AI SEO Myths vs Reality

The short answer

Most AI SEO myths fail when checked against primary sources. An llms.txt file showed no link to citations in a study of nearly 300,000 domains. Top-10 Google rank now predicts fewer than four in ten AI Overview citations. AI assistants send under 1% of traffic. Citations fade within weeks, and nobody can guarantee them. 1235

  • Ten popular claims, each rated Not supported or Partly true, with the evidence behind the rating.
  • Special AI files, markup and rewrites are not required, according to Google's own guidance.
  • Ranking well helps less than it used to for AI Overview citations, but it is not irrelevant.
  • AI traffic is small today, yet the visitors may be valuable. Both statements hold.
  • Be wary of any provider who promises citations. We do not guarantee them either.

Which AI SEO myths are false, and which are partly true?

Six of the ten myths below are not supported and four are partly true. The ratings reflect the sources we opened on 20 October 2026, and they can change as engines change.

These are the common AI SEO misconceptions, whether the work is called AEO, GEO or AI search optimization. The facts differ from the myths in useful ways. A myth here means a common claim, not a lie. Many started as a reasonable guess about how AI search might work. The question is whether the evidence now backs it.

Do you need llms.txt, special markup or AI-only files?

No. Google's guide to generative AI features says you do not need new machine-readable files, AI text files, markup or Markdown to appear in Google Search, and that Google Search ignores llms.txt. 1

Other engines might read the file, so the myth is not closed everywhere. SE Ranking analysed nearly 300,000 domains in October 2026. About 10% had an llms.txt file, and the statistical tests found no link between having one and being cited. 2 The authors call it an optional experiment.

No file can guarantee ChatGPT citations. Our view: if you want an llms.txt file, our free llms.txt generator takes two minutes. Do not pay for it as a growth plan, and read llms.txt versus robots.txt versus sitemap for what each file really does.

Should you chop content into tiny pieces or rewrite it for AI?

Not for Google. Its guide says there is no requirement to break content into tiny pieces, and you do not need to write in a special way just for generative AI search. 1

Writing clear sections that answer one question each is still good practice for readers. It is just not a trick. Google also warns that making separate pages for every phrasing of a question can break its scaled content abuse policy when the aim is to manipulate results. 1

The takeaway is to write helpful pages first. Our guide to answer-first intros shows the habit without the gimmicks.

Is AI search already your biggest traffic source, or has it killed clicks?

Neither is accurate. Across 115,254 sites in Ahrefs' September 2026 benchmark, all AI assistants together sent 0.43% of traffic, with ChatGPT at 0.34%. 5 Google's channel was 23.96% in the same data.

Clicks do fall when a summary shows up. Pew Research tracked 900 US adults in March 2025. Users clicked a normal result in 8% of visits with an AI summary and 15% without one. 6 Only 18% of searches produced a summary, though.

AI visitors may be worth more per visit. Ahrefs reports that about 6% of its AI visitors sign up for a free account, roughly four times its organic rate, but it is one company's data. 11 See is SEO dead and zero-click searches for the longer story.

Once an AI assistant cites you, do you stay cited?

No. Profound studied 883,000 pages across seven answer engines from September 2025 to September 2026. The median page lost half its citation share within 11 days of its peak. 8

About 22% of page-and-engine pairs were sustained, with half-lives of 27 to 29 days. Profound sells citation monitoring, so it has a commercial interest, and its metric is its own citation share, not traffic. 8

The practical lesson is to refresh important pages and keep earning mentions elsewhere. Our guide to refreshing old content for AI gives a simple routine.

Can you game AI answers, or buy a sure result?

You can nudge them briefly, but results are fragile and nobody can promise them. Ahrefs published 34 self-promotional pages across five of its own domains and tracked 9,886 AI answers. For a new, unknown event brand, 82% of new mentions came from the pages Ahrefs itself published. For the established Ahrefs brand, only 6% did. 9

Gains mostly did not last. About a quarter of citations appeared once and never returned. 9 Google adds that no one can guarantee a number-one ranking and that anyone promising first place is a reason to look elsewhere. 10

We do not guarantee citations or leads either. The honest offer is a method, a measurement plan and a clear report. Our risks and what not to do page covers the line between smart and spammy.

What should you do instead of chasing myths?

Spend effort where the sources agree. Make sure bots can read your pages, publish original and useful answers, build real mentions on other sites, and measure results monthly. Google calls the right target non-commodity content that readers find helpful and reliable. 1

Frequently asked questions

What is the biggest AI SEO myth?

The biggest is that a single file, tag or trick can make assistants cite you. Google says no special AI files or markup are needed. 1 SE Ranking found no link between llms.txt and citations across nearly 300,000 domains. 2 Useful pages and real mentions matter more.

Is traditional SEO still worth doing?

Yes. Google says optimising for generative AI search is still SEO. 1 Ranking overlap with AI citations has fallen, so SEO alone is not enough, but it remains the base.

Do backlinks matter for AI visibility?

They matter less than brand mentions, based on correlation. Ahrefs found branded web mentions and YouTube mentions correlated most strongly across 75,000 brands, and links only very weakly. 7 That is not proof of cause, so keep earning links that also help people find you.

How much traffic do AI assistants send?

Little today. Ahrefs found all AI assistants sent 0.43% of traffic across 115,254 sites in September 2026. 5 Your share may differ, so check your own analytics before deciding how much weight to give AI visits.

Can I trust AI SEO case studies?

Trust them as much as you trust the tester. Check who ran it, the sample size, whether the seller profits, and whether the result lasted. Profound's data shows most citations fade within weeks, so one screenshot proves little. 8
