What Is an AI Citation, and How Do You Get One?

The short answer

An AI citation is a link that an AI answer shows as a source for what it says, such as a footnote in ChatGPT or a supporting link in Google AI Overviews. A mention is different: your brand name appears in the text with no link 1. To earn citations, make pages crawlable, quotable and backed by sources.

  • A citation is a source link in an AI answer. A mention is your name in the text. You can have either without the other 1.
  • Google says no special optimisation is needed beyond being indexed and eligible to show with a snippet 2.
  • In one 11.84 billion citation dataset from Profound, which sells citation tracking, about 57% of citations went to brand-owned sites, so your own pages matter 4.
  • Citations fade quickly. A Profound study of 883,000 pages found the median page lost half its citation share 11 days after peaking 5.

What is an AI citation?

An AI citation is a source the AI answer points to. When ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini or Google AI Overviews writes an answer and shows a link or footnote beside a claim, that link is a citation of the page behind it.

Ahrefs, which sells a tracking tool, counts a citation when an AI platform links to your site as a source, and a mention when your brand name appears in the answer text 1. We use the same split on this page.

Why does the difference matter? A citation can send a visitor and proves the AI used your page. A mention builds familiarity but gives the reader nothing to click.

Explain it at your level

When an AI tool answers your question, it often shows where it got the information, like a footnote. That footnote is a citation. If your website is the footnote, people can click to you, and you know the AI trusted your page enough to use it.

What is the difference between a citation, a mention and a link?

They are three separate events, and a report that blends them will mislead you. Use the table to label what you see in an answer.

A fourth case is worth tracking by hand: a recommendation, where the AI tells the reader to choose you. A recommendation can happen without a citation and a citation can happen without a recommendation.

Four things an AI answer can do with your brand
EventWhat the reader seesCan it send a visitor? How to spot it
CitationYour page listed as a source or footnoteYes, if clickedYour URL or domain appears in the source list
MentionYour brand name in the answer textNo, unless the reader searches for youYour name appears, no link to your site
Link in textA clickable name inside the sentenceYesDepends on the engine; check the answer yourself
RecommendationThe AI says to choose youIndirectlyYour name appears in the verdict or top pick

How do AI engines show citations?

Each engine shows sources a little differently, and the layout changes often, so check it yourself before you rely on it. The common pattern is a link or number next to a claim, plus a list of sources at the end.

Google puts supporting links in its AI Overviews and AI Mode answers. A page can only be shown there if it is indexed and eligible to appear in Google Search with a snippet 2. Google adds that it may run several related searches behind one question, which can surface a wider set of links than a classic search 2.

OpenAI says its OAI-SearchBot crawler surfaces sites in ChatGPT search, and that a site which opts out may still appear only as a navigational link 7. In practice that means a robots.txt block can remove you from ChatGPT's source lists. The AI crawler checker shows what you currently allow.

What did an AI tool search for when asked about AI citations?

On 20 October 2026 we gave this question to a Claude agent with web search. It ran one search, and that search repeated our wording almost word for word: what is an AI citation. That is one run on one tool, so do not generalise it.

How do you earn AI citations?

Start with access, then give the AI something worth quoting. Access means the right bots are allowed and the page is indexed. Quotability means a clear answer near the top, backed by a named source.

Ahrefs, which sells a tracking tool, ran a correlation study of about 75,000 brands. Branded web mentions tracked AI mentions more closely than backlinks did, and Ahrefs says the result shows correlation, not cause 3. The takeaway is modest: being talked about across the web seems to matter more than link counts.

Where citations come from varies by AI tool. Profound's 11.84 billion citation dataset found about 57% went to brand-owned sites overall, but only 47% in ChatGPT against 69% in Gemini 4. So publish good pages on your own site and also earn mentions elsewhere.

  • Allow search crawlers in robots.txt and confirm key pages are indexed.
  • Open each page with a two-sentence direct answer (see what is an answer block).
  • Name the source for every statistic, in the sentence that uses it.
  • Comparison, listicle and review pages had the longest median at 29 days, only a day or two ahead of explainers 5.
  • Earn mentions on sites AI tools already cite for your topic.

How long does an AI citation last?

Not long, on average. Profound followed 883,000 pages across seven answer engines for a year. The median page lost half its citation share 11 days after its peak 5.

Among pages that held on, comparison, listicle and review pages halved after a median 29 days against 27 to 28 days for other types 5. The gap is small, and Profound sells citation tracking and labels content with an automated classifier.

The lesson is to treat citations as a rate, not a trophy. Re-check your prompts every week and refresh pages that drop out.

How do you track your AI citations?

You have three options: free reports, a manual log, or a paid tool. Bing Webmaster Tools has an AI Performance report, launched in public preview on 10 February 2026, that shows how often your content is cited as a source in AI answers 6. Microsoft says its grounding-query data is a sample and does not show ranking or importance 6.

For everything else, keep a manual log. Pick ten prompts a buyer would ask, run each in the main assistants weekly, and record whether you were cited, mentioned or absent. The fuller method is in how to measure AI share of voice.

A minimal weekly citation log (copy into a spreadsheet)
  • Date | Assistant | Prompt | Cited (Y/N) | Mentioned (Y/N) | Which URL | Competitors named
  • 2026-10-20 | ChatGPT | best invoice software for freelancers | N | Y | - | Acme, Beta
  • 2026-10-20 | Perplexity | best invoice software for freelancers | Y | Y | /guides/invoice-software | Acme

What do people get wrong about AI citations?

The biggest myth is that you need a special file or markup. Google's documentation says there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and no special optimisation 2. Fundamentals still apply.

A second myth is that a top Google ranking means you will be cited. Ahrefs found that only 37.9% of URLs cited in AI Overviews also appeared in the first 10 blocks of the results page in its March 2026 study of about 4 million URLs 8. Ahrefs suggests query fan-out is part of the reason, but calls this a hypothesis 8.

What an AI assistant searches when it answers this

We gave the question below to AI search tools and recorded the web searches they ran behind the scenes. This is called query fan-out. Each phrase is a page you could publish to be found and cited.

The prompt

“what is an AI citation and how do I get one”

The searches it ran
  • what is an AI citation

Observed October 20, 2026 using Claude web search. Claude agents were told to run 6 to 10 searches, so that count is our setting, not Claude's own choice. Assistants differ and change often, so treat this as a sample, not a rule. See how we collect it.

Frequently asked questions

Is a mention the same as a citation?

No. A mention is your brand name appearing in the answer text. A citation is a link to your page shown as a source 1. You can be mentioned without being cited, for example when the AI repeats your name from another site's content.

Do I need schema or llms.txt to get cited?

Google says no special markup or files are required to appear in its AI features 2. Structured data can still help machines read a page, but treat it as housekeeping, not a citation switch. The llms.txt generator is optional.

Why was my page cited yesterday and not today?

AI answers are probabilistic and the cited set changes between runs. In one year-long study, the median page lost half its citation share within 11 days of its peak 5. Check a prompt several times before you treat a drop as real.

Can I see my AI citations for free?

Partly. Bing Webmaster Tools has an AI Performance report showing citations in Microsoft Copilot and Bing AI summaries, though Microsoft says some of the data is a sample 6. For ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini, use a manual weekly prompt log.
