The Cost of Being Invisible in AI Answers
If ChatGPT does not mention your business, buyers who ask it about your category do not consider you. You are not penalised, you are simply left out of the shortlist. In G2's March 2026 vendor survey, 54% of B2B software buyers ranked AI chatbots as the top influence on their shortlist. The cost scales with how many of your buyers ask, and you can test it free. 1
- Being unmentioned means lost consideration, not a penalty. The buyer never sees your name.
- 51% of B2B software buyers start with an AI chatbot more than Google (G2). Only 12.7% of US AI users do (Semrush survey).
- The loss rarely shows in analytics because AI sends under 1% of traffic and hides much of it as direct visits.
- A rough model multiplies buyer questions, AI use, your absence rate, and your customer value. Use your own numbers.
- A ten-prompt test takes under an hour and tells you where you stand.
What happens if my business is not mentioned by ChatGPT?
Buyers who ask ChatGPT about your category get an answer that does not include you. They then compare the businesses that were named, and you are never part of that comparison. Nothing visible happens to your site, which is why the loss goes unnoticed.
G2's March 2026 survey of 1,076 B2B decision-makers shows why this matters. 54% ranked GenAI chatbots as the top source shaping software shortlists, ahead of review sites at 43%. 1 69% said a chatbot led them to pick a different vendor than they first planned, and 33% bought from a vendor they had not heard of before. 1
That last figure cuts both ways. A chatbot can introduce you to buyers who did not know you, and it can also introduce a rival instead.
How many of your buyers actually ask AI first?
It depends heavily on who your buyers are, and the surveys disagree. In G2's B2B sample, 51% said they start software research with an AI chatbot more often than with Google. 1 Initial prompts were split between category questions (33%), competitor questions (31%) and requirements questions (22%). 1
Consumers look different. A July 2026 survey of 2,338 US adults, run by Exploding Topics and published by Semrush, found that 12.72% of AI users start purchase research with a chatbot, behind search engines at 29.89%. Yet 29.96% of all consumers never use chatbots. 2
Both can be true because the groups differ. Self-reported surveys also overstate behaviour, and Semrush sells AI visibility products. 2 Treat 12% and 51% as the two ends of a range, then find where your own buyers fall by asking them.
What does being left out actually cost?
The cost is the enquiries you would have won from buyers who asked and were not shown your name. The same Semrush survey found 57.5% of AI users had decided not to buy something because of chatbot information, and 59.27% had found a brand or product through a recommendation. 2
It is also true that chatbots shape local choices. 87.41% of users who research companies with AI said they would consult AI before hiring a local business. 2 That is a stated intention, not measured behaviour.
No reliable public data tells you the revenue lost per absent answer. The model below makes the arithmetic visible so you can argue with its assumptions.
Can you put a number on it? A worked example
Yes, as a rough estimate. The example uses clearly illustrative numbers for a business whose customers are worth three thousand dollars each. Replace every input with your own.
The result is small at these settings, which is the honest point. The cost grows quickly when the customer is worth more or when more buyers ask AI.
- 400 buyer questions a month x 30% who ask an AI = 120 buyers asking AI
- 120 x 60% of answers that name a rival and not you = 72 absences
- 72 x 3% who would enquire = about 2.2 enquiries
- 2.2 x 20% close rate = about 0.4 customers
- 0.4 x $3,000 = about $1,300 a month, or about $15,500 a year
- Double the customer value and the AI share, and the yearly figure roughly quadruples.
When is being invisible not a big problem?
It matters less when your buyers rarely use AI, when most sales come from referrals or walk-ins, or when your category has one obvious leader that buyers name directly. Pew Research found people clicked a normal result in 15% of visits without an AI summary and 8% with one, so classic search still carries real weight. 4 Pew's data covers general web users, not your buyers.
It matters more when buyers compare options, when deals are large, and when your category is crowded. Those are the cases where a shortlist of three names decides the outcome.
How do you check whether you are invisible?
Run a ten-prompt test in a logged-out browser. Ask the questions a buyer would ask, note who is named, and repeat across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Mode. Answers vary run to run, so repeat each prompt a few times.
The free query fan-out explorer shows the searches an assistant runs behind a prompt. The guide to auditing your brand in AI search gives the full routine.

What fixes it, and how fast?
The fix is to become the kind of business sources talk about. Ahrefs' correlation study of 75,000 brands found branded web mentions and YouTube mentions tracked AI visibility most strongly, with links far weaker. It reports correlation only. 6
Pair that with clear pages for the questions buyers ask, and make sure AI crawlers can reach your site. Start with the AI crawler checker, then read how to get recommended by ChatGPT and how long AI SEO takes. We do not guarantee citations, and a timeline for your market depends on competition.
Frequently asked questions
Will my website be penalised if ChatGPT doesn't mention it?
No. Not being named is an omission, not a penalty. ChatGPT simply does not include you in its answer, so buyers who rely on it do not see your name. The cost is lost consideration.
How do I know if ChatGPT mentions my business?
Ask it directly. Use ten buyer-style prompts in a logged-out browser and note who is named. Repeat a few times because answers vary. Free tools such as the query fan-out explorer show what it searches. Paid trackers can automate this.
How many people use ChatGPT to choose a business?
Can I pay ChatGPT to mention my business?
Not for organic answers. Mentions come from what the model finds and trusts. The Semrush survey notes ChatGPT ads exist on its Free and Go plans, but they are separate from organic answers and are not what this page covers. 2
What is the first thing to fix?
Make sure AI crawlers can read your site, then publish a clear page for each question buyers ask. Earn mentions on other sites that your buyers trust. Rahil Jain's team at Chalk Labs sells this work, so compare it with doing it yourself.
