What Is Zero-Click Search?

The short answer

A zero-click search is a search where the person gets the answer on the results page and never clicks through to a website. Google AI summaries make this more common: in a Pew Research study, people clicked a normal result link in 8% of visits with an AI summary and 15% without one 1. Track visibility and enquiries, not clicks alone.

  • Zero-click means the answer is shown on the results page, so no website visit happens. It is older than AI search.
  • Pew found 8% of visits clicked a result link with an AI summary, against 15% without one 1.
  • Studies disagree on size. Ahrefs reports a 58% lower top-result click rate; Semrush saw zero-click rates fall slightly 35.
  • Measure impressions, brand searches, citations and enquiries. A falling click count is not the whole story.

What is zero-click search?

A zero-click search is one that ends on the results page. The person types a question, reads the answer Google or an AI tool shows, and leaves without visiting any website, including yours 2.

The idea is older than AI. Weather boxes, sports scores, currency conversions and featured snippets (the short answer boxes at the top of Google) have answered questions on the results page for years. AI summaries extend the same pattern to harder questions.

The term describes a behaviour, not a penalty. Your site was not demoted. The person simply got what they needed before reaching you.

Explain it at your level

Zero-click search means you ask Google or an AI tool a question, read the answer on the screen, and stop. You never open a website. For a business, that means people can learn about your topic, and even see your name, without ever landing on your pages.

How does zero-click search happen?

It happens when the results page itself contains a complete enough answer. Three kinds of result do this: direct answer boxes, featured snippets and AI summaries such as Google AI Overviews.

AI summaries matter most because they cover long, specific questions that used to need several clicks. An AI tool such as Google AI Mode can also split one question into many smaller searches and read the pages itself, a method called query fan-out. The reader sees one combined answer and may never open the pages it used.

Links still appear, but they get few clicks. In the Pew study, people clicked a link inside the AI summary in only 1% of visits that showed one 1.

How much traffic does zero-click search cost you?

Published studies agree on the direction for informational searches but not on the size. Treat every number below as one dataset, not a law.

Pew tracked the Google use of 900 US adults in March 2025. Visits with an AI summary ended the browsing session 26% of the time, against 16% without one. About 18% of the 68,879 searches it checked produced a summary 1. This was observation, not an experiment, so the searches that trigger summaries may simply differ from the rest.

Ahrefs compared 300,000 keywords from December 2023 with December 2025. Where an AI Overview showed, the top result's click-through rate (the share of viewers who click) was about 58% lower than a forecast built from keywords without one 3. Ahrefs says AI Overview presence "correlates with" the lower rate; this is observational and desktop only, and the effect was smaller lower on the page (about 51% lower at position 2, 19% at position 10).

Do all studies show clicks falling?

No. Semrush followed keywords that gained an AI Overview between May and October 2025. Their zero-click rate went from 33.75% to 31.53%, so it fell slightly 5. The comparison covers keywords that did not show an AI Overview in May but did in October, so it may not represent all search.

Google's head of Search wrote in August 2025 that total clicks to websites were relatively stable year over year and that the clicks it sends are higher quality 6. Those figures are Google's own and the post shares no underlying data.

How can both be true? Overall clicks can hold steady while individual pages lose or gain a lot. Informational pages that answer simple questions are the most exposed. Pages that answer deeper or more personal questions are less so.

What do AI tools search for when asked about zero-click search?

On 20 October 2026 we gave this question to Gemini and to a Claude agent with web search and recorded the searches they ran. Together they ran the eight below, which split one question into definition, data, impact and advice.

Notice what is missing. None of the searches asked about a specific tool, and two ask for a study or a metric. A page that answers these needs numbers with sources, not only a definition.

What do people get wrong about zero-click search?

The most common mistake is to treat one headline number as universal. The figure that circulates most is that 60% of Google searches ended without a click. Ahrefs attributes it to a 2024 SparkToro study of Google searches 2. We did not open the SparkToro study, so check its region and method before quoting the figure. The figure counts every search, including weather and navigation, so it says little about your pages.

A second mistake is to assume zero-click means zero value. Clicks that do arrive may be better. Google says clicks from AI Overviews are higher quality 7, though that is a claim from the company that runs the feature.

What should you measure instead of clicks?

Measure four things alongside clicks: impressions, brand demand, citations and enquiries. Together they show whether people see you, remember you and act.

Ahrefs suggests tracking brand mentions in AI answers, direct, referral and social traffic, and conversions by channel 2. Comparing impressions with clicks on informational pages is our own addition. Seer found brands cited inside an AI Overview earned 0.70% organic clicks against 0.52% for uncited brands, though Seer says it cannot prove citation causes the gap 4.

How can you adapt this week?

Start with one afternoon of work. Pick your ten most-visited informational pages, note their clicks and impressions for the last three months, and flag those where clicks fell while impressions held.

Then do three things. Put a direct two-sentence answer at the top of those pages so an AI tool can quote you, using the approach in the answer block checker. Add a "how did you hear about us" field to your enquiry form. Start a list of ten prompts your buyers might ask and note weekly whether you are named; the AI citations page explains what counts.

Finally, accept that some pages will not recover clicks. For questions with a simple answer, being cited with your brand name may be the best result available.

Frequently asked questions

What percentage of searches are zero-click?

It depends on the dataset. A 2024 SparkToro study, cited by Ahrefs, put it at 60% of Google searches 2. That includes simple lookups. For your pages, the relevant number is the click rate on your own informational queries in Search Console.

Do AI Overviews cause zero-click searches?

They can raise them, but the evidence is mixed. Pew saw fewer result clicks with a summary present 1, while Semrush saw zero-click rates dip slightly on keywords that gained one 5. Both are observational, so neither proves cause.

Is zero-click search bad for SEO?

It changes what SEO should aim for. Informational pages may earn fewer clicks, so success moves toward being cited, being remembered and winning enquiries. Pages built to convert, such as pricing and product pages, matter more because they are where the remaining clicks land.

How do I measure brand visibility without clicks?

Track branded search volume, direct visits, how many AI answers on a fixed prompt list name you, and a self-reported "how did you hear about us" field. Review them monthly. The how-to on tracking AI traffic in GA4 covers the clicks that do arrive.

Are local businesses affected by zero-click search?

We found no reliable published study that splits zero-click rates by industry or for local businesses, so we will not give a number. Local searches often end on a map listing or a phone call, which is a result even though no website visit occurs.
