How to Get Cited in Google Gemini

The short answer

Gemini answers some questions with Google Search results and cites the pages it uses. To get cited, make sure your pages are indexed and eligible in Google Search, do not block Google-Extended if you want grounding, publish answer-first pages on your own site, keep your brand facts accurate, and test ten real prompts each month. Google publishes no Gemini-specific ranking list.

  • Google says some Gemini responses are grounded on Search results, so Search visibility is the first gate.
  • Blocking Google-Extended does not remove you from Search, but it can stop your content being used for Gemini grounding.
  • Studies disagree on what Gemini cites. In Profound's data, brand-owned sites made up 69% of Gemini citations.
  • Gemini sent far fewer visits than ChatGPT in Ahrefs' data, so judge success by mentions first and visits second.

How does Gemini decide which sources to cite?

Gemini does not cite from a fixed list. Google says some Gemini responses are grounded on Search results 3. Grounding means the model checks live search results before it writes its answer.

Google's developer documentation describes the steps. The model reads the prompt and decides whether a search would improve the answer. If so, it generates one or more search queries, runs them, and writes a response built on the results, with URL citations attached 2. One prompt can therefore trigger several separate searches.

Google does not publish how it ranks sources for the Gemini app, and we found no such list in the pages we read. That is a real gap. Everything in this guide is therefore a mix of Google's documented rules and outside studies, and we say which is which.

Do it step by step

0 of 8 done0%

  1. List the ten questions a buyer would ask Gemini before choosing you. Use plain wording, including one that names your category and city, and one that compares you with a rival. Save them in the prompt log from the templates.

Tip: Take wording from sales calls and support emails, not from keyword tools.

  2. Paste each prompt into the Gemini app, ideally in a fresh chat. Record whether you are named, whether your site is linked, and who is cited instead. Run each prompt three times, because answers vary 7.

Tip: Log the date. You will compare against it in a month.

  3. In Google Search Console, use URL Inspection on your top five pages and check they are indexed. Google says a page must be indexed and snippet-eligible to appear as a supporting link in its AI features 1. Fix noindex tags, blocked paths and login walls first.

Tip: Search for a distinctive sentence from the page in quotation marks as a quick second check.

  4. Open yourdomain.com/robots.txt and look for Google-Extended. If you want Gemini to ground answers on your content, make sure it is not disallowed 4. Use the robots.txt template, and note that you cannot confirm Google-Extended from server logs 4.

  5. For each prompt, pick or create the page that answers it. Put the answer in the first sentence, then the evidence, with a named source and a date for every number. Check each section still makes sense if lifted out alone.

Tip: Start with the two prompts where a rival is cited and you are not.

  6. Make one clear About page, one pricing or service page, and a location page for each place you serve. Gemini cited brand-owned sites more than other engines did in Profound's and Yext's data 67. Use the Organization JSON-LD template only for facts that already appear on the page 1.

  7. Check your Google Business Profile, review pages and major directories for the same facts as your site. Where sources disagree, fix the wrong one. An engine that finds two prices may cite neither.

Tip: Use the same business name, address and phone number everywhere.

  8. Repeat the baseline once a month with the same prompts and wording. Add new rows to the log instead of overwriting. A change in mentions across at least three of ten prompts is worth acting on; one prompt is noise.

robots.txt: keep Gemini grounding open

Replace the Disallow lines with your own private paths. A crawler follows only its most specific group, so the private paths must be repeated in each group. To opt out of training and grounding instead, change the Google-Extended rule to Disallow: / and accept the trade-off . Google-Extended does not affect Search inclusion .

Google says no special markup is needed for its AI features and that markup should match visible text . The free Schema Generator builds a version for your details.

Do you need to rank in Google Search first?

Almost certainly yes. For AI Overviews and AI Mode, Google says a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet 1. Google does not make the same statement for the Gemini app, but the app does use Search results, so the same hygiene is the safest starting point.

Google also says there are no extra technical requirements, no special optimisations and no special schema.org markup needed for those AI features 1. Be wary of anyone selling a secret Gemini tag.

Rankings are not the whole story. Ahrefs studied 15,000 long-tail prompts and found only about 12% of links cited by ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot appeared in Google's top 10 for the same prompt 8. Being indexed is the entry ticket. Being cited depends on whether your passage answers the sub-question the model searched for.

Should you block Google-Extended?

Not if you want Gemini to use your content. Google-Extended is a robots.txt token that lets publishers manage whether crawled content is used to train future Gemini models and for grounding in Gemini Apps 4. Google adds that it does not affect inclusion in Google Search and is not a ranking signal 4.

So there is a trade-off. Blocking it keeps your content out of training, but it may also take you out of Gemini grounding. Allowing it keeps the door open for citations. Decide on purpose, and write the choice down.

Google-Extended has no separate user agent string, so it will not appear as its own crawler in your server logs 4. You cannot confirm it from logs. You can only confirm that your robots.txt file does not block it.

What kinds of sites does Gemini cite?

Profound analysed about 11.84 billion citations from 16 April to 16 July 2026 across eight AI models. It found brand-owned sites made up 69% of Gemini's citations, against 47% for ChatGPT, which Profound describes as among the least brand-reliant of the major answer engines 6.

Yext found a similar pattern for local questions. Across 491,972 local query cases from February to August 2026, Gemini cited brand sites more than the other engines did 7. Yext also found that when all four engines agreed on a top local business, that business's own website was cited in 91% of cases 7.

Our reading: for Gemini, your own site matters more than it does for engines that lean on forums. Both studies come from vendors that sell visibility tools, and neither shows why Gemini behaves this way. Treat them as a reason to fix your own pages first, not as a rule.

What two 2026 studies say about Gemini's source mix
StudyDataFinding for Gemini
Profound 611.84 billion citations, 16 April to 16 July 2026Brand-owned sites are 69% of citations
Yext 7491,972 local query cases, February to August 2026Gemini cited brand sites most; the winner's own site was cited in 91% of cases when all four engines agreed
Ahrefs 815,000 long-tail prompts, 2025About 12% of cited links in Google's top 10, shared with ChatGPT and Copilot

What should you publish so Gemini can quote you?

Publish one page per question, and put the answer in the first sentence. The model runs sub-searches, so each page needs to match one clear sub-question, such as a price, a definition or a comparison 2. Our answer-first intro guide shows the pattern, and the free Answer Block Checker tests an opening paragraph.

Give your brand facts a home that you control: who you are, where you work, what you charge, who runs the business. Yext found that location pages had the largest association with being named, a 2.9 times lift, ahead of cover photos, descriptions and claimed profiles 7. Yext describes this as an association, not proof of cause.

Keep structured data honest. Google says it should match the visible text, and that no special markup is required 1. See how to add Organization and Person schema for a safe version.

What did an AI assistant search for when we asked this question?

On 20 October 2026 we asked a Claude agent with web search to research 'how to get my brand mentioned in Google Gemini'. It ran three searches: one on getting a brand mentioned in Gemini, one on studies of Gemini citation and ranking factors, and one on tools that track Gemini brand visibility.

That is one run on one engine. Gemini's own sub-searches may differ. We use these three angles to shape the sections above: how to get mentioned, what the studies say, and how to measure.

How do you check whether Gemini cites you?

Ask Gemini your ten buyer questions and read the sources. Record whether your brand is named, whether your domain is linked, and who is cited instead. Answers vary between runs, so repeat each prompt a few times and note the pattern, not one result 7.

Tools can automate this. Semrush says its Prompt Tracking supports ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Gemini, covers 25 prompts on its entry plan, and starts collecting only when you create a campaign, with no backfill 10. That is a vendor statement, and we did not test the tool.

Expect small visits at first. Ahrefs counted about 3.5 million visitors from all AI chatbots in March 2026, 0.28% of total web traffic in its sample of 74,752 sites, with Gemini around 230,000 of them 9. Gemini's app is large, with 950 million monthly active users reported by Alphabet in July 2026 5, but many answers send no click.

Which mistakes cost the most time?

The first is blocking Google-Extended by copy-pasting a long block list without reading it 4. The second is chasing a Gemini trick instead of fixing indexing, thin pages and unclear facts 1. The third is judging success from one prompt on one day.

A fourth is ignoring the rest of the web. Yext found that Anthropic's engine cited review sites far more than the others did, which shows each engine has its own habits 7. A page that wins in Gemini may not win elsewhere.

When is Gemini not worth the effort?

If you do not rank in Google at all, fix that first, because Gemini grounds on Search results. If your buyers never use AI to research, Gemini is a low priority. Check your own analytics and ask new customers how they found you before spending time. Google Search work still pays off first, because Gemini draws on it 3.

If you already rank and have clear answer pages, the extra work for Gemini is mostly measurement. Spend an afternoon testing prompts before you commit to a programme. This eight-step checklist suits a small business with no SEO team, and Gemini optimization for a small business is mostly indexing and clear pages.

What an AI assistant searches when it answers this

We gave the question below to AI search tools and recorded the web searches they ran behind the scenes. This is called query fan-out. Each phrase is a page you could publish to be found and cited.

The prompt

“how to get my brand mentioned in Google Gemini”

The searches it ran
  • get brand mentioned in Google Gemini
  • Gemini AI citations ranking factors study
  • Gemini brand visibility tracking tools

Observed October 20, 2026 using Claude web search. Claude agents were told to run 6 to 10 searches, so that count is our setting, not Claude's own choice. Assistants differ and change often, so treat this as a sample, not a rule. See how we collect it.

Frequently asked questions

Can I submit my site to Gemini?

No submission form exists that we found. Google says there are no additional requirements to appear in its AI features beyond being indexed and eligible in Search 1. Make sure your pages are indexed, then improve the pages.

Does Gemini use the same sources as Google AI Overviews?

Not necessarily. Both draw on Google Search, and Google describes query fan-out, issuing several related searches, for AI Overviews and AI Mode 1. For the Gemini app, Google says only that some responses are grounded on Search results 3. Test Gemini separately.

Will blocking Google-Extended hurt my Google rankings?

Google says it does not affect inclusion in Google Search and is not a ranking signal 4. It does govern use for Gemini training and grounding, so blocking may reduce your chance of being used in Gemini answers.

How fast will I see results?

We do not know, and nobody publishes a reliable timeline for Gemini. Pages must be indexed first, which can take days or weeks. Re-test monthly and judge by the pattern across prompts rather than one result.

Is there a tool to track Gemini mentions?

Yes, some do. Semrush says Prompt Tracking supports Gemini, with 25 prompts on its entry plan and no backfill before you start a campaign 10. A spreadsheet and ten prompts is a fine free start. See the prompt list guide.
