How Long Does AI SEO Take to Show Results?

The short answer

Expect months, not days. Google says a change can show in a few hours or take several months, and an Ahrefs poll, last updated in January 2024, puts typical SEO results at three to six months. Access and crawling move first, enquiries last. Gushwork, a lead-generation vendor, published first-lead times of 10 to 75 days for its own clients (not Chalk Labs clients); treat them as anecdotes, not a benchmark. 121114

  • Google says a change can show in hours or take several months, and suggests waiting a few weeks before judging.
  • Bot access moves in about a day, crawling in days to weeks, rankings in months. No reliable public number exists for time to first AI citation.
  • An Ahrefs poll with 3,680 responses puts typical SEO results at three to six months. Vendor ROI data points to 6 to 12 months.
  • Chalk Labs' two published search cases are measured in months, and neither reports a time to first lead.
  • Judge the channel on enquiries across months three to six, not on one early lead or one ranking.

How long does AI SEO take to work?

Plan on months. AI SEO means making your site easy for Google and AI assistants to find, understand and cite. Google says some changes take effect in a few hours and others take several months, and it suggests waiting a few weeks before judging the work. 1

Results arrive in stages. A bot must be allowed in, then crawl the page. Crawling means a bot has fetched the page. Indexing means the search engine has stored it so it can show it. After that the page must match real questions, and a buyer must act on it. Each stage has its own delay, and the table shows the ranges we could source.

Published ranges for each stage. Where no reliable range exists, the table says so.

All milestones

  1. Day 0Pages go live

Start the clock here, because published cases word the starting point differently.

Evidence: Midwest Power Products and Meridian Packaging count from going live in Gushwork's published cases (third-party). 1114

  2. Day 1Bots can read the page

OpenAI says robots.txt changes take about 24 hours to reach its search systems. Perplexity says up to 24 hours.

Evidence: OpenAI and Perplexity documentation. 34

  3. Day 10Fastest published first lead

Midwest Power Products reports a first qualified lead within 10 days of going live. This is a third-party result published by Gushwork, not a Chalk Labs client.

    Evidence: Gushwork-published. 11

  4. Day 14Google's crawl window

Google says a crawl after your request can take a few days to a few weeks, and it does not promise inclusion.

    Evidence: Google Search Central. 6

  5. Day 30One-month checkpoint

Of the pages that reached Google's top 10 in Ahrefs' study, 40.82% did so within a month. Google suggests waiting a few weeks before judging.

Evidence: Ahrefs data from 2023 samples. 7 Google guidance. 1

  6. Day 75Slowest published first lead

Meridian Packaging reports its first website lead after 75 days. This is a third-party result published by Gushwork.

    Evidence: Gushwork-published. 14

  7. Day 90Start of the typical range

Ahrefs' poll puts typical SEO results at three to six months, so month three is the earliest typical checkpoint.

Evidence: Poll of 3,680 responses on LinkedIn and X. 2

  8. Day 180Six-month checkpoint

This is the end of the poll range. Ahrefs suggests updating pages that are still outside the top 10 by about now, and First Page Sage places positive ROI in a 6 to 12 month window.

Evidence: Ahrefs. 7 First Page Sage, a vendor with no published sample size. 9

  9. Day 365One year

In Ahrefs' 2023 samples, 1.74% to 6.11% of new pages reached the top 10 within a year.

    Evidence: Ahrefs. 7

  10. Day 480Meru Trophy total

Chalk Labs reports 27,300 Google clicks for Meru Trophy over 16 months. This is a cumulative total, not a time to first lead.

Evidence: Chalk Labs case studies, figures as reported on that page. 15

What moves first, and what moves last?

Access moves first. OpenAI says a robots.txt change takes about 24 hours to reach its search systems, and Perplexity says up to 24 hours. 34 Robots.txt is the small file that tells bots which pages they may fetch. It is the one step you control directly.

Discovery comes next and takes days to weeks. IndexNow says search engines can need days to weeks to notice a change without it, and Google says a crawl after your request takes a few days to a few weeks. 56 A crawl request does not guarantee that a page will appear at all. 6

Rankings and citations follow. Google's AI features draw on its normal search systems, so a page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet. 10 Leads come last, because a buyer has to find the page, read it and then get in touch.

What do published studies say about how long SEO takes?

In a poll last updated in January 2024, Ahrefs says SEO typically takes three to six months to show results, and also says there is no fixed time frame. The range comes from polls on LinkedIn and X with 3,680 responses, so it reflects experience, not a controlled test, and it is nearly three years old. 2

Ahrefs also measured new pages. It found that 1.74% of 1 million random new pages reached Google's top 10 within a year, and 6.11% of 2 million non-empty English pages did. Of the pages that did reach the top 10, 40.82% got there within a month. 7 Ahrefs suggests updating a page that is still outside the top 10 after about six months. 7

Site age matters too. In a 2025 sample of 1.3 million US keywords, only 13.7% of top-10 pages were under a year old, and the average number-one page was five years old. 7 Read that as a warning that new sites start behind.

First Page Sage, an agency, reports that positive ROI comes over a 6 to 12 month period, with peak results in the second or third year. Its break-even figures run from 5 months for construction to 14 months for legal services. 9

Can results come in days instead of months?

Sometimes, but the evidence is thin. Gushwork, a company that sells inbound lead generation, publishes third-party case studies that report a first lead at 10 days for Midwest Power Products and 75 for Meridian Packaging, with two other clients between those figures, and some of its timings conflict with other numbers on the same pages. 11121314

These are third-party results for Gushwork's own clients, not Chalk Labs clients, and we do not know how many clients waited longer. The full breakdown is in can AI SEO produce leads in 15 days.

What makes AI SEO faster or slower?

Five things change the clock most: how old and trusted your site is, how competitive the topic is, how much you publish, how narrow your questions are, and how long your sales cycle runs. Ahrefs lists site history, resources, competition, goals and consistent execution as the main factors. 2

Site history counts most. Ahrefs cites Google's John Mueller saying it could take up to a year for Google to work out where to rank new sites. 2 A narrow question, such as one product with one specific use, faces fewer strong pages than a broad one. That point is our reasoning, and the sources do not test it.

Your sales cycle sets the last delay. A shop can see an order a day after a visit. A company that sells equipment may need weeks of talks after the first enquiry, so revenue trails traffic by months. Track enquiries first and revenue second.

How fast do AI assistants start citing a new page?

No reliable public number exists. We found no study that reports the days from publishing a page to its first AI citation, so any exact promise would be a guess. OpenAI says only that robots.txt changes reach its search systems in about 24 hours, which covers access, not citation. 3

What is known is that citations fade. Profound studied 883,000 pages across seven answer engines and found that the median page loses half its citation share within 11 days of peaking. The median time from a page's first citation to that point was 42 days. 8

Citation share is how often a page is cited compared with other pages in its category. Profound sells AI-visibility tools, so treat the figures as rough. The practical lesson is that AI visibility needs upkeep, not a one-time launch. See what an AI citation is.

How long did Chalk Labs' own results take?

Both of our published search cases are measured in months, not days. Meru Trophy, a trophy shop in Bengaluru, went from near-zero search visibility to 27,300 Google clicks and 2.3M impressions over 16 months, at an average position of 6.9. 15

The personal-brand site shilikajain.com, a site we built, ranked first for the phrase Fractional PR Manager Crypto within a month of launch, with 8.5k impressions in three months. That is one narrow phrase, not a lead count. 15

Neither case reports a time to first lead, so they neither support nor rule out a very fast result. Chalk Labs sells AI SEO, so weigh our reading with that interest in mind.

When should you judge whether AI SEO is working?

Judge pages at three months and the channel at six. In the first weeks, check only that pages are crawled and indexed, since Google suggests waiting a few weeks before judging the work. 1 At about six months, update any page that has not reached the top 10, as Ahrefs advises. 7

Set the decision rules before you start. Write down what counts as an enquiry, who checks them, and what you will do if the number is flat at month six. Google tells site owners to ask any SEO what results to expect, in what timeframe, and how success is measured. It also says no one can guarantee a number-one ranking. 16

If you need leads within a few weeks, use another channel while this one builds. See AI SEO vs paid ads, and the 30-day AI SEO sprint for the first month. The AI crawler checker tests day-one access, and how to test whether your changes worked covers the checks that follow.

Frequently asked questions

How long does SEO take to work?

An Ahrefs poll with 3,680 responses puts typical results at three to six months, while Google says a change can take a few hours to several months. Vendor ROI data places positive returns at 6 to 12 months. Your timing depends on site age, competition and how much you publish. 219

How long does it take for ChatGPT or Perplexity to mention my site?

No reliable public number exists. OpenAI says robots.txt changes reach its search systems in about 24 hours, and Perplexity says up to 24 hours, but that covers access, not citation. Citations also fade: Profound found the median page loses half its citation share within 11 days of peaking. 348

Is AI SEO faster than traditional SEO?

We found no study that compares the two. Google says its AI features use its core ranking systems and need a page that is indexed and eligible to show with a snippet, so the same crawling and ranking delays apply there. Other assistants may differ, and no data says by how much. 10

Can SEO produce leads in two weeks?

Possibly, but nobody can promise it. Gushwork published cases for its own clients, not Chalk Labs clients, with first leads at 10 to 13 days and one at 75 days, and some figures conflict with other timings on the same pages. Plan for months. 11121314

When should I change the plan?

Review at three months and again at six. If pages are indexed but get no impressions by month three, revisit the questions you target. If enquiries are flat at month six, update the weakest pages, as Ahrefs advises after about six months, and weigh the result against your cost. 7
