What Is an AI Visibility Score?
An AI visibility score is a number that tells you how often AI assistants show your brand when people ask questions in your market. There is no standard formula. Semrush counts the share of tracked prompts that name you, while other tools count citations or share of authority 13. Compare a score only with itself over time.
- An AI visibility score summarises how often AI answers name or cite you. Each vendor defines it differently.
- Semrush measures the share of tracked prompts naming your brand 1. Microsoft Clarity reports page citations and share of authority 3.
- Scores from different tools, or even different prompt lists, are not comparable 6.
- A simple do-it-yourself score from a fixed prompt list beats a vendor number you cannot explain.
What is an AI visibility score?
An AI visibility score is a single figure that tries to say how visible your brand is inside AI answers. Think of it as a dashboard gauge for AI search, except there is no standard: useful as a trend, meaningless if you do not know how it was calculated.
The score usually starts with a list of prompts, which are the questions a buyer might ask an assistant. A tool runs them in one or more AI products and checks whether your brand shows up. The result is turned into a number or a percentage.
Because the idea is new, no body sets a standard. Each vendor chooses its own inputs, and that is where the confusion starts.
What do vendors actually measure?
They measure different things under similar names. Four examples show the range.
Semrush defines AI visibility rate as the share of your tracked prompts where your brand appears, and tracks a fixed set of prompts daily on one platform per campaign 1. Ahrefs Brand Radar counts mentions, meaning your name in the answer text, and citations, meaning links to your pages as a source 2. Microsoft Clarity's citation dashboard reports page citations and a share of authority against competitors, and says it does not measure rankings or clicks 3.
| Vendor or tool | What it counts | What it leaves out |
|---|---|---|
| Semrush AI visibility rate | Share of tracked prompts where your brand appears 1 | How prominent or favourable the mention is |
| Ahrefs Brand Radar | Mentions in answer text and citations as source links, kept separate 2 | Real user demand; the volume figure it shows is an estimate from Google volume 7 |
| Microsoft Clarity Citation dashboard | Page citations, share of authority, query topics 3 | Rankings, impressions and clicks 3 |
| Bing Webmaster Tools AI Performance | Total citations and cited pages; grounding queries are a sample 4 | Where a citation appears or how important it is 4 |
Why can't you compare scores between tools?
Three things differ: the prompts, the assistants and the formula. Change any one and the score moves, even if nothing changed in the real world.
Prompt choice matters more than most buyers expect. Profound's study of 753 prompts on seven platforms said portfolio construction is the bigger lever for citation share than more runs, and that the prompts you track decide what visibility means 6. Profound sells tracking, so read this as a vendor finding, but it fits common sense.
So a score of 60 from one tool and 35 from another does not mean you are visible on one and invisible on the other. It means two different measurements.
What does a visibility score miss?
It misses tone, accuracy and outcome. Seer Interactive argues that a visibility metric counts a glowing mention and a lukewarm one the same, and proposes also tracking how accurately AI describes you and whether people who saw AI content go on to convert 5.
It also misses demand. Ahrefs estimates AI prompt demand by applying a ratio to Google search volume, because, with the exception of Microsoft Copilot, no major AI platform shares prompt data. Ahrefs says the figures are directional and cannot show how many real people saw your brand 7.
A score tells you whether you appear. It does not tell you whether appearing is making you money.
How do you build your own AI visibility score?
Keep it simple and write it down. Choose 20 to 30 buyer prompts and run them weekly in the assistants your customers use. For each answer, give one point if your brand is named, and one more point if a page of yours is cited.
The weights below are our suggestion, not a standard. Their value is that you can explain every number. Semrush notes its prompt list must stay constant for at least a month or trend lines break 1, so apply the same rule.
| Part | How to count it | Example (illustrative) |
|---|---|---|
| Presence | Answers naming you / all answers | 12 of 60 = 20% |
| Citation | Answers citing your pages / all answers | 6 of 60 = 10% |
| Tone check | Of the answers naming you, share that describe you accurately | 9 of 12 = 75% |
| Score | Report the three numbers side by side, not one blended figure | 20% / 10% / 75% |
How should you use a score once you have one?
Use it as a trend, not a grade. Review it monthly against your own past results and against two or three named competitors on identical prompts.
Pair it with business measures. Microsoft's documentation notes the citation dashboard tracks activity inside AI answers only 3, so you still need analytics and a self-reported source on your enquiry form to see the effect on leads. The AI share of voice page covers the competitor comparison, and prompt tracking explains why you must repeat the runs.
If a score rises, check why before celebrating. Did you add easy prompts? Did a competitor stop being named? Write the cause down.
When is a visibility score not worth chasing?
It is not worth much before the basics are in place. If AI crawlers are blocked, or your key pages say nothing a buyer can quote, a score will only confirm what you already suspect.
Fix access first with the AI crawler checker, then write pages that answer buyer questions. Measure afterwards. In our view, a tracking tool that costs more than the content work is usually the wrong first spend.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good AI visibility score?
No benchmark applies across tools, because each defines the score differently. A better test is movement against your own history and against named competitors on identical prompts. If you appear in more of the same prompts month after month, that is progress.
Is an AI visibility score the same as Google ranking?
No. Rankings measure position in a list of links. A visibility score measures whether you are named or cited inside an AI answer. Microsoft says its citation dashboard does not measure traditional rankings, impressions or click-through rates 3.
Can I trust the visibility score from a paid tool?
Trust it as far as you can audit it. Ask to see the prompt list, the platforms and the formula. Semrush, for example, publishes that its rate is the share of tracked prompts naming your brand 1, which you can verify by hand.
How many prompts should my score cover?
Start with 20 to 30 real buyer questions. Semrush suggests about 30 and says to keep the list constant for at least a month 1. More prompts help only if they are questions your buyers genuinely ask.
Does a higher score mean more customers?
Not by itself. We found no study proving a direct link, and AI visits are often logged as direct traffic. Track enquiries with a "how did you hear about us" field and compare them with your score each month.
