AI SEO for Schools and Universities
Schools and universities get recommended by ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews when AI can find clear, checkable facts: programmes, fees, entry rules, deadlines, accreditation and outcomes. Publish one plain admissions page for each question families ask, keep it current, and match the facts on third-party listings. No special markup is needed to appear. The page must be indexed and eligible for a snippet. 1
- Google says there are no extra technical requirements for AI Overviews: a page must be indexed and snippet-eligible. 1
- Families compare on facts: fees, curriculum, results, deadlines. Publish them on pages dedicated to one question each.
- Ranking sites and official listings are outside your control, so keep your own facts identical everywhere.
- Student photos and testimonials raise privacy duties. In the US, FERPA covers education records. 8
- We have no published results in education. What transfers is the method, proven on local commerce and a personal brand. 11
How do parents and students use AI to choose a school?
We found no reliable study of how parents or applicants use ChatGPT or AI Overviews to pick a school or university. Evidence here is thin, so treat claims that AI now drives admissions with caution.
What we can say comes from general search behaviour. In Pew's analysis of 900 US adults in March 2025, 18% of Google searches produced an AI summary. 2 People clicked a traditional result in 8% of visits with a summary against 15% without one. 2 If a family reads the summary and stops, your brand must be in the summary or the shortlist never reaches you.
A school choice is a long, high-stakes decision. Families usually ask several questions over weeks, so each page you publish should answer one question completely.
- Families shortlist from a few names, and an AI summary can narrow the list before they visit any site. 2
- Fees, entry rules and deadlines are facts an assistant can quote only if you publish them clearly. 1
- Public datasets and listings are cross-checked, so inconsistent facts cost trust. 5
- No study we found measures AI use in school choice, so measure your own enquiries.
What do AI engines check before naming a school?
They look for facts they can verify across sources. Google says a page needs to be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet, and nothing more technical. 1 So the work is content and consistency, not tricks.
Google's guidance asks whether authorship is clear and whether content shows first-hand knowledge. 3 For a school, first-hand means your own prospectus data, your own staff names, your own exam results and your own campus photos. A generic article about 'choosing a school' shows none of that.
Consistency matters because facts get cross-checked. If your fees page says one amount and a directory says another, an assistant has no way to know which is current. Pick one source of truth and copy it everywhere.
| Fact | Publish on your site | Where it is checked elsewhere |
|---|---|---|
| Curriculum and programmes | A page per programme with ages and entry rules | The IB school search, exam board listings |
| Fees and extras | A dated fee table with what is included | Directories, forums, news |
| Accreditation | Name, number and a link to the register | The accreditor's own register |
| Outcomes | Results by year, with the cohort size | Government data, ranking sites |
| Deadlines | A dated admissions calendar | Your own pages only, so keep them current |
Which questions do families ask, and what page answers each?
Start from the seed question and build outward. A prompt such as 'best international school in Singapore for IB programme' hides several smaller questions: which schools teach the IB, how much they cost, how their results compare and how admission works.
In a study of 1.4 million ChatGPT prompts, Ahrefs found that cited pages had titles closer to the prompt than uncited ones: 0.602 against 0.484 on its similarity scale. 9 That is a correlation, not a rule. It does suggest a page title should state the question it answers.
The table in the buyer prompts section below lists six such questions with the page to build for each.
How should a school describe a programme such as the IB?
State what you are authorised to teach and let readers verify it. The IB has four programmes: Primary Years, Middle Years, Diploma and Career-related. 4 Schools must be authorised by the IB to teach them. 4 Check the age range for each on the IB's own programmes page before you print it.
Write one page for each programme you offer. Give the age range, entry requirements, subjects, class sizes and the latest results you can document. Link to the official school listing so a reader, or an assistant, can confirm your status.
Do not describe yourself as an IB school if you are only a candidate. Say 'candidate school' in plain words. Overstated credentials are the fastest way to lose trust, and Google treats invented credentials as deception. 3
Do rankings and government data decide who gets named?
They shape the evidence, but you cannot buy a place in them. In the US, the Department of Education publishes College Scorecard data on costs, student aid, completion, debt and earnings, updated 15 October 2026. 5 Assistants and journalists draw on public data like this, so check your own entry for errors.
Treat each external listing as a fact sheet to audit twice a year. Compare name, address, programmes, fees and accreditation against your site. Where a listing is wrong, use its correction route and keep a log.
Add structured data that matches the visible page. Schema.org has types for School, CollegeOrUniversity and others under EducationalOrganization. 6 Google recommends Organization markup with name, url, logo and sameAs links, and it says no property is required. 7 Google also says structured data must match visible text. 1
What should a school publish first?
Publish the admissions answer page first. It should cover who can apply, which programmes, the fee table, the calendar and how to start. Put a two-sentence answer at the top, then the detail.
Next, add one page per programme, one for fees, one for results with cohort sizes, and one for 'how we compare to other schools' written fairly. Show the date each page was updated, as Google advises, and keep visible and markup dates equal. 10
Our guide on finding the questions people ask ChatGPT shows how to build the list. The expert author page guide helps you credit the head of admissions or the faculty who wrote each page.
- An admissions page with a dated calendar and a plain-words answer on top.
- One programme page per programme, with ages and entry rules.
- A fees page with a dated table.
- A results page with the cohort size beside each figure.
- A fair comparison page that names alternatives and says who each suits.
What privacy and claims rules apply to school marketing?
Student information needs care. In the US, FERPA gives parents rights over their children's education records, and those rights pass to students at 18 or on entering a college. 8 Before you publish a named student story, photo or result, get written consent and check your local rules.
We did not retrieve official text for Singapore or other countries' privacy and advertising rules, so this guide does not summarise them. Check your national data protection authority and education regulator before publishing testimonials.
Back every outcome claim with data and a date. A pass rate or placement figure with no cohort size is a marketing line, not evidence. If a statistic is unfavourable this year, publish it with context rather than removing the page.
How do you measure whether it is working?
Track the admissions cycle: save six family prompts, run each three times on two AI engines each month, and record whether your school is named and with what facts. Add Search Console, which reports AI feature traffic under the Web search type. 1
Add a 'How did you hear about us?' field to enquiry forms, with a choice for AI assistants, and report enquiries by intake. Admission cycles run once a year, so judge in cycles, not weeks. We do not guarantee citations or enrolments.
What have Chalk Labs and Rahil Jain done in education?
We have not published results in this field. Do not read this guide as proof of enrolment gains.
What transfers is the method: query research, answer pages, technical readiness and measurement. It was proven on a local trophy shop in Bengaluru, which grew to 27,300 Google clicks in 16 months, and on a new personal site that ranked first for one narrow phrase within a month. 11 Both are Chalk Labs' own work. A school is a different buyer and a different regulator, so expect to adapt the method.

Chalk Labs reports them from Google Search Console data. We cannot publish the raw console. The shilikajain.com site belongs to Shilika Jain, a Chalk Labs co-founder, so treat it as a demonstration on our own network and not as an independent client result. Meru Trophy is a client of Chalk Labs.
Frequently asked questions
Can a school pay to be recommended by ChatGPT?
No. As of October 2026 we found no paid placement route for organic answers. Assistants draw on pages and sources they can read, so the practical route is clear, consistent, dated facts on your own site, plus accurate listings elsewhere. Paid ads are separate and are labelled as ads.
Do we need special schema for AI Overviews?
No. Google says there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews beyond being indexed and snippet-eligible, and no special markup is required. Structured data is still useful if it matches the visible text on the page. 1
How often should admissions pages be updated?
Update whenever a fee, deadline or entry rule changes, and review everything at least once per admissions cycle. Show the real update date on the page. Google asks that dates describe the actual publication or update, not other events. 10
Can we publish student testimonials?
Yes, with written consent and care. In the US, FERPA gives parents and eligible students control over education records. 8 Check your national privacy law, avoid naming minors, and never invent or edit a quote to sound better.
How long before we see results?
Nobody can say for your school, and we do not guarantee any result. Our own cases are search-led and measured in months. Admissions also run in annual cycles, so judge progress over a full cycle using the monthly prompt log.
