How to Get Cited From Review Sites Like G2 and Capterra
To get recommended by AI through review sites, find which sites AI assistants already cite for your category, complete your profile there with facts that match your own website, and ask real customers for honest reviews. Follow the site's incentive rules and US FTC rules. Never buy, filter or fake reviews, because that risks removal and legal penalties.
- Review sites matter most in software and agency buying. Check which sites AI cites in your category before you spend any time.
- Ask every real customer for a review. Never ask only the happy ones, and never attach a condition about the star rating.
- Keep your profile facts identical to your own site: price, category, who it is for, and what it does not do.
- Reviews you control on your own site cannot earn Google star features for your own business markup.
Do AI engines actually cite review sites?
Yes, in some categories, and buyers say they trust those citations. G2's March 2026 survey of 1,076 B2B decision makers found 45% called review site citations the most confidence-inspiring signal in an AI answer 1. The same survey ranked GenAI chatbots first for influencing software shortlists at 54%, with review sites second at 43% 1.
G2 sells review software, so treat its figures as a vendor's view. Its June 2026 survey of 1,038 buyers put review sites first at 38% and AI chatbots just behind at 37% 2. Both surveys agree on the main point: buyers use AI and review sites together, not one or the other.
Independent data is thinner. An Ahrefs study of 750 prompts found that list platforms such as G2 for software and Clutch for agencies were among the cited third-party pages, next to blog lists 3. Another Ahrefs test of 20,000 US prompts found that on comparison questions only 46.4% of citations went to official sites, so more than half went to other sources 4.
Which review sites should you work on?
Work only on the sites that AI assistants already cite for your category. Our sources name G2 for software and Clutch for agencies 3. They do not give a verified list for other industries, so we will not guess one.
Use the table below as a starting point, then test your own category with the method in the example. It takes about an hour and replaces guesswork with evidence.
- 1. Write 10 prompts a buyer would ask, e.g. 'best project software for a 20-person agency'.
- 2. Run each in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Mode.
- 3. Open every cited link. Write down the domain.
- 4. Count which review or list domains appear 3 or more times.
- 5. Check whether you have a profile on each, and whether it is complete.
| Your category | Review sites named in evidence | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| B2B software | G2 3 | Build a full profile and start a review programme. |
| Agencies and services | Clutch 3 | Same approach, with project-level detail. |
| Consumer products | The Ahrefs article lists hands-on testers such as RTINGS among sites it saw gain citations 4; we have no verified list of consumer review sites. | Look for independent tests in your category; run the prompt test first. |
| Any other field | No verified list in our sources | Run the prompt test below before investing. |
How do you set up a profile that AI can quote?
Treat the profile as a second copy of your product page, written for a stranger. Fill every field, and keep each fact identical to your own site. Mismatched prices or categories make both pages less trustworthy to a machine reading them together.
Write the description as an answer: what the product is, who it is for, and who it is not for. Add a pricing summary, integrations and a short list of use cases. A line about who should not buy builds credibility with readers and with the models that quote you.
How do you collect reviews without breaking the rules?
Ask every real customer, treat all answers the same, and never tie a reward to the rating. G2 says vendors may ask customers for reviews but must not collect them in a way that segments out negative reviews or targets only positive ones 5. If it finds evidence of that, it will remove the reviews 5.
G2 caps the value of any incentive at $100 and labels incentivised reviews as such 5. It also bars employees of the product's company, and of direct competitors, from reviewing it 5. We could not verify Capterra's current review guidelines for this guide, so read them before you run a campaign there.
The law sits above the site rules. The FTC's reviews rule took effect on October 21, 2024 6. Its staff guidance says you may offer incentives, but not with an express or implied requirement that the review be positive 6. It gives 'Tell us how much you loved your visit' as an example of wording that implies it 6.
What do you do with reviews once you have them?
Reply to each review, and mine them for the words buyers use. If five reviewers say 'setup took one afternoon', that phrase belongs on your own pricing and comparison pages. Buyers then see the same claim in two places, which supports it.
Do not paste the reviews into your own star-rating markup. Google says that if a business controls the reviews about itself, pages using LocalBusiness or Organization markup are ineligible for the star review feature 7. Link to your profile instead, and quote individual reviews with their source named.
What mistakes waste the most time?
The first mistake is chasing every site. Ahrefs found that branded web mentions correlate with AI visibility at roughly 0.66 to 0.71 across ChatGPT, AI Mode and AI Overviews, against 0.27 to 0.33 for Domain Rating 8. That is correlation, not proof of cause, but it points toward being named in many places over perfecting one.
The second is a bulk burst. Fifty reviews in one week looks odd to readers and to moderators, so spread requests over time. The third is leaving old facts in place: when your pricing changes, update the profile the same day.
How do you check that it worked?
Re-run the same 10 prompts every month and log three things: whether your profile is cited, whether your brand is named in the answer, and what the answer says about you. Changes can take weeks, and you should expect noise because AI answers vary between runs.
Also ask new leads where they first heard of you. A free-text field on your enquiry form is enough. Our AI Prompt List Builder turns your category into prompts you can track, and how to measure AI share of voice explains the scoring.
When is a review site programme not worth it?
Use a simple threshold: if fewer than 3 of your 10 prompts cite any review domain, stop here. Stop too if you cannot get at least a handful of real customers to write. A thin profile with three old reviews can hurt more than no profile. In that case put the effort into your own comparison pages and into earning mentions elsewhere, as covered in what brand mentions are.
Frequently asked questions
Can I pay for reviews on G2 or Capterra?
How many reviews do I need before AI starts citing me?
No reliable data exists. We found no study that gives a review count that triggers citations. Aim for steady, recent, detailed reviews from real customers, and track whether your profile appears in your own prompt tests.
Do negative reviews hurt my chances of being recommended?
Should I put G2 review widgets on my own site?
You can display them, but Google says pages with business-controlled reviews about the business itself are ineligible for star features under LocalBusiness or Organization markup 7. Link out to the profile and quote reviews with attribution.
Is this worth it for a local business?
Our sources do not name local review sites for AI citations, so test your own category first. The principles here still apply: real reviews, consistent facts and no gating.
