AI SEO for B2B SaaS: How to Get Recommended by ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews

The short answer

A B2B SaaS company gets recommended when AI can find, check and repeat clear facts about its product. Publish plain-text pricing, feature and integration pages, then earn honest mentions on review sites and in third-party comparisons. Many software prompts compare options, so answer 'X vs Y' and 'best for' questions with dated evidence instead of slogans.

  • In a 2026 G2 survey, 51% of B2B decision-makers said they start software research with an AI chatbot more often than with Google. 1
  • 69% said a chatbot led them to a different vendor than they planned, and 33% bought from a vendor they had not heard of. 1
  • In Ahrefs' test of 20,000 US prompts, official sites took 63.4% of ChatGPT citations on factual questions but only 46.4% on comparison questions, so third-party sources matter. 4
  • Publish pricing, segment, feature, integration and comparison pages in plain HTML text, each with dates and stated limits.
  • Collect reviews under the FTC rule and each platform's policy: no fakes, no sentiment-linked rewards, no gating. 89
Why it matters in B2B SaaS
  • About half of surveyed software buyers start with an AI chatbot more often than Google, and most still use Google too 1.
  • Chatbots change shortlists: 69% said one led them to a different vendor, and 33% bought from a vendor they had not heard of 1.
  • Comparison prompts pull in outside sources: official sites got 46.4% of ChatGPT citations on comparisons against 63.4% on facts 4.

How it is worked out

  • Enquiries = visits × enquiry rate.
  • Customers = enquiries × close rate.
  • Revenue = customers × average customer value.
  • Revenue minus cost = revenue − monthly cost.
  • Return multiple = revenue ÷ monthly cost.
  • Visits to break even = monthly cost ÷ revenue per visit. Revenue per visit = enquiry rate × close rate × customer value.

What do software buyers ask AI when they build a shortlist?

They mostly ask for a category or a rival comparison. G2 split buyers' first prompts into five types: 33% category-based, 31% competitor-based, 22% requirements-based, 9% ecosystem-based and 6% budget-based 1. Your site should have a page for each type, in that order of priority.

Shortlists are being shaped inside these chats. G2 reports that 54% of respondents ranked AI chatbots as the top source influencing shortlists, ahead of software review sites at 43% 1. It also found that 69% said a chatbot led them to a different vendor than planned, and 33% bought from a vendor they had not heard of 1.

Read G2's numbers with care. G2 sells review, profile and AI visibility services, and its report does not say which sources the chatbots cited 1. Treat the figures as a signal about buyer behaviour, not proof that any one tactic works.

Ecosystem9%project software that connects to Slack and QuickBooksAn integrations page with one line per integration and a docs link
Budget6%project software under a set price per userA pricing page with plan limits written as plain text

What do AI engines look at when they choose a software product?

They lean on your own site for facts and on other sites for judgement. In an Ahrefs test of 20,000 US prompts, 63.4% of ChatGPT citations for factual questions went to official sites, but only 46.4% did for comparison questions 4. So you must publish the facts, and you do not control the comparisons.

Profound analysed 11.84 billion citations from April to July 2026 and found brand-owned sites supplied roughly 57% of citations across 29 industries 5. For SaaS and software, the median earned-media share (editorial and institutional sources) was 11.4% 5. The article gives no brand-owned figure for software, so read this as a hint that your own pages matter, not as a rule.

What searches does an AI run before it names a software product?

ChatGPT often answers without searching, and when it does search it runs only a few queries. Ahrefs found that 14.4% of 66.6 million free, logged-out ChatGPT responses contained fan-out queries (August and September 2026), averaging about 1.6 queries among those responses 4. 'Fan-out' means the extra searches an AI runs behind one prompt.

Those searches follow a pattern. In September, the most common added word was the year (22.9% of fan-out queries), followed by 'official' (13.1%), 'price' (8.9%) and 'best' (5.3%) 4. Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode may also use query fan-out, issuing several related searches across subtopics 3.

We did not observe a fan-out for the seed prompt below. The list is modelled on those published patterns. It shows the kind of searches to expect, not what any engine actually ran. You can test your own prompts with the Query Fan-Out Explorer, and what is query fan-out explains the idea.

Modelled searches behind one prompt (not observed)
  • Prompt: best project management software for a 50-person agency
  • Likely search 1: best project management software for agencies 2026
  • Likely search 2: project management software for agencies pricing per user
  • Likely search 3: [Rival A] vs [Rival B] for agencies
  • Likely search 4: [Your product] reviews
  • Likely search 5: [Your product] official pricing
  • What to publish: a segment page, a pricing page, two honest comparison pages, and a link to your review-site profile

What should a B2B SaaS company publish first?

Publish the pages that answer the five prompt types, starting with the ones that hold hard facts. Begin with pricing, because price is a common added word in AI searches 4 and a buyer cannot get your price from a review site you do not control. Then add a segment page, a feature page, an integrations page and one honest comparison for each main rival.

Keep key facts in plain HTML text. As of Vercel's late-2024 study, none of the crawlers it measured from OpenAI, Anthropic, Meta, ByteDance or Perplexity ran JavaScript, although Gemini and Apple's crawler did 11. A price table that appears only after a script runs may never reach ChatGPT's crawler. See how to make your site readable by ChatGPT and how to structure a pricing page for AI.

Do not write a page for every possible query variation. Google's July 2026 guide says doing that mainly to manipulate rankings or AI answers violates its scaled content abuse policy 7. It asks for non-commodity content instead: unique expert or experienced takes that go beyond common knowledge 7.

Pricing pagePlan names, price per user, billing terms and limitsA 'checked on' date and a link to your termsWhenever a plan changes

Comparison pageThe criteria, then a dated tableA source link for each rival fact and a row where you loseEvery quarter, or when a rival changes

How do you write comparison pages that AI cites and buyers trust?

Write them to help the buyer choose, including when the buyer should not choose you. In Ahrefs' study of 750 prompts, recently updated 'best X' lists were the most prominent page type in ChatGPT's sources 6. In 250 'best software' search results, 67.6% showed a list where the publisher ranked itself first 6.

The tactic can work. A self-promotional list appeared in more than a third of ChatGPT's software responses when its publisher was the one recommended 6. But the same article quotes critics who say ranking yourself first does not build trust, and Ahrefs says it keeps its own comparison posts rare and links to alternatives 6. Google adds that chasing inauthentic mentions is less helpful than it seems 7.

Our rule is to state the criteria first, rank honestly, disclose that you wrote the page and add a row where a rival wins. A buyer who sees that row trusts the other rows. Keep the page current too. Profound found the median page lost half its citation share within 11 days of its peak. Among pages that held their citations, comparison, listicle and review pages had a median half-life of 29 days, only a day or two longer than other page types, so plan to refresh all key pages 13. For the full method, read how to write comparison pages that get cited.

Skeleton of an honest comparison page
  • Title: [Your product] vs [Rival A] for 50-person agencies (checked 20 Oct 2026)
  • Answer first: Choose [Your product] if you need X and Y. Choose [Rival A] if you need Z.
  • Criteria: team size, client approvals, time tracking, integrations, price per user
  • Table: one row per criterion, one column per product, a source link in each cell
  • Row where we lose: [Rival A] has the deeper reporting add-on
  • Disclosure: Written by [Your company]. Prices taken from public pricing pages on the date above.
  • Corrections: send them to [email]. Last reviewed on the date above.

What rules apply to reviews, comparisons and claims?

Review sites feed buyer research, so how you collect reviews matters for trust and for the law. The US Federal Trade Commission's rule on fake and bought reviews took effect on 21 October 2024 8. It covers fake reviews, buying reviews tied to a required sentiment, and undisclosed insider reviews 8.

Incentives are allowed if nothing requires a particular sentiment 8. Asking only your happiest customers is not named in the rule, but the FTC says it could still break the FTC Act 8. G2 goes further: it caps incentives at $100, labels incentivised reviews, and removes reviews from sellers who solicit only positive ones 9.

G2 also bars employees of the product's company and of direct competitors from reviewing it 9. On your own site, Google says pages are ineligible for star ratings in search when the business controls the reviews about itself, including reviews shown through an embedded widget 10. So do not wrap your own testimonials in review markup hoping for stars.

How do you measure whether AI is sending software leads?

Use three cheap checks: a prompt log, a 'how did you hear about us' field and the reports in your search tools. Run five core prompts on two AI engines, three runs each, and save the answers, because wording changes from run to run. Mark each run as named, cited or absent. Also log which review sites the AI cites for your category, since those are the profiles to keep accurate.

Google now reports AI features in two places. Search Console's Performance report includes AI Overview and AI Mode traffic under the Web search type 3, and its generative AI performance report shows impressions by page, country, date and device, and its help page mentions no click data 12. Bing's AI Performance report, in public preview since 10 February 2026, shows how often your pages are cited in Copilot and Bing AI summaries 15.

Do not expect last-click analytics to credit AI. Gartner found buyers used an average of seven sources 2, so an AI answer may shape a shortlist long before the visit. A free-text 'How did you hear about us?' field on the demo form can capture what analytics misses. See how to set up self-reported attribution and how to build a prompt list for tracking.

What have Chalk Labs and Rahil Jain done in B2B SaaS, and what have they not?

Chalk Labs has not published results in B2B SaaS. What transfers is the method: query research, answer pages, technical readiness and measurement. Chalk Labs reports using it for Meru Trophy, a custom trophy shop in Bengaluru, and for the personal-brand site shilikajain.com 14.

Those two cases are a local shop and a personal site, not software companies. Their figures are Google search numbers, not counts of AI citations 14. A software buying journey is longer and uses more sources, so do not assume the same timing or results.

Rahil Jain runs Chalk Labs' AI SEO programme. Chalk Labs sells this service, so we have a commercial interest. A SaaS team with one writer and one developer can do most steps above unaided, and in-house vs agency sets out the trade-offs.

Your first 90 days

Days 1-30

  • Write ten buyer prompts across the five types and run each on two AI engines, three times.
  • Check that pricing, features and integrations sit in plain HTML text and that AI crawlers are allowed in.
  • Add 'How did you hear about us?' as a free-text field on every demo and trial form.
  • List the facts you must keep current, with an owner for each.

Days 31-60

  • Publish or rewrite the pricing page, one segment page and the integrations page.
  • Publish two honest comparison pages for your most-named rivals.
  • Send one identical review invitation to all customers, with no reward tied to a score.

Days 61-90

  • Add feature pages that state limits, and a security page with certification scope and dates.
  • Rerun the prompt log and compare it with day one.
  • Review Search Console's generative AI report and Bing's AI Performance report.
  • Decide which pages to refresh monthly and which each quarter.

The first pages to publish

  1. Pricing page in plain text. 'Price' appeared in 8.9% of ChatGPT fan-out queries in September 2026 4.
  2. A segment page for each buyer type. Category prompts are the largest group of first prompts at 33% 1.
  3. Feature pages that state limits. Requirements-based prompts make up 22% of first prompts 1.
  4. Integrations page, one line per integration. Ecosystem prompts make up 9% of first prompts, and each line can link to docs 1.
  5. One honest comparison for each main rival. Competitor prompts are 31% of first prompts 1, and comparisons lean on outside sources 4.
  6. Security and trust page. Buyers check shortlists before they buy, so state certifications, scope and dates they can verify.
  7. A guide to choosing the category. It answers requirements-led questions and earns links from neutral sources.
  8. A public changelog and 'last reviewed' dates. Pages lose citation share fast, so visible freshness helps both buyers and crawlers 13.

Trust signals and risks

What AI looks for

  • Public pricing and plan limits in plain text, with a 'checked on' date.
  • Honest, recent reviews on the sites buyers use, collected under each platform's rules 9.
  • Named integrations, each with a working docs page.
  • A security page that states the scope and date of each certification.
  • Fair comparison pages that include a row where a rival wins.
  • Real author names and roles on technical and comparison pages.

What can go wrong

  • Fake, gated or reward-for-score reviews, which the FTC rule and G2's policy both target 89.
  • Mass-produced 'alternatives' pages that Google may treat as scaled content abuse 7.
  • Self-ranked 'best' lists that critics say read as ads and cost trust 6.
  • Price and feature facts that go stale while AI keeps repeating them.
  • Review markup on your own testimonials, which Google ignores for star ratings 10.

Frequently asked questions

Does ChatGPT recommend B2B SaaS products?

Yes, buyers ask it for software and it names products, but nobody can promise it will name yours. In G2's 2026 survey, 69% of buyers said a chatbot led them to a different vendor than they planned 1. Answers vary by run and by engine, so track repeated runs. We do not guarantee placement.

Do I need G2 reviews to show up in AI answers?

Not strictly, but review sites matter to buyers. In G2's survey, 45% said review-site citations were the most confidence-inspiring signal in an AI answer 1. G2 sells these services, so weigh that. Collect honest reviews under the platform's rules 9 and keep your own site's facts correct.

Should I publish 'best' lists that rank my own product first?

You can, but say so openly. Ahrefs found 67.6% of 250 'best software' search results showed lists where the publisher ranked itself first, and critics say this hurts trust 6. State your criteria, name the author's company, and include a row where a rival wins.

Does schema markup help a SaaS site get cited by AI?

Google says structured data is not required for generative AI search and that no special markup is needed 7. Use markup that matches visible content, such as Organization details, but do not expect it to decide recommendations. Clear plain-text pages matter more.

How long until a SaaS company sees leads from AI search?

We cannot give a reliable figure. Public timing data for software is thin, and Chalk Labs has not published SaaS results. Review progress every month, judge after at least a full quarter, and treat early movement in your prompt log as a signal, not proof.

Is AI search replacing Google for software research?

Not yet. In G2's survey, 51% start with a chatbot more often than with Google, yet 80% still use Google somewhere in the journey 1. Plan for both, because the same pages serve Google, ChatGPT and buyers who read them directly.
