AI SEO for Personal Brands and Independent Consultants
A consultant gets recommended by ChatGPT or Google AI Overviews when AI can tell exactly who they are, what they do and who vouches for them. Publish one clear bio, one page per service with real scope, case notes you have consent to share, and consistent profiles elsewhere. Keep the claims you can prove and drop the rest. No special markup is required. 1
- Google needs only an indexed, snippet-eligible page for AI features; it asks for no special optimisation. 1
- For a person, trust is built from consistent facts, clear authorship and outside mentions. 2
- Ahrefs found branded web mentions correlated with AI visibility at 0.664 for ChatGPT, though correlation is not causation. 5
- Testimonials on your own site can create legal duties if they are false. 6
- Our own example, shilikajain.com, is a co-founder's site and a narrow niche, so treat it as modest evidence. 8
Why does AI search matter for a solo consultant?
Buyers vet a person before they hire one. A founder who wants a fractional PR manager may ask an assistant for names (a plausible pattern, not a measured one) and then check who is credible. If your name never appears in that answer, you may never reach the shortlist.
Clicks are also harder to win. In Pew's analysis of 900 US adults in March 2025, people clicked a traditional result in 8% of visits with an AI summary and 15% without one. 7 Only 1% clicked a link inside the summary. 7
We found no study measuring how often buyers hire consultants after asking an AI assistant. The mechanism is plausible, and the evidence is thin, so measure your own enquiries.
- Buyers vet a person's credibility before hiring, and AI summaries can shape the shortlist. 7
- Trust is the strongest Google quality aspect, and a person must prove it with consistent facts. 2
- Outside mentions correlate with AI visibility, so being named elsewhere helps. 5
- One extra enquiry matters a lot to a solo consultant.
What do AI engines check about a person before naming them?
They look for a consistent identity and proof. Google's people-first guidance asks whether it is clear who wrote the content, how it was made and why it exists. 2 It says trust is the most important part of E-E-A-T, and it calls fabricated creator profiles and false credentials deception. 2
Outside mentions seem to matter too. In an Ahrefs study of 75,000 brands, branded web mentions correlated with AI visibility at 0.664 for ChatGPT, 0.709 for AI Mode and 0.656 for AI Overviews. 5 Ahrefs states that correlation is not causation. 5 It does fit a simple idea: being named by others is a signal that you exist.
The most-cited sources differ by engine. Semrush found Google AI Mode cited LinkedIn in nearly 15% of its responses over 13 weeks. 4 A complete LinkedIn profile that matches your site is therefore worth the hour it takes.
| Fact | Where to state it | Why it helps |
|---|---|---|
| Full name and the title you use | Site header, bio, LinkedIn, podcast guest pages | Lets AI join the dots into one entity |
| One-sentence description | Home page, About, LinkedIn headline | A quotable, consistent answer |
| Services and who they suit | One page per service | Matches the 'best for' part of a buyer prompt |
| Credentials you can document | About page with links to proof | Backs claims with checkable evidence 2 |
| Contact and booking route | Contact page and footer | Gives a clear next step |
Which pages should a consultant publish first?
Start with the page that answers the buyer prompt for your niche: who you help, what you do, how you work, what it costs and how to start. Put a two-sentence answer on top, then detail.
Add one page for each service, a short page for each type of client you serve, and a plain 'how I work' page. Write them in the first person, because a consultant's judgment is the product.
Use an author page that Google can understand. Its ProfilePage markup suits an 'About me' page and needs a mainEntity of type Person with a name. 3 Our guide on the expert author page has a template, and the Organization and Person schema guide covers the code.
- A home page that states who you help and what you do in two sentences.
- A service page per offer, with scope, who it suits and who it does not.
- An About page with a real biography and links to proof. 2
- A pricing or 'how engagements start' page.
- Case notes you have consent to share, with the problem, the work and the result.
How do you show proof without breaking the rules?
Show results you can document and say what you did. A claim with a name, a date and a source beats a superlative. If a client will not be named, describe the work and leave the name out.
Testimonials carry legal weight. The FTC says a business that puts testimonials on its own site is disseminating them and can be liable if they are fake or false. 6 Its rule covers fake or false reviews, reviews bought or incentivised to express a particular sentiment, insider reviews without disclosure, and review suppression. 6 Get written permission for every quote and never edit one to say more than the client said.
Do not borrow results. If you ran a project as part of an agency or team, say your role. Google treats false credentials as deception. 2
What happened when Chalk Labs built a consultant's site for search?
Chalk Labs built shilikajain.com, a personal site for a PR consultant, to be readable by search and AI. Chalk Labs reports that it ranked first for 'Fractional PR manager crypto' within a month of launch and reached 8.5k impressions in three months. 8 It started with no search footprint. 8
Read this result with care. The site belongs to a Chalk Labs co-founder, so the result is self-reported and not independently audited. The phrase is a narrow niche, and the case study gives no search volume or measurement date. 8 It is evidence that the method works for a small, specific query, not a promise for a crowded one.
It is also close to this page's own seed, the prompt 'best fractional PR manager for a crypto startup'. We have a commercial interest in AI SEO work, so weigh our view accordingly.
Do podcasts, video and LinkedIn posts help?
They can, because they create the outside mentions and profiles AI cross-checks. Ahrefs reported YouTube mentions as the strongest correlation with AI visibility in its study, as a correlation only. 5 See our coaches and creators guide for the figure.
Choose channels where your buyers already look. For a crypto PR consultant, that may be podcasts and X; for a finance coach, it may be YouTube. Always link back to your own pages and keep your name and description identical.
Take care with endorsements. If you are paid or given products to say something, disclose it clearly. Our guide on optimising LinkedIn for AI visibility covers the profile steps.
How do you measure it as one person?
Keep a log of six buyer prompts for your niche. Run each three times on two AI engines each month and record whether your name appears, in what position and with what description. Add Search Console, which reports AI feature clicks in the Web search type. 1
Add 'How did you hear about me?' to your contact form with an AI assistant option. A consultant gets few leads, so one extra enquiry matters. We do not guarantee citations or leads, and results vary by niche.
What has Chalk Labs done for personal brands?
Chalk Labs has done this kind of work: shilikajain.com is the example above, and we run the same method on our own site. shilikajain.com belongs to Shilika Jain, a Chalk Labs co-founder. Rahil Jain's role is leading Chalk Labs' AI SEO programme, which supplies the method. The honest limits are that it is one personal-brand case, self-reported, in a narrow niche.
If you are choosing help, compare several options and ask for evidence you can check. Our guide to hiring an AI SEO expert lists neutral criteria.

The first pages to publish
- Who I help and how. The answer page for the main buyer prompt.
- About me, with proof. Authorship and credentials Google asks for.
- Fractional PR for crypto startups. A service page for one niche with scope and fit.

What AI looks for
Why Rahil Jain for Personal brands and independent consultants?
Direct experience
Chalk Labs has done work in this field and can show it.
Chalk Labs has done this kind of work for a personal brand: it built shilikajain.com, the site of co-founder Shilika Jain, for SEO, AEO and GEO. The result is self-reported and in a narrow niche, so treat it as modest evidence. We also run the method on Chalk Labs' own site.
Rahil Jain
Rahil Jain is an AI SEO (answer engine and generative engine optimisation) consultant and co-founder of Chalk Labs.
Results we can show
These are Chalk Labs' own search results. They are not a forecast for your site: results depend on your market, competition and starting point.
How to read these numbers
Chalk Labs reports them from Google Search Console data. We cannot publish the raw console. The shilikajain.com site belongs to Shilika Jain, a Chalk Labs co-founder, so treat it as a demonstration on our own network and not as an independent client result. Meru Trophy is a client of Chalk Labs.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a personal website to be recommended by ChatGPT?
We think so: a site you control gives AI a stable, citable source for your bio, services and proof. We have no study that proves it. Google says a page needs only to be indexed and snippet-eligible to appear in its AI features. 1 Profiles on other sites then back up the same facts.
Does Person schema help me appear in AI answers?
Can I use client names and results?
Only with permission. Describe the work and the result you can document, and leave the name out if the client prefers. Testimonials on your own site can create liability if they are false. 6 Never present a team's work as solely yours.
Is LinkedIn enough on its own?
No, but it matters. Semrush found Google AI Mode cited LinkedIn in nearly 15% of responses over its 13-week study. 4 Your own site still gives you full control of the detail, so keep both and make the facts identical.
How long does it take?
It depends on the niche, and we do not guarantee any ranking or citation. Chalk Labs reports its personal-brand case reached the top result for a narrow phrase within a month. 8 Our larger local case took 16 months, so plan in months.
