What Are Google AI Overviews?
Google AI Overviews are AI-written summaries shown above regular search results, with links to supporting pages 1. Google says a page can be linked if it is indexed and eligible to show with a snippet, with no extra requirements 2. Google does not publish how it ranks eligible pages. One large study found about 38% of cited URLs ranked in the top 10 4.
- AI Overviews are AI-written summaries at the top of Google results, with links to the pages that support them 1.
- A page needs to be indexed and snippet-eligible to be linked. Google lists no special markup or files 2.
- Ahrefs found about 38% of cited URLs ranked in the top 10 in March 2026, against about 76% in July 2025 4.
- Click data conflicts: Pew saw fewer clicks when a summary appeared, while Google says total organic clicks are stable 812.
- In our test, two AI tools listed 17 sites between them for this question, and no site appeared on both lists.
What are Google AI Overviews?
Google AI Overviews are AI-written summaries that appear above the usual search results for some queries. Google describes each one as a snapshot with key information and links to dig deeper 1. They show when Google's systems judge that generative AI can help, for example when you want to understand information from a range of sources 1.
Google warns that AI Overviews can and will make mistakes. It also calls them a key Search feature that cannot be turned off, though a Web filter after searching shows text links only 1.
Reach is large. In July 2025 Google's CEO said AI Overviews had over 2 billion monthly users across more than 200 countries and territories and 40 languages 5. That is the latest figure we found, and it is Google's own, not an audited count.
On mobile, a tap on 'Show more' inside an AI Overview opens Google AI Mode, the conversational version 1.
How do AI Overviews pick their sources?
Google says AI Overviews find pages in its Search index and write an answer grounded in them. Its guide describes retrieving relevant, up-to-date pages from the Search index and showing clickable links to pages that support the response. The features are rooted in Google's core ranking and quality systems 3.
Eligibility is simple. A page must be indexed and eligible to show in Search with a snippet, and Google lists no additional technical requirements 2. You need no special schema, AI text file or new markup 2. Google adds that indexing and serving are never certain 2.
AI Overviews and AI Mode may use query fan-out, which means issuing several related searches across subtopics and data sources 2. The model can then find supporting pages that would not rank for your customer's exact words. See what query fan-out is.
What Google does not publish is how it ranks eligible pages against each other. It also says no third-party tool has access to its internal ranking or AI systems 3. Everything below on selection is therefore outside evidence.
Do AI Overviews just copy the top 10 results?
Not any more, according to one large study. Ahrefs found about 38% of URLs cited in AI Overviews also ranked in the top 10 for the same query, against about 76% in its July 2025 study. The newer study covered 863,000 keyword results and 4 million cited URLs 4.
Ahrefs suggests query fan-out may explain the drop, and notes that AI Overviews moved to Gemini 3 in January 2026 4. Google's CEO confirmed an upgrade of AI Overviews to Gemini 3 in February 2026 6. Ahrefs also says its method changed, with a larger sample and better parsing, so the two figures are not a clean before-and-after 4.
Which sites get cited most? In Ahrefs' September 2026 snapshot of more than 3 million US queries, YouTube had a 22.9% mention share among top sources and Reddit 18.5% 16. Those shares are relative to the top sources only, and cover US queries only.
Our reading: ranking for your main phrase helps, but it is not the only way in. A focused page that answers one sub-question may be cited even if it does not rank for the headline query. That is an inference, not a finding.
| Rank of the cited URL | Share of cited URLs |
|---|---|
| Top 10 | 37.9% |
| 11 to 100 | 31.2% |
| Beyond the top 100 | 31.0% |
What did two AI tools use as sources for this question?
We gave the question 'what are Google AI Overviews and how do they pick sources' to Gemini 2.5 Flash and to a Claude agent with a web search tool on 20 October 2026. Gemini ran 2 searches and the agent recorded 3 7. The runs listed 17 sites with none on both lists; only Gemini's list held Google's own domains, and the rest were mostly SEO software or agency blogs by their names, which is why this page cites Google's documents directly. One run per tool on one day, with an older model than the one behind AI Overviews 6, is an illustration only.
| Tool | Search it ran | What it seems to be after |
|---|---|---|
| Gemini | Google AI Overviews explained | A plain definition |
| Gemini | how Google AI Overviews select sources | The selection question |
| Claude | Google AI Overviews how sources are selected | The selection question, worded differently |
| Claude | AI Overviews citations overlap top 10 organic study | Evidence on overlap with rankings |
| Claude | Google AI Overviews query fan-out explained | The mechanism behind the overlap |
How often do AI Overviews appear?
It depends on whose data you read, because each study measures a different set of searches. The table lists three. None of them is the one true figure.
The type of search is shifting. Semrush found informational queries made up 91.3% of AI Overview searches in January 2025 and 57.1% by October, as commercial and transactional queries grew 9. Semrush sells AI Overview tracking, so it has a commercial interest.
Industry matters most. In Conductor's data, health care searches showed an AI Overview 48.75% of the time and real estate searches 4.48% 10. Conductor also sells AEO tools, and its AI Overview window was only four weeks.
| Study | Sample and period | What it found |
|---|---|---|
| Pew Research Center 8 | 900 US adults' browsing, March 2025, 68,879 unique searches | 18% of searches produced an AI summary |
| Semrush 9 | 10M+ keywords, January to November 2025 | 6.49% in January, 24.61% in July, 15.69% in November |
| Conductor 10 | About 21.9M US searches, 15 September to 12 October 2025 | 25.11% overall, from 48.75% in health care to 4.48% in real estate |
Do AI Overviews reduce clicks to websites?
The evidence points both ways, so measure your own site. Pew tracked 900 US adults in March 2025. They clicked a regular result in 8% of visits when an AI summary appeared and 15% when it did not, and clicked a link inside the summary in 1% of visits 8.
Ahrefs found the top-ranking page had a 58% lower average click-through rate on keywords with an AI Overview, comparing December 2023 with December 2025. Ahrefs calls this correlation, uses desktop data and relies on a forecast baseline 11.
Google disagrees on the overall picture. In August 2025 its head of Search wrote that total organic clicks from Search to websites were relatively stable year on year and that quality clicks were up. Google called third-party reports of dramatic declines inaccurate 12.
Both can be true. A page can lose clicks on one set of queries while a whole site holds steady. That is our reading, so check your own numbers.
Can you control whether your content appears?
Partly. Google's preview controls limit what Search can use. The nosnippet rule also stops content being used as a direct input for AI Overviews and AI Mode, and max-snippet limits how much can be used 15.
Google's AI features page lists nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet and noindex as ways to limit what Search shows 2, but only the nosnippet and max-snippet rules are described as applying to AI Overviews and AI Mode 15. A page must be indexed to be a supporting link, so noindex keeps it out 2.
Blocking has a cost. Pages hidden from AI features are also hidden from a growing part of search. In our view most small businesses gain more by being cited than by opting out, but your risk may differ, for example with paid content.
How do you check AI Overviews for your own queries?
Run a 30-minute check on your own top queries. Export your 20 top queries from Search Console, search each in a private window, and fill in one row per query.
Repeat it monthly. One look proves little, because AI Overviews are probabilistic and their citations change with each query 4.
- Query: ______
- Date and device: ______
- AI Overview shown? yes / no
- Is our site linked? yes / no. Which page: ______
- Who is linked instead: ______
- What do they have that we lack (answer, price, table, proof, video)? ______
- Action and owner: ______
What do people get wrong about AI Overviews?
'They only show for informational questions.' Informational queries fell from 91.3% to 57.1% of triggering queries between January and October 2025 in Semrush's data 9.
'I need special markup or an llms.txt file.' Google says AI features need no special markup 2, and that llms.txt files neither help nor harm Search visibility 3. See what llms.txt is.
'If I rank first, I am safe.' Ranking helps, but in Ahrefs' study roughly 62% of cited URLs were outside the top 10 4.
How can you use this knowledge this week?
Make sure your key pages are indexed, answer the question first, and cover the sub-questions around them. For more tactics, see How to Get Cited in Google AI Overviews.
- Check that each money page is indexed and shows a snippet in Google. Fix that before anything else 2.
- Open the generative AI performance report in Search Console and note your top pages by impressions 14.
- List five sub-questions per key page with the free Query Fan-Out Explorer, and check each has a clear answer.
- Put the answer in the first sentence under each heading. The Answer Block Checker tests this.
- Keep Business Profile and Merchant Center details current. Google lists this as a best practice that still pays off for AI features 2.
- Do not publish a page for every wording. Google says separate content for every variation, mainly to manipulate AI answers, violates its scaled content abuse policy 3.

Do I need to rank in the top 10 to be cited?
No. Ahrefs found about 38% of cited URLs ranked in the top 10 in its March 2026 study, down from about 76% in July 2025, though the method changed between the two 4. Ranking helps, but a focused page can be cited without it.
