is digital PR the wrong move?
Skip it when you have no data, no named expert and nothing new to say. Skip it too when your own site fails basics such as crawlability, because mentions cannot help a page AI cannot read. Fix the site first with the AI crawler checker.
Frequently asked questions
What is digital PR in plain words?
It is outreach that earns coverage in publications and on other websites by giving them something worth reporting, such as data, expert comment or a tool. Unlike advertising, you do not pay for the placement.
Do press releases help with AI search?
Muck Rack says press releases are cited much less often than other content, though it argues they can prompt coverage that AI later cites 3. Treat a release as a way to deliver the story, not as the story.
Can I buy mentions or links?
How many mentions do I need?
No reliable benchmark exists. Studies show correlation between mentions and AI visibility 1, not a number that guarantees a result. Judge progress by whether AI answers name you for your tracked prompts.
Does a small business need digital PR?
Not always. Local and niche outlets, trade bodies and expert quotes cost little. Start there, and only build large studies when you have unique data and time to maintain the pages.
