What Are Brand Mentions and Why Do AI Engines Weigh Them?
A brand mention is any place on the web that names your business, with or without a link. In Ahrefs' study of 75,000 brands, branded web mentions correlated with AI Overview visibility more strongly than backlinks did. Correlation is not proof of cause, and Google warns that seeking inauthentic mentions is not as helpful as it seems. Earn real ones.
- A brand mention is any page that names your brand, linked or not. Ahrefs calls the count 'branded web mentions' 1.
- In 75,000 brands, branded web mentions correlated at 0.664 with AI Overview appearances, against 0.218 for backlinks 1.
- Ahrefs says correlation is not causation; mentions may simply mark brands that are already strong 2.
- Google says seeking inauthentic mentions is not as helpful as it might seem 3. Fake reviews can also break US law 5.
What is a brand mention?
A brand mention is any place on the web where your business is named. It can sit in a news story, a Reddit thread, a podcast page, a directory, a customer's blog post or a YouTube video. It may or may not carry a link back to you.
Marketers split mentions into two kinds. A linked mention includes a hyperlink to your site. An unlinked mention names you in plain text only.
A mention is not the same as a review or a backlink. A backlink is a link from another site to yours, a mention is the name itself, and a review is a customer's opinion. One page can contain all three.
What searches did Gemini run about brand mentions?
On 20 October 2026 we asked Gemini, with Google Search switched on, why brand mentions matter for AI search visibility. It chose three searches: 'importance of brand mentions for SEO', 'how AI search algorithms use brand mentions' and 'brand mentions and AI search visibility'.
Notice what it did. It looked for the SEO angle and the AI angle separately, then for the overlap. The eight sites attached to the answer included searchengineland.com and several small agency and link-building sites, which sell services in this area. This was one run on one engine.
So the claims you meet on this topic often come from people who sell mentions. That is why the studies and official statements below matter more than agency blog posts.
What does the data say about mentions and AI visibility?
The strongest public data is a pair of Ahrefs studies. In May 2025 Ahrefs analysed 75,000 brands and found branded web mentions had the highest correlation with Google AI Overview appearances, at 0.664 on a scale where 1 is a perfect match. Backlinks scored 0.218 and Domain Rating 0.326 1.
A December 2025 update covered ChatGPT, AI Mode and AI Overviews. Branded web mentions correlated at 0.664 for ChatGPT, 0.709 for AI Mode and 0.656 for AI Overviews. YouTube mentions scored about 0.737 overall, the highest of any factor tested 2.
Brands in the top quarter for web mentions averaged 169 AI Overview mentions, against 14 for the 50 to 75 percent band, in the first study 1. The effect is big, but see the limits below.
| Signal | AI Overviews (May 2025) | ChatGPT (Dec 2025) | AI Mode (Dec 2025) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Branded web mentions | 0.664 1 | 0.664 2 | 0.709 2 |
| Branded anchors | 0.527 1 | 0.511 2 | 0.628 2 |
| Branded search volume | 0.392 1 | 0.352 2 | 0.466 2 |
| Domain Rating | 0.326 1 | 0.266 2 | 0.285 2 |
| Backlinks | 0.218 1 | very weak 2 | very weak 2 |
Do brand mentions cause AI visibility?
We cannot say they do. Ahrefs states that correlation is not causation, and notes it is unclear whether these factors influence AI mentions directly or are simply markers of existing brand strength 2. A famous brand gets mentioned a lot and also gets cited a lot, for many reasons.
The sample also leaves people out. Only domains with a Domain Rating above 40 and a top keyword of at least 800 monthly searches were included 1. It says nothing about small or new sites. And Ahrefs sells the Brand Radar tool that collected the data 1.
A better reading is this: mentions are a sign of the thing AI tools seem to like, a brand many independent sources talk about. The practical task is to become that brand, not to buy the signal.
Why would AI engines weigh brand mentions at all?
Nobody outside the companies knows the exact reason, so this section is reasoned, not proven. AI search tools build answers from many sources, and a brand that several independent pages describe in the same way is easier to describe confidently.
There is also a direct search effect. In an Ahrefs study of 66.6 million free, logged-out ChatGPT responses, 14.4% ran extra searches, and 6.8% of those searches used the site: operator to look inside one site. Among the roughly 160 most-searched sites, about three in four (75.9%) of those site: searches targeted brand sites 6. Some searches do go looking for named brands, though most responses ran none.
If nobody ever writes your name, there is little for a tool to find when a buyer asks about your category.
Where should the mentions appear?
Mentions are likely to help most when they are independent, relevant and describe you in a buyer's terms. We have no study that ranks relevant against unrelated mentions, so treat this as a sensible priority, not a proven ratio.
Look first at the places where buyers already compare options: trade press, review sites, community forums, podcasts, partner pages, local news and video. Ahrefs found YouTube mentions correlated more strongly than any other factor 2, though that again is correlation.
| Kind of mention | Example | Safe to pursue? |
|---|---|---|
| Earned | A trade magazine quotes your founder | Yes, this is the aim |
| Owned | Your own blog or social posts | Yes, but weak alone: it is you talking about you |
| Partner | A supplier lists you as a client, with consent | Yes, if true and agreed |
| Paid, disclosed | A sponsored article labelled as such | Yes, with clear labels |
| Fake or undisclosed | Invented reviews, staff posing as customers | No. Fake reviews and undisclosed insider posts breach the FTC rule 5 |
What are the rules and risks?
Do not manufacture mentions. Google's spam policies call buying or selling links for ranking, and excessive link swaps, link spam 4. The US Federal Trade Commission's rule, announced 14 August 2024, bans fake or AI-generated reviews and testimonials, undisclosed insider reviews, and buying or selling fake social media followers or views when the buyer knew, or should have known, they were fake and used them to misrepresent influence for commercial purposes 5.
The FTC says it can seek civil penalties against knowing violators 5. If you are outside the US, check your local advertising rules, because we have not reviewed them here.
The safe rule is simple: if a stranger would be surprised to learn how the mention got there, do not do it.
How can you earn real mentions this month?
Start by finding out what exists. Search your brand name in quotes, then ask three AI tools about your category and note who they name.
Then run a small, honest programme:
- List the 10 sites where your buyers look before they choose. Note whether each names you.
- Publish one thing others want to cite, such as your own survey, price benchmark or free template.
- Offer an expert comment to a journalist or trade writer, with your real name and role.
- Ask happy customers for honest reviews, without scripting what they say.
- Add your brand to relevant partner, supplier and association pages where you truly belong.
- Track new mentions monthly in a simple sheet and note which AI answers change.
- Date | Where | Page URL | Linked? | Context (what it said) | Source type
- 2026-10-20 | Trade site | https://example.org/post | No | Named as an option for X | Earned

Frequently asked questions
Do unlinked brand mentions help SEO?
They may, but no one outside the search companies can prove it. Ahrefs found branded web mentions correlated with AI Overview visibility at 0.664, above backlinks at 0.218 1. That is correlation, not a tested cause, so use it to set priorities, not to promise results.
Are brand mentions more important than backlinks?
Can I buy brand mentions?
How do I check if AI tools mention my brand?
Ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity the questions your buyers ask, then record who is named. Repeat monthly with the same prompts. Our prompt list builder helps you pick the prompts.
How long does it take to earn mentions?
There is no reliable timeline. Real mentions depend on doing something worth talking about, and people write about it at their own pace. Plan in months, track monthly, and do not trust anyone who promises a date or a count.
