What AI SEO Cannot Do

The short answer

AI SEO cannot guarantee a ranking or a mention, force an assistant to name you, create demand that does not exist, fix a weak offer or sales process, or be measured perfectly. Google says no one can guarantee a number-one ranking. 1 AI SEO improves your odds of being found and chosen. Anyone who promises more is selling something.

  • Google says no one can guarantee a number-one ranking, and that anyone promising first place is a reason to look elsewhere. 1
  • The median AI citation loses half its share in 11 days, so a mention today is not a result you keep. 3
  • AI platforms sent about 1.08% of visits to 1,215 large US sites in 2025, so clicks from AI are still a small share for those sites. 7
  • Attribution is incomplete: many AI-influenced visits show up as direct or organic traffic. 6

What can AI SEO not do?

It cannot promise outcomes, control what an AI says, make people want what you sell, repair a poor offer or follow up your leads. It also cannot be measured perfectly or finished once. The sections below cover each limit, the evidence and what to do about it.

We sell AI SEO, so this page works against our own interest. We think a buyer who knows the limits is a better client. Our terms say we do not guarantee rankings, citations or lead counts, because search engines and AI models are third parties.

See how sales follow-up changes the same traffic

Keep the visits fixed and change only the close rate. The same visitors are worth very different amounts depending on how well you answer and follow up.

What this adds up to

About 1.2 customers a month and $3,000 in revenue. After a monthly cost of $1,500, that leaves $1,500.

How it is worked out

  • Enquiries = visits × enquiry rate.
  • Customers = enquiries × close rate.
  • Revenue = customers × average customer value.
  • Revenue minus cost = revenue − monthly cost.
  • Return multiple = revenue ÷ monthly cost.
  • Visits to break even = monthly cost ÷ revenue per visit. Revenue per visit = enquiry rate × close rate × customer value.

Why can nobody guarantee rankings or AI mentions?

Because the systems belong to someone else. Google's guidance says no one can guarantee a number-one ranking and that an SEO who promises first place is a reason to find someone else. It also suggests asking what results to expect, in what timeframe and how success is measured. 1

AI answers are less predictable still. Google says even a well-built page has no guarantee of being crawled, indexed or served. 2 And the sources AI picks do not follow rankings closely: Ahrefs found that, on average, only about 12% of links cited by four AI assistants sat in Google's top 10 for the same long-tail prompt (about 8% for ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot). 4

A fair promise is about work: what will be researched, written, fixed and reported each month. A promise about a number you do not control is a warning sign.

Can you force an AI assistant to recommend you?

No, and attempts to do so backfire. Microsoft found over 50 unique prompts from 31 companies in 14 industries that hid 'remember this brand' instructions behind 'Summarize with AI' buttons. It describes the practice as a risk to users, and it is building defences against it. 5

Honest effort has limits too. In an Ahrefs test of 34 of its own pages, 43% of answers that cited a conference page skipped Ahrefs' conference and recommended competitors from the same page. 8 A citation is not a recommendation.

What works is being a believable answer: accurate pages, real reviews, outside mentions and clear facts about who you are. That raises the odds. It never makes a mention certain.

Can AI SEO create demand that is not there?

No. It puts you in front of people who already ask. If a few dozen people a month ask your question, perfect visibility caps your leads. See why your market changes your results for how demand and deal value shape the ceiling.

AI clicks are also still a small share of traffic. Conductor measured AI referrals at 1.08% of traffic across 1,215 enterprise domains from May to September 2025, with a range from 0.25% to 2.80% by industry. 7 That sample is large US companies in 2025, so your own share may differ. It means the value of AI visibility often comes from being named and remembered, not only from clicks.

Where demand is thin, the better move can be a different channel such as outbound, partnerships or paid ads. Our AI SEO versus paid ads comparison helps you weigh them.

Can AI SEO fix a weak offer or a slow sales team?

No. Being found makes a good offer easier to buy and a bad offer easier to reject. Check price, proof and positioning before you buy visibility.

Follow-up matters because buyers move fast once they are ready. 6sense's survey of about 4,000 buyers found the first vendor a buyer spoke to won 77% of the time, and the winning vendor was on the Day One shortlist 95% of the time. 9 So a slow reply risks losing the first conversation.

Set an owner and a reply time for every form, call and chat before you publish a single page. Then use the calculator below to see how the close rate changes the value of the same traffic.

Why can't AI SEO be measured perfectly?

Because much of the influence happens out of sight. Ahrefs notes that some AI platforms strip referrer data, and that buyers often see a brand in an answer and then search its name, which analytics files as organic or direct. 6 Self-reported attribution helps, and Ahrefs says it is 'by no means perfect'.

So you will work with partial evidence. Use three views together: prompt tracking for mentions, analytics for visits and enquiries, and a 'How did you hear about us?' question on every form. Report them as a range, not a single number.

Is AI SEO a one-time project?

No. Profound followed 883,000 cited pages over a year and found the median page lost half its citation share within 11 days of its peak. Only about 22% of page-engine pairs lasted longer, with median half-lives of 27 to 29 days. 3 Profound sells AI visibility tools, so read the exact days as indicative.

Pages age as well. Prices, rules and product details change, and an out-of-date page still gets quoted. The Ahrefs author advises keeping content updated for this reason. 8

Plan for upkeep from the start. A realistic programme refreshes old pages, adds new ones and earns new mentions each month. See how long AI SEO takes for the timing evidence.

What can Chalk Labs honestly claim?

Chalk Labs reports that Meru Trophy, a local trophy shop in Bengaluru, reached 27,300 Google clicks over 16 months, and that the personal site shilikajain.com ranked first for one narrow phrase within a month. Both are search results, not AI citation results, and neither reports revenue.

Those cases show the method can work in two settings. They do not show it will work in yours. We run an AI SEO programme for the price listed on our proposal page, commit to the work, report every result and do not guarantee outcomes.

Frequently asked questions

Is my brand certain to appear in ChatGPT if I do AI SEO?

No. Nobody controls what ChatGPT says. Good pages, outside mentions and clear facts raise your odds, but answers vary by prompt, by engine and by day. Treat anyone who promises a mention as unreliable, in line with Google's advice on promised rankings. 1

Can AI SEO replace paid ads?

Not fully. It builds slower and carries no guaranteed volume, while paid ads buy visibility on demand. Ads can fill the gap while organic work matures. The comparison depends on cost per lead, deal value and how long you can wait.

Will AI SEO work if my site is slow or blocked to crawlers?

Not until you fix access. Google says a page must be indexed and eligible to appear with a snippet to be used in its AI features, and even then there is no guarantee. 2 Check robots rules and rendering first.

Can I trust an agency that shows only wins?

Be careful. Ask for the timeframe, the measurement method and what the numbers do not show. Google suggests asking an SEO for examples of past work and checking references from past clients. 1 Cases without revenue or time frames are partial evidence.

What should I expect in the first three months?

Mostly groundwork: crawl access, fixed facts, new pages and a baseline of your AI mentions. Early signs may be indexing, impressions and first citations. Enquiries often lag. Sources give ranges of months, not days, and no promise holds for every business.
