AI SEO in Kenya: How to Get Recommended by ChatGPT and Google AI Search

The short answer

A business in Kenya gets recommended by ChatGPT and Google AI search by publishing clear English answer pages, with a Swahili version where customers use it, stating prices in shillings and accepted payments such as M-Pesa, and proving who you are. Google needs no AI-specific markup 9. Kenya's Data Protection Act 2019 governs lead forms 4.

  • English and Swahili are both official languages, and Swahili is the national language, so decide page language by customer, not by habit.
  • Google held 96.87% of search referrals in September 2026, so classic Google basics come first.
  • About 23.4 million Kenyans were online in late 2025, only 40.5% of the population, but 78.5% of them used social media.
  • Generative AI use among working-age Kenyans was 8.9% in June 2026, well below the 18.8% world figure.
  • Smaller firms with under KES 5 million turnover and fewer than 10 staff are exempt from data-controller registration, but many sectors, including direct marketing, are not.

How big is the Kenyan online audience?

It is growing quickly but is still under half the population. DataReportal counted 23.4 million internet users in Kenya in October 2025, a penetration of 40.5%, up 9.9% in a year. About 34.4 million people were offline 2. The population was 57.8 million 2.

Among people who are online, social media is near universal. Social media user identities were 18.4 million, and 78.5% of internet users used at least one platform 2. Cellular connections reached 77.5 million, equal to 134% of the population, and DataReportal warns that its broadband share should not be read as a measure of mobile internet use 2.

The takeaway: Kenyans who find you online are mostly on phones and already comfortable with social platforms. Your Google Business Profile and a social presence both matter.

Microsoft estimates that 8.9% of working-age Kenyans used a generative AI product in June 2026, against 18.8% worldwide 3. We found no verified figure for ChatGPT or Google AI Mode use by Kenyan buyers.

Build local prompts for Kenya

Pick a business type and a place. Copy the prompts, then ask them in the AI assistants your buyers use and see who gets named.

Your 4 prompts

  • best dentist in Nairobi
  • dentist in Nairobi price in KES
  • dentist near Nairobi accepts M-Pesa
  • dentist Nairobi bei nafuu

Commercial prompts are mostly English, often with 'price in KES' or 'M-Pesa'. The Swahili pattern uses 'bei nafuu' (affordable price) and is modelled, not observed; test it with a Swahili speaker before building pages around it.

How many Kenyans use AI assistants?

Fewer than one in ten working-age Kenyans used a generative AI product in mid-2026. Microsoft's AI Economy Institute put Kenya at 8.9% in June 2026, up from 8.7% in the first quarter, against 18.8% worldwide 3.

That figure covers people aged 15 to 64 and any generative AI product, so it does not measure ChatGPT or business-recommendation prompts 3. It does tell you that most of your buyers still start with Google.

Statcounter agrees on the search side. It recorded Google at 96.87% of search referrals in Kenya in September 2026, with Bing at 2.59% 1. Put Google results first and treat AI assistants as a small but growing layer.

Should you write in Swahili or English?

Write the core service pages in English and add Swahili where your customers speak it. English and Swahili are the two official languages, and Swahili is also the national language 5. Wikipedia says Swahili is a lingua franca spoken by more people than English once second-language speakers are counted, while English is widely used in commerce, schooling and government 5.

Kenya also has many community languages. The article lists Kikuyu, Dholuo, Kalenjin languages, Kamba and others, but tags its census figures as unverified, so we quote none of them 5. It does not describe Sheng, the urban slang, so we make no claim about how it shows up in search.

A good test is your own call log. If buyers ask for a plumber in Swahili, write a Swahili page with the same facts as the English one. Keep each page in one language, on its own URL, and link the two versions 10.

Why does mobile money belong in your content?

Because buyers ask how to pay, and an assistant can only answer if you say it. M-Pesa is a phone-based service for sending money and paying for goods, launched commercially by Safaricom and Vodafone in 2007 after a pilot that began in October 2005 6.

Wikipedia reports that about 17 million M-Pesa accounts existed by 2011 or 2012, depending on the passage, which is dated 6. We found no current verified adoption figure, so we do not quote one.

The content rule is plain. On every service page, list the payment methods you accept, in a sentence a quoting engine can lift, and say whether the price includes VAT and fees. A line such as 'We accept M-Pesa, card and bank transfer; prices include VAT' answers a question buyers do ask.

Where does Nairobi fit?

Nairobi is the obvious first city. Wikipedia estimates its population at 5,603,502 in 2026 and says Nairobi County contributed 27.5% of Kenya's GDP in 2022 data from the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics 7. It lists upmarket areas such as Westlands, Kilimani and Karen, and the Upper Hill district 7.

That gives you real material for local pages: a clinic in Karen and one in Kilimani serve different people and have different parking, landmarks and prices. Do not copy a page and swap the name.

Konza Technopolis, a technology hub being built 64 km south of Nairobi, is also known as Silicon Savannah 11. For a software or services firm, named clients, local events and local press are stronger proof than any label.

What does the Kenya Data Protection Act require?

It requires consent, fair handling and, for many firms, registration. The Data Protection Act, 2019 took effect on 25 November 2019 and set up the Office of the Data Protection Commissioner, which keeps the register of controllers and processors 4.

Entities with annual turnover below KES 5 million and fewer than 10 employees are exempt from registration, but certain sectors must register regardless of size, including financial services, telecoms, health, education, digital credit, hospitality, property, transport and direct marketing 4. A penalty notice can reach the lower of KES 5 million or 1% of the prior year's turnover 4.

On marketing, section 37 bars commercial use of personal data without express consent or legal authority. For non-sensitive data, direct marketing is allowed only if the data came directly from the person, they were told marketing was a purpose, they consented, and a simple opt-out exists 4. Moving data out of Kenya is heavily regulated 4. This is a law-firm summary, not legal advice.

What about consumer and advertising rules?

Kenya's Competition Authority says its mandate includes preventing misleading market conduct, and it cites the Competition Act and the Constitution's consumer rights 8. Its site lists a 24 February 2026 determination titled 'Misleading Representation and Unconscionable Conduct', though the outcome is not shown on the page 8.

The page does not set out advertising rules in detail, so we make no claim about them. Have a Kenyan lawyer check price claims, comparisons and testimonials before publishing.

How do you start this month?

Pick Nairobi and one service. Write ten pages, each answering one question your customers ask by phone or WhatsApp, with prices in shillings and your area. Put an M-Pesa line on every price page, and pilot Swahili versions of two pages. Use the question research guide to collect the questions.

Then set up a Google Business Profile, a data notice on each form, and a monthly prompt list with the prompt list builder. Compare notes with the Nigeria guide and the South Africa guide, which face a similar mobile-first audience.

Rules and platforms that shape results

Rules to know

  • Data Protection Act, 2019. In force 25 November 2019. ODPC keeps a register; small firms under KES 5 million turnover and 10 staff are exempt but listed sectors are not; penalty up to the lower of KES 5 million or 1% of turnover; express consent for commercial use.4
  • Competition Act and consumer rights. The Competition Authority enforces a ban on misleading market conduct. We did not verify detailed advertising rules; seek local legal advice.8

Platforms that matter here

  • Google Search, AI Overviews and AI Mode
  • ChatGPT and other assistants
  • M-Pesa as a payment method named on pages
  • Google Business Profile and Maps
  • Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and YouTube
  • WhatsApp for enquiries (we found no verified usage figure)

What works in Kenya

  • Write core pages in English and add Swahili versions of the top service pages where call data shows demand.
  • List accepted payments, including M-Pesa, and whether prices include VAT, in one quotable sentence per page.
  • Name your Nairobi area, such as Westlands, Kilimani, Karen or Upper Hill, with directions and landmarks.
  • Set up and complete a Google Business Profile, then keep name, address and phone identical elsewhere.
  • Add a data notice and an explicit consent box to every form, and check whether you must register with the ODPC.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming everyone searches in English or everyone in Swahili without checking call data.
  • Quoting an M-Pesa adoption figure from an old source as if current.
  • Skipping ODPC registration checks in a regulated sector such as health or finance.
  • Copying one Nairobi area page across all areas with the name swapped.

Frequently asked questions

How can a business in Kenya get recommended by ChatGPT?

Publish clear English pages, with Swahili versions where customers use them, stating the service, price in shillings, accepted payments and area, and keep your details identical across your site and Google Business Profile. Nobody controls what an assistant recommends, since these are third-party systems, but verifiable pages give them something to quote.

Do Kenyans search in Swahili or English?

Both. English and Swahili are official languages, and Swahili is the national language 5. We found no verified split of search queries by language, so check your own call and chat logs, then add Swahili pages where buyers use it. Keep each page in one language 10.

Do I have to register with the Data Protection Commissioner?

Maybe. Firms with turnover below KES 5 million and fewer than 10 employees are exempt, but financial services, telecoms, health, education, digital credit, hospitality, property, transport and direct marketing firms must register regardless of size 4. Confirm with a Kenyan lawyer, because thresholds are set by the ODPC and can change.

Is AI search important in Kenya yet?

It is early. About 8.9% of working-age Kenyans used a generative AI product in June 2026 3, and Google held 96.87% of search referrals in September 2026 1. Prioritise Google visibility, then add AI tracking, because assistant use is growing from a low base.
