What Does an AI SEO Agency Actually Do?

The short answer

An AI SEO agency helps your business get found and cited in AI answers as well as Google. Typical work is buyer-question research, technical fixes so AI bots can read your site, answer-first pages, brand-mention work and monthly reporting. A good agency explains each change, measures it and does not promise rankings or citations.

  • Real deliverables are research, technical fixes, published pages, mention work and a monthly report you can read.
  • Nobody controls AI answers, so be wary of any promise of rankings, citations or lead counts.
  • Published price data is mostly for classic SEO; AI-specific pricing evidence is thin.
  • Ask for named work, a written scope, read-only access and a plan for how results will be measured.

What does an AI SEO agency do?

An AI SEO agency works on your visibility in tools such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot and Google's AI features, usually alongside classic search. Many call the work GEO (generative engine optimization) or AEO (answer engine optimization). The names overlap, and agencies use them loosely.

The core job is to make your site easy for machines to read and your brand easy to recommend. In practice that means finding the questions buyers ask, publishing pages that answer them, and fixing anything that stops AI bots from reading your site.

Google's own guide says no special markup or files are needed for its generative AI features, and that standard SEO practice stays foundational 1. A good agency should be able to say which of its tasks Google asks for and which are its own judgement.

Explain it at your level

An AI SEO agency is a team you pay to help AI assistants find, understand and recommend your business. It researches what your customers ask, fixes your website so machines can read it, writes pages that answer those questions, and reports what changed.

No agency controls what ChatGPT or Google says. The honest ones promise effort and reporting, not outcomes.

What do people and AI tools ask about hiring one?

Claude was asked this question on 20 October 2026, and its searches are logged below. The five searches cover services, how to choose, pricing and proof, which is also how this page is organised.

Observed on 2026-10-20 (Claude, one run): searches for 'what does an AI SEO agency do'
  • 1. what does an AI SEO agency do
  • 2. generative engine optimization agency services
  • 3. how to choose a GEO agency
  • 4. AI SEO agency pricing retainer 2026
  • 5. AI SEO agency case study results

Which deliverables should you expect?

Expect concrete outputs you can open and check. The table below lists the usual ones and a test for each. Scopes differ between agencies, so compare them line by line.

Typical AI SEO deliverables and how to check them
DeliverableWhat it isHow you can check it
Buyer-question researchA list of prompts and sub-questions buyers ask, mapped to pagesYou can read the list and run a sample yourself
Technical access reviewFixes for robots.txt, firewall rules and script-only contentA bot test or log check shows the change
Answer pages and rewritesNew or revised pages that open with a direct answerThe pages are live on your site and you own them
Structured data and factsConsistent brand details and, where useful, schema markupRich result and schema tests pass
Mention and review workPlacing accurate information where AI tools readLinks or listings you can open
Monthly reportPrompt-based visibility checks, analytics and next stepsRaw prompt results are shared, not just a score

What does the monthly rhythm look like?

Agencies structure this differently and we found no survey of typical cadence. Chalk Labs' two monthly plans run as a three-month programme that publishes answer pages, then refreshes and optimises them.

A monthly call should cover what changed, what was measured, and what happens next. Ask any agency for a written 90-day plan before you sign.

Treat a monthly retainer as a way to buy steady work, not a way to buy a result. Ask for the right to stop at the end of a month if the work does not show clear progress.

What can an agency actually measure?

Agencies can measure whether bots can reach you, whether pages are live, and whether your brand appears in a fixed set of prompts. They can also show tool data. Google says clicks from AI Overviews and AI Mode are included in overall Search Console web traffic 2, and Bing's AI Performance report shows citation counts from Copilot as a sample 3.

They cannot measure everything. In GA4, Google's AI Assistant channel counts visits from tools such as ChatGPT, but it excludes AI Overviews and AI Mode, which sit in Organic Search 4. Some AI visits also arrive with no referrer and look like direct traffic.

So ask how the agency will estimate AI influence, for example with a 'How did you hear about us?' question that includes AI tools.

How much does an AI SEO agency cost?

We found no reliable survey of AI-specific agency pricing, so we use classic SEO surveys as a rough reference only. Chalk Labs' monthly plans, at $3,000 and $4,000, sit above the survey figures below, and its $1,000 plan is a one-time fee, not a retainer. A higher price is not evidence of better value. Ahrefs polled 439 SEO providers in 2024 and reported an average of $2,917 per month, with a monthly retainer the most common model (78.2%) and $501 to $1,000 the most popular band 5. Backlinko's survey of over 300 professionals, updated December 2025, puts the usual range at $1,000 to $2,500 per month 6.

SE Ranking surveyed 260 agencies in December 2024. Those that had set AI Overview optimisation prices charged or planned an average of about $937 per month, and 61% said they intended to add AI optimisation 7. That sample is small and dated, so treat it as a rough marker.

Prices vary by scope, location and how much is done for you. Always compare what is included, not only the monthly figure.

How do you choose an AI SEO agency?

Start with criteria, then shortlist. Google's guidance on hiring an SEO suggests asking for examples of past work, how success will be measured and when to expect results, and how every change will be documented and communicated 8. Those questions apply equally to AI SEO.

Add AI-specific questions. Which assistants will you test? How many prompts, and will I see the raw answers? Who owns the pages after the contract ends? What will you not do?

Watch for AI-specific red flags too: promises of citations in ChatGPT, reports that show only a vendor score with no raw prompts, and buying mentions or links to look popular (Google says inauthentic mentions are not helpful 1).

Compare at least three providers on the same scope. Our freelancer versus agency and in-house versus agency pages help you decide the model first.

How should you judge agency case studies?

Ask what was measured, over what period, for whom, and whether the agency did the work. A case study without a date range, a metric and a named business is a story, not evidence.

Separate your own results from borrowed ones. Many agencies quote vendor statistics or other firms' clients. That is fine if it is labelled, and misleading if it is not.

Keep expectations realistic. Search results can take weeks or months to appear, and Google says changes can take from hours to several months 9. Be cautious of anyone selling a fixed number of days to results.

Where does Chalk Labs fit?

Disclosure: this library is published by Chalk Labs, so we have a commercial interest. Chalk Labs is one option among many. Rahil Jain, co-founder of Chalk Labs, runs its AI SEO programme.

Our plans are Strategic Consulting at $1,000 one-time, where we hand you the plan and your team executes, and Strategic Execution at $3,000 per month or Deep Execution at $4,000 per month, where we do the work, including 100 or 200 answer pages. We do not guarantee rankings, citations or lead counts.

Our own published results are from a local trophy shop in Bengaluru (Meru Trophy), which reached 27,300 Google clicks and 2.3 million impressions in 16 months, and from a personal-brand site, shilikajain.com. Those are Chalk Labs' own cases, are search-led and are measured in months. Check them against any provider you compare. Details are on our case studies page. These results are not a guarantee for any other business.

When should you not hire an agency?

Skip it if your site has no basics yet. Fix crawl access, publish clear service pages and run a simple prompt check yourself first. Our AI SEO audit page lists the steps.

Skip it if you cannot act on advice. An agency that recommends changes your developers cannot ship will produce reports and little else.

What an AI assistant searches when it answers this

We gave the question below to AI search tools and recorded the web searches they ran behind the scenes. This is called query fan-out. Each phrase is a page you could publish to be found and cited.

The prompt

“what does an AI SEO agency do”

The searches it ran
  • what does an AI SEO agency do
  • generative engine optimization agency services
  • how to choose a GEO agency
  • AI SEO agency pricing retainer 2026
  • AI SEO agency case study results

Observed October 20, 2026 using Claude web search. Claude agents were told to run 6 to 10 searches, so that count is our setting, not Claude's own choice. Assistants differ and change often, so treat this as a sample, not a rule. See how we collect it.

Frequently asked questions

Is an AI SEO agency different from an SEO agency?

Often they are the same firm with a new label. Real differences are in the AI-specific work: bot access for ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity, prompt-based visibility checks, and pages written to be quoted. Ask for the specific deliverables rather than relying on the name.

Can an agency promise I will appear in ChatGPT?

No. AI engines are third parties and their answers change between runs. Google also says nobody can guarantee a number one ranking. Treat any promise of citations or rankings as a red flag and ask instead how progress will be measured.

How long before I see results from an AI SEO agency?

It varies. Google says SEO changes can take from a few hours to several months to show, and suggests waiting a few weeks before judging. We hold no reliable cross-industry benchmark for AI visibility, so ask for a measurement plan and a 90-day review point.

What should I ask for in the contract?

Ask for a written scope, deliverables per month, who owns the content and data, reporting format with raw prompt results, access levels and how to stop. A stop clause at the end of any month limits your risk if the work is not delivering.

Do I need an agency or can I do AI SEO myself?

Many basics can be done in-house: check bot access, write answer-first pages and track a prompt list. An agency helps when you lack time or skills, or need volume. Our in-house versus agency comparison helps you decide.
