What Is Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)?
Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of writing and structuring pages so that AI assistants, AI Overviews and other answer boxes can lift a short, correct answer from your page and credit you. It focuses on clear answers, one idea per section and plain, readable HTML. Google calls AEO a third-party term and says the work is still SEO 1.
- An answer engine replies with an answer, not a list of links. AEO makes your page the easiest place to take that answer from.
- Lead each section with a self-contained answer. Microsoft says assistants can often lift question-and-answer pairs word for word 2.
- Google ended FAQ rich results in May 2026 and says no special markup is needed for its AI features 31.
- We found no controlled study that isolates answer formatting. Treat AEO as sound practice, not proven lift.
- Measure with Search Console, Bing's AI Performance report, GA4 and a prompt log. Each one sees only part of the picture.
What is answer engine optimization (AEO)?
Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of writing and structuring your pages so an answer engine can lift a short, correct answer from them and credit you. An answer engine is any tool that replies to a question with an answer instead of a list of links. ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot and Google's AI Overviews all fit.
Definitions vary. Google names AEO and GEO as third-party labels for work that improves visibility in AI search, and says that work is still SEO 1. Microsoft's advertiser guide, as reported by Search Engine Roundtable, uses AEO for helping AI agents and assistants find, understand and present answers, and GEO for being seen as trustworthy in generative search 4. We follow that split: AEO is the clarity side of AI SEO, and GEO is the credibility side.
AEO asks one question. If a machine had to quote one passage from this page, would it find a good one?
Where did AEO come from, and why does it matter now?
AEO grew out of featured snippets, the answer box Google has shown above results for years. Google says its systems decide whether a page makes a good featured snippet, and that you cannot mark up a page to get one 5. The aim was the same then as now: be the one passage the engine shows.
That box is shrinking while AI answers grow. In a sample of one million US desktop results pages, Ahrefs found featured snippets fell from 15.41% to 5.53% between January and June 2025, while AI Overviews rose from 3.93% to 27.43% 6. The author calls the link between the two a hunch, because the data shows only that they moved together 6.
Clicks make the shift matter. Pew Research Center found that people clicked a normal result link in 8% of visits to a results page with an AI summary, against 15% without one 7. Our reading is that being the quoted answer now carries more weight than being one more blue link.
Voice search is often named alongside AEO. We found no current, reliable measurement of how voice assistants pick web answers, so this page makes no claim about voice. For the older answer box, see featured snippets.
How does an answer engine choose what to quote?
It decides whether to search, runs one or more searches, breaks the results into pieces and writes an answer from the best pieces. Not every answer involves a search. Ahrefs found fan-out (search) queries in 14.4% of 66.6 million free, logged-out ChatGPT responses (GPT-5.6 Luna, Aug to Sep 2026), averaging about 1.6 per such response 8.
So your job is to make the quotable piece easy to find and hard to misread.
- Pieces, not pages. Microsoft says Copilot parses content into smaller structured pieces that are ranked and assembled into answers 2. Perplexity splits documents into self-contained spans 9.
- Clean pairs travel well. Microsoft adds that assistants can often lift clear question-and-answer pairs word for word into responses 2.
- Hidden text may be skipped. Microsoft warns that AI systems may not render content in tabs or expandable menus, and that key details are safer in HTML than in images or PDFs 2.
- Sources are shown. Copilot Search links the sentence or passage it used, so a clear sentence is a clear citation 10.
What did two AI tools search for when we asked about AEO?
On 20 October 2026 we asked 'what is answer engine optimization AEO' to Gemini 2.5 Flash and to a Claude agent with a web search tool, and together they ran searches for six different needs 11.
The two runs named 16 different websites, and only hubspot.com appeared in both. One run on one day is a small sample, so read this as an illustration of the method.
What does an AEO-ready answer look like?
It opens with the answer in 40 to 75 words, names the subject, gives one concrete fact and makes sense if quoted alone. We call this an answer block, We put one at the top of every page, and we open each section with its answer in a sentence or two. The box at the top of this page is one, and the Answer Block Checker tests yours. No engine publishes a length rule, so 40 to 75 words is our working range.
Write the block last, once you know the facts. Then read it aloud without the page around it. If a stranger could not act on it, rewrite it. More in What Is an Answer Block? and How to Write Answer-First Introductions.
- Question: How much does bookkeeping cost for a small business?
- Before: Welcome to Northfield Books! We are passionate about helping small businesses thrive. Our friendly team has a package for every need, so get in touch to find out more.
- After: Bookkeeping at Northfield Books costs from $300 a month for up to 100 transactions and $450 for up to 300. Both prices include monthly reports and a tax-ready year-end file. The fee rises only if you pass your transaction limit. Prices last checked [month, year].
- Why it works: the first sentence answers, the business is named, the numbers have units, and the block still makes sense when quoted alone.
Do FAQ schema and structured data still help AEO?
FAQ content still helps, but FAQ markup no longer earns a Google rich result. Google's update log says the FAQ rich result stopped appearing in Google Search from 7 May 2026, and its documentation was removed on 15 June 2026 3. Google also says structured data is not required for generative AI search and that no special schema.org markup is needed 1.
Microsoft takes a gentler line. It says schema is code that helps search engines and AI systems understand content, though it does not put a number on the gain 2. If you add markup, follow Google's rules: mark up only what readers can see, and keep it a true picture of the page 12. See How to Add FAQ Schema and What Is Schema Markup?.
How is AEO different from SEO and GEO?
AEO is about being the answer, SEO about being the result, and GEO about being believed. The labels overlap, and both Google and Forrester say the gap from SEO is small 113. Use the table as a working map, not a rulebook.
| Label | Main question | Typical task |
|---|---|---|
| SEO | Can people find and rank my pages? | Crawlable, fast pages that match what people search for |
| AEO | Can an engine lift a correct answer from my page? | Answer blocks, one idea per section, plain HTML |
| GEO | Will engines cite and trust my content? | Facts, sources and quotes, plus mentions on other sites |
| LLMO | What does a model say about me without searching? | Consistent facts about you across the web |
What does the evidence say about AEO results?
Little of it isolates answer formatting, so treat AEO as sound practice and not proven lift. In the sources we read for this page, we found no controlled study that changes only the answer block and measures the result. The closest numbers come from related experiments.
Ahrefs published 34 pages promoting its own products and tracked 9,886 AI answers from February to May 2026. For a new conference, 82% of its new mentions came from answers that cited Ahrefs' pages, but for an established product only 6% did. And 43% of answers that cited a conference page never named the conference 14. Ahrefs calls this a small-scale experiment and says it is not proof 14.
How do you measure AEO?
Use several imperfect views and compare them month to month, because no single report shows everything. The table lists what each one can and cannot see.
Paid trackers automate the prompt log. Digiday reported in May 2026 that marketers doubt them, because different tools gave different answers to the same prompts and many give one-time snapshots 15. Start with the free views, and add a tool only when the log outgrows a spreadsheet. See How to Set Up an AI Visibility Tracking Spreadsheet.
| View | What it shows | What it misses |
|---|---|---|
| Search Console generative AI report 16 | Impressions of your pages in AI Overviews and AI Mode, by page, country, date and device | Clicks, and every assistant outside Google |
| Bing Webmaster Tools, AI Performance 17 | Citations in Copilot and Bing AI summaries, plus a sample of the queries behind them | Anything outside Microsoft; the data is a sample |
| GA4 AI Assistant channel 18 | Visits from assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot | Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, which GA4 files under Organic Search, and answers that lead to no click |
| Your own prompt log | Whether you are named, linked and correct for a fixed list of questions | Scale, and results change from run to run |
| 'How did you hear about us?' | Influence that leaves no click | Memory errors and small samples |
What do people get wrong about AEO?
'AEO needs special markup.' Google says it does not 1, and its FAQ rich result is gone 3.
'Short pages win.' Google says there is no need to cut content into tiny pieces for AI 1. Keep each section self-contained, but let the page run as long as the topic needs.
'Getting cited means getting recommended.' In Ahrefs' experiment, many answers cited a page without naming the brand behind it 14.
How can you apply AEO this week?
Rewrite the top of five pages and test them. Pick the five questions that bring you the most enquiries.
- Open each page and cover everything below the first paragraph. Does the top answer the question by itself?
- Rewrite the opening as an answer block, using the formula below.
- Add a short FAQ for the follow-up questions customers really ask, in plain HTML and not hidden in tabs.
- Ask the five questions in ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity before the change and again a few weeks later.
- Edit one page at a time and note the date, so you can tell what moved.
- [Subject] [verb] [direct answer] [one number, name or date].
- [Condition or exception that changes the answer].
- [Who it applies to, or who it does not apply to].
- Check: first sentence answers, subject is named, 40 to 75 words, no claim you cannot show on the page.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between AEO and SEO?
SEO aims to get your page found and ranked. AEO aims to get a passage from your page quoted as the answer. They share the same base of crawlable, trustworthy pages, and Google says optimizing for generative AI search is still SEO 1. Think of AEO as SEO with extra care about how each section reads on its own.
Is AEO the same as GEO?
They overlap, and there are no official definitions. One common split, reported from Microsoft's guide, treats AEO as clarity for assistants and GEO as credibility in generative search 4. Our comparison page, AEO vs GEO, shows where each matters and why most sites need both.
Do I need FAQ schema for AEO?
How long should an answer block be?
We use 40 to 75 words: long enough to hold a fact and a condition, short enough to quote whole. No engine publishes a rule, and Google says there is no need to break content into tiny pieces for AI 1. Test by reading the block alone. If it still makes sense, the length is right.
