Is SEO Dead Because of AI?
No. Google still held 89.94% of worldwide search engine share in September 2026, and Google says optimizing for its AI search is still SEO. What has weakened is the click. Studies find fewer visits where an AI answer shows, and news sites lost the most traffic. The job has widened from ranking to being found, cited and chosen. 12
- Google says optimizing for generative AI search is still SEO, and its AI features use its core ranking systems.
- Studies agree that AI answers cut clicks on regular results, but they disagree on how much, and none is a controlled test.
- News and media sites have lost the most search traffic so far. We found no comparable study for local or industrial businesses.
- AI assistants send very little traffic, so the work now includes being cited and measuring enquiries, not clicks alone.
- Do not cut search work on headlines. Test your own Search Console data and your own enquiry sources.
Is SEO dead because of AI?
No. SEO is not dead, but the click has weakened. Google held 89.94% of worldwide search engine share in September 2026. 1 Google also says optimizing for its generative AI search is optimizing for the search experience, and so it is still SEO. 2
What is weaker is the visit. Where an AI answer appears, studies find fewer people click through to websites, and news publishers have lost the most traffic. The numbers are below, including where the studies disagree.
So the question is no longer whether to do SEO. It is what to measure, and which of your pages still earn a visit.
What has not changed?
The plumbing is the same. Google says its generative AI features rely on its core Search ranking systems to find pages, and a page must be indexed and eligible to show in Search with a snippet. It also says you do not need new AI-specific files or markup to appear in Google Search. 2
Google's own numbers point to more searching, not less. In July 2026, Sundar Pichai said AI Mode had passed 1 billion monthly active users since its global expansion, and that it is driving an incremental increase in Search queries overall. 3 That is Google describing its own product, and it says nothing about clicks.
AI features also count inside Search Console. In June 2026 Google announced Search Generative AI performance reports in Search Console. 15
How much have clicks fallen?
Studies agree on direction and disagree on size. They measure different things, none is a controlled experiment, and Google disputes the gloomiest. In August 2025 Liz Reid, who heads Google Search, wrote that total organic click volume from Google Search to websites has been relatively stable year over year. 4
Outside studies find fewer clicks where an AI answer shows. The studies we read imply roughly 38% to 65% fewer clicks to regular results on those queries. That is our arithmetic: Pew's 8% against 15% is 47% lower. Other studies found smaller falls or none. Full study-by-study table: zero-click searches and your traffic. 567
| Study | What it measured | Result | Limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pew Research Center, March 2025 5 | Google visits by 900 US adults | A regular result was clicked in 8% of visits with an AI summary and 15% without. Only 1% of visits clicked a link inside the summary. | Observational. Queries that trigger summaries differ from those that do not. |
| Ahrefs, December 2023 to December 2025 6 | 300,000 keywords, top-ranking page, desktop | An AI Overview correlated with 58% lower click-through for the top result. | Modelled against a forecast. Correlation only. |
| Semrush, January to October 2025 7 | 200,000 plus keywords | The zero-click rate fell from 33.75% to 31.53% on keywords that gained an AI Overview. | Semrush says those searches may already have been unlikely to end in a click. |
Which sites lost the most traffic?
News and media sites, so far. Chartbeat data reported by the Reuters Institute show Google organic search traffic to over 2,500 news sites fell by a third globally, and by 38% in the US, between November 2024 and November 2025. The Reuters Institute notes it is unclear how much of this is due to AI Overviews. 8 Press Gazette found that organic search traffic to the ten biggest US news websites was down 16% over the past year and 31% over two years to July 2026. 9
News is not a typical business. Publishers earn from visits and answer many informational questions, which is where AI answers appear most. In Semrush's data, 91.3% of AI Overview queries were informational in January 2025, falling to 57.1% by October as they spread to other query types. 7 A clinic, a plumber or an industrial supplier sells something an answer cannot deliver. We found no comparable study for those fields.
Not every marketer saw a fall. HubSpot's 2026 State of Marketing report, covering over 3,400 marketers, found that nearly 30% reported decreased search traffic as consumers turn to AI tools. The same report says marketers still rank website, blog and SEO as the top ROI channel. 13
What has actually died?
Three habits are in trouble, though SEO is not. The first is treating a top ranking as a sure click. Ahrefs found position-one click-through on AI Overview keywords fell from 0.073 in December 2023 to 0.016 in December 2025. Similar keywords with no AI Overview also fell, from 0.076 to 0.039, so Ahrefs estimates the AI Overview effect at 58% against a modelled forecast. 6
The second is the featured snippet. Ahrefs found featured snippets on 5.53% of 1 million US desktop results pages in June 2025, down from 15.41% in January, while AI Overviews rose from 3.93% to 27.43%. Ahrefs says correlation is not causation, but calls it very likely that AI Overviews have superseded snippets. 10
The third is content that exists only to give a quick fact. If the answer fits in one sentence, an AI answer can give it without a visit. That is our reasoning, and the click studies fit it, since the largest falls are on informational queries.
What did not die is the need for pages a buyer must visit, such as pricing, quotes, booking, proof and comparisons. We found no study that measures this directly, so treat it as a hypothesis to test on your own pages.
What has evolved instead?
Search now has two doors. People still use Google, and they also ask assistants. OpenAI's own paper says ChatGPT had 700 million weekly users sending 18 billion messages a week by July 2025. 12
Those assistants send few clicks. In Ahrefs' September 2026 benchmark of 115,254 sites, ChatGPT sent 0.34% of traffic and all AI assistants together sent 0.43%, while Google sent 23.96%. 11 The count is a floor, because some AI platforms strip referrer data and the visit lands in direct traffic. 14 See how much traffic ChatGPT sends.
The influence may be larger than the clicks. Ahrefs reports that more than one in five people who sign up for Ahrefs say they found it through ChatGPT or Claude. 14 That is self-reported, from one software company, so it does not show the same for a local business.
So the work widens. Pages must still rank, and they must also be easy to quote, so an AI answer can name you. See what AI SEO is and AI SEO vs traditional SEO.
What should a business do about it?
Keep the SEO foundations, add answer pages, and change what you measure. Do not cut search work because of headlines about falling clicks, and do not assume AI will send the clicks Google used to. Both moves rest on thin evidence.
Chalk Labs sells AI SEO, so we have a stake in this answer. The evidence above is why we say the work has changed rather than ended.
- Keep the technical basics: pages that can be crawled and indexed. Google says there are no extra requirements for its AI features. 2
- Open pages with the answer so an assistant can quote them. See how to write answer-first introductions.
- Publish pages that need a visit: pricing, quotes, booking, case evidence and comparisons.
- Track impressions, citations and enquiries, not clicks alone. Search Console has begun reporting impressions in generative AI features. 15
- Ask every new customer how they heard about you, and allow more than one answer.
If clicks fall, does search still pay?
It can, but it depends on what a customer is worth. The example below is illustrative and uses made-up business numbers. Replace them with your own in the calculator.
- Before: 2,000 visits a month, 1.5% enquire, 20% of enquiries buy, and a customer is worth $800.
- Enquiries: 2,000 x 0.015 = 30. Customers: 30 x 0.20 = 6. Revenue: 6 x $800 = $4,800.
- After a 30% fall: 1,400 visits, 21 enquiries, 4.2 customers, $3,360 in revenue.
- Lost revenue: $1,440 a month. With a $1,500 monthly cost, the channel still covers its cost, but the margin is thinner.
- At a customer value of $300, the same channel would lose money: 4.2 x $300 = $1,260 against $1,500.
- Made-up numbers to show the arithmetic. Replace them with your own.
- Whether this holds depends on your own margins; the figures are invented.
Frequently asked questions
Is SEO dead in 2026?
Will AI replace Google search?
Should I stop investing in SEO because of AI Overviews?
Not on this evidence. Marketers in HubSpot's 2026 survey still rank website, blog and SEO as the top ROI channel, although nearly 30% reported lower search traffic. Keep the technical basics, add pages buyers must visit, and measure citations and enquiries. 13
Is AI SEO different from SEO?
Mostly it is SEO with extra goals. Google says optimizing for generative AI search is still SEO and needs no special files. The extra work is writing pages an assistant can quote, earning mentions elsewhere, and measuring citations as well as clicks. 2
Which businesses are hit hardest by zero-click answers?
Publishers and sites that answer quick factual questions, so far. Chartbeat data show Google organic traffic to news sites fell by a third globally in a year. We found no comparable study for local services or industrial suppliers, so check your own Search Console data. 8
