AI SEO in Indonesia: How to Get Recommended by ChatGPT and Google AI
To be recommended by ChatGPT and Google AI search in Indonesia, publish answer-first pages in Bahasa Indonesia, with English only for foreign buyers. Make them fast on phones, let OAI-SearchBot and Googlebot read them, keep your business details identical on your site and listings, and follow the Personal Data Protection Law on every form and message.
- Indonesia had 230 million internet users at the end of 2025, and 78.2% of them used social media.
- Microsoft puts Indonesian generative AI use at 14.8% of people aged 15 to 64 in June 2026, below the 18.8% world figure.
- Google's e-Conomy SEA report says Indonesian AI-featured apps grew revenue 127%, the fastest in the region.
- The PDP Law's two-year transition ended on 17 October 2024, but the dedicated regulator was still being set up.
- Chalk Labs has no published Indonesian result. Its only regional proof is Meru Trophy in Bengaluru, India.
How do people in Indonesia find businesses with search and AI?
They go online on phones and spend a lot of that time on social platforms, so search is one of several discovery routes. DataReportal counted 230 million internet users at the end of 2025, which is 80.5% of the population, and 331 million mobile connections 2. About 55.8 million people were still offline, and 78.2% of internet users used at least one social media platform 2.
Google supplied 92.26% of search referrals in September 2026. Bing held 3.05%, DuckDuckGo 2.21% and Yahoo 1.74% 1.
Microsoft's AI Economy Institute estimates that 14.8% of Indonesians aged 15 to 64 had used a generative AI product by June 2026, up from 14.1% in March, against 18.8% worldwide 3. Use is below the world average on this measure, in a population of about 286 million 23.
Market snapshot: Indonesia
| Internet users (end of 2025) | 230 million, 80.5% of the population2 |
| Mobile connections (2025) | 331 million, 116% of the population2 |
| Social media use among internet users (October 2025) | 78.2%2 |
| Google share of search referrals (September 2026) | 92.26%; Bing 3.05%; DuckDuckGo 2.21%1 |
| Generative AI use, ages 15 to 64 (June 2026) | 14.8%, up from 14.1% in March; world 18.8%3 |
| Digital economy (2025 estimate) | About US$99 billion GMV; e-commerce about US$71 billion4 |
| Video-commerce sellers | 800,000, up 75% in a year; 2.6 billion transactions4 |

Microsoft estimates 14.8% of Indonesians aged 15 to 64 used generative AI by June 2026, against 18.8% worldwide 3. Google's e-Conomy report says AI-featured apps grew revenue 127% in the first half of 2025, the fastest in the region 4.
Why are commerce and video central to Indonesian search?
Because marketplaces and video commerce carry a large share of Indonesian buying. Google, Temasek and Bain's e-Conomy SEA 2025 report values Indonesia's digital economy at about US$99 billion in 2025, with e-commerce at about US$71 billion 4. The number of sellers using video grew 75% in a year to 800,000, and annual video-commerce transactions rose 90% to 2.6 billion 4.
The same report says AI-featured apps in Indonesia grew revenue 127% in the first half of 2025, the fastest in the region, and that 94% of Indonesian respondents were willing to share data access with AI agents 4. Saving time on research and comparisons was the top reason to use or pay for AI features, at 51% 4. The survey covered 7,200 consumers across ASEAN-10 and does not state the Indonesian sub-sample, so read these as signals 4.
For a seller, the lesson is to be present where buyers decide. Keep your own site as the source of truth, with prices, specifications and policies in plain text, because AI tools and marketplaces both read from sources like it.
Should your pages be in Bahasa Indonesia, English or regional languages?
Write in Bahasa Indonesia first, and add English only for foreign buyers, such as tourism, property and export. Indonesian is the official language and, according to the 2020 census figure quoted by Wikipedia, over 97% of Indonesians are fluent in it 5. The same article reports more than 700 living languages, with Javanese the largest regional one at about 32% 5.
We found no data on how often Indonesians search in regional languages. Start with one strong Indonesian page and add regional pages only if your own search data shows demand. Google's AI Overviews list includes Indonesia and Indonesian among its supported locations and languages, though the page does not map languages to countries 6. Give English pages their own URL, link the versions with hreflang, and make each page point to the other or Google ignores the tags 8.
| Buyer writes | Example | What to publish |
|---|---|---|
| Formal Indonesian | rekomendasi klinik gigi terbaik di Jakarta Selatan | A Bahasa Indonesia page with the answer in the first 40 to 75 words |
| Casual Indonesian | dokter gigi murah dekat Kemang | The same page, using the everyday words and the neighbourhood name in the text |
| English | best dental clinic in South Jakarta | An English page only if foreign residents or visitors are a real share of buyers |
| Mixed | klinik gigi best di Jaksel | No page needed. Use the short place name Jaksel next to the full name |
What does mobile-first mean for your site?
It means the phone version is your site. With 331 million mobile connections against 230 million internet users, most people reach you on a phone, and some on slow connections 2. Test your main pages on a mid-range Android phone over a weak network.
Put the answer, price range and contact button above the fold. Keep images light, serve text as real text, and avoid pop-ups that cover the answer. Some AI crawlers read only the raw HTML, so key text that appears only after scripts run may be missed. The Crawler Checker shows what a bot sees. Our guide to making a site readable by ChatGPT explains the fix.
What do Google AI Overviews and ChatGPT need from an Indonesian site?
Neither needs a trick, only pages they can fetch and quote on a mobile connection. Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode need nothing beyond indexing and snippet eligibility, and structured data must agree with the visible text 7.
ChatGPT search relies on OpenAI's OAI-SearchBot. OpenAI recommends allowing it, says opted-out sites are left out of answers, and notes a change takes about a day 9. The free AI Crawler Checker tests your robots.txt, and how to optimise a local business for AI search covers listings.
What does Indonesia's PDP Law mean for your pages?
Treat every form, tracking tool and mailing list as personal-data processing under Law No. 27 of 2022 (the PDP Law). It has applied since 17 October 2022, and the two-year transition ended on 17 October 2024, so full compliance is expected 10. The law is largely modelled on the EU's GDPR 10.
The dedicated PDP Agency had not been formed when DLA Piper last updated its page. Its creation was targeted for 2026, so check whether it is now operating. Until then the communications ministry KOMDIGI oversees data processed through electronic systems 10. Administrative fines can reach 2% of annual income or revenue, to be imposed by the PDP Agency once it operates, and unlawful collection of data carries up to five years in prison or a fine of IDR 200 million 10. Corporate fines can reach ten times the individual maximum 10.
The law does not specifically address e-marketing, so you still need a lawful basis, such as consent, before you message people 10. Foreign providers offering services in Indonesia may also need KOMDIGI registration 10. This page is not legal advice. This summary comes from a law-firm source, not the official text, so ask an Indonesian lawyer.
How does Indonesia differ from the worldwide picture?
Indonesian buyers are mobile, social and video-led, and AI use is still below the world average. So for most businesses the best 2026 return comes from strong Indonesian pages that Google already ranks, plus consistent facts across marketplaces and social profiles. Compared with the Malaysia page, the market is much larger and more fragmented by region.
Compared with the Singapore page, where English dominates, language quality is the main lever here. Read how to write pages for several languages before you add any.
What has Chalk Labs actually done in Indonesia?
No Indonesian work that we can show. Chalk Labs has published no client case here, and nothing on this page implies one. The only regional result we have published is Meru Trophy, a Bengaluru trophy shop that reached 27,300 Google clicks and 2.3 million impressions in 16 months 11.
The Meru result comes from a single-city shop in India. Indonesia is a marketplace and video-led market, so a search-only result would not transfer, and we have not measured marketplace effects. We do not guarantee rankings or citations.
Where should you start this month?
Begin with phone speed and consistent facts, then publish five Indonesian answer pages and measure. A single four-week loop is enough to learn from.
- Week 1: confirm robots.txt allows OAI-SearchBot and Googlebot, and test your top pages on a mid-range Android phone.
- Week 2: make your business name, address, phone and hours identical on your site, Google Business Profile and marketplace pages.
- Week 3: publish five Bahasa Indonesia pages: a price list in rupiah, a service page, a page matching your marketplace specifications, a delivery and returns page, and a privacy notice page. The answer block checker tests each opening.
- Week 4: add a privacy notice in Indonesian to every form, run ten buyer prompts in ChatGPT and Google, and note the date, brands named and domains cited.
- Afterwards, use the Countries tab of Search Console's Performance report to see Indonesian clicks 12, and ask each new lead how they found you.
Rules and platforms that shape results
Rules to know
- Personal Data Protection Law (Law No. 27 of 2022). Applied since 17 October 2022. Transition ended 17 October 2024. KOMDIGI oversees electronic data while the PDP Agency is set up. Fines up to 2% of annual revenue, and criminal penalties up to five years for unlawful collection. Marketing needs a lawful basis such as consent.10
- Halal and sector claims. Halal claims and logos are regulated in Indonesia. Use only a certificate you hold and confirm the current rules with your certifying body. Not independently verified against the official text.
Platforms that matter here
- Google Search, Google Maps and Google Business Profile
- ChatGPT search (reads sites through OAI-SearchBot)
- Google AI Overviews and AI Mode
- E-commerce marketplaces where your products are listed
- Video and live-selling platforms for retail
- Social profiles and chat apps your buyers already use
What works in Indonesia
- Write in everyday Bahasa Indonesia, using the place names and short forms locals type.
- Make pages light and fast for mid-range Android phones on slow networks.
- Keep prices, specifications and policies as plain text on your own site, matching your marketplace listings.
- Add English pages only for foreign visitors, property buyers or export customers.
- Add a privacy notice in Indonesian to every form.
Mistakes to avoid
- Putting key information only in images or videos, which crawlers cannot read.
- Machine-translating pages without a native Indonesian reader checking them.
- Letting marketplace prices and your own site prices drift apart.
- Messaging people from a bought list without a lawful basis under the PDP Law.
- Building many thin regional-language pages instead of one strong Indonesian page.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need English pages to appear in AI answers in Indonesia?
Only if foreign buyers matter to you, as in tourism, property or export. Over 97% of Indonesians are fluent in Indonesian according to the 2020 census figure Wikipedia quotes 5, so Bahasa Indonesia pages are the default.
Is AI search big in Indonesia yet?
Does the PDP Law apply to my small business?
It applies to personal data you collect, such as a contact form or mailing list. The transition ended on 17 October 2024 10. Add a privacy notice, keep consent records, and ask an Indonesian lawyer about your case.
Should I focus on marketplaces or my own website?
Use both. Marketplaces and video commerce carry a large share of Indonesian buying 4, but your own site is where you control the facts that AI tools quote. Keep prices and policies the same in both places.
Has Chalk Labs worked in Indonesia?
We have no published Indonesian results. Our only regional proof is Meru Trophy in Bengaluru, and we would show you a free proposal first so you can judge the plan.
