AI SEO for Hotels and Hospitality

The short answer

A hotel gets recommended by ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews when an assistant can confirm its location, rooms, price and reviews from several sources that agree, and finds a page that answers the traveller's exact question. Build a strong direct site, keep listings accurate, and publish honest local guides. Google says no special markup is required 1.

  • Google says a page needs to be indexed and snippet-eligible to be cited in AI features. No special AI file is required. 1
  • We found no reliable data on how much of AI hotel advice comes from booking sites versus hotel sites, so we do not state a share.
  • Local AI tools name few places per answer: 4.1 for ChatGPT and 2.5 for AI Overviews on average. 4
  • In the US, hotels that show a price must show the total including mandatory fees. Check your own market's rule too. 6
  • Google's profile guidelines list hotels and motels among businesses that should not set hours, and a hotel restaurant needs its own profile. 5
Why it matters in Hotels and hospitality
  • A trip is a considered, higher-ticket purchase in our reading, so travellers compare many options.
  • BrightLocal found 45% of surveyed US consumers used generative AI for local recommendations 9.
  • AI tools name only a few places per answer, so the gap between named and not named is large 4.
  • Hotels control their own pages and listings, which are a large share of local AI citations 4.

What buyers in Hotels and hospitality ask AI

  • What they want
Shortlist small hotels within walking distance of the historic centre
    What to publish

How it is worked out

  • Enquiries = visits × enquiry rate.
  • Customers = enquiries × close rate.
  • Revenue = customers × average customer value.
  • Revenue minus cost = revenue − monthly cost.
  • Return multiple = revenue ÷ monthly cost.
  • Visits to break even = monthly cost ÷ revenue per visit. Revenue per visit = enquiry rate × close rate × customer value.

How do travellers use AI to choose a hotel?

Evidence specific to hotels is thin. We found no published study that measures how many travellers use ChatGPT or AI Overviews to pick a hotel, or how often those tools name independent hotels over big booking sites. Any firm claim would be a guess.

General figures exist. BrightLocal's 2026 survey of 1,002 US consumers found 45% used generative AI for local business recommendations, up from 6% a year earlier 9. Pew tracked 900 US adults in March 2025 and found people clicked a regular result link in 8% of visits to Google pages with an AI summary, against 15% without one 2. Both cover all topics, not travel alone.

A hotel that is not named in the answer may not get a visit from a traveller who never opens the full results.

Which sources do AI engines use for hotels?

No study we opened breaks hotel citations out cleanly. BrightLocal analysed 1,967,762 AI citations for 1,355 locations in the US, UK and Australia. Tripadvisor made up 1.79% of citations overall and was cited for 32.55% of businesses, while hospitality and travel was only 1.12% of the locations and had no citation breakdown 3.

In BrightLocal's second study of local AI searches, business websites made up 42% of citations and Google Business Profile 28.5% 4. That mix is across all local categories. In Ahrefs' September 2026 Google AI Overviews data, Tripadvisor appeared at 0.6%, and online travel agencies such as Booking.com and Expedia did not appear in the top 50 13.

So own-site pages and an accurate Google profile look like the controllable base. Treat any claim about booking-site dominance with caution until you see data.

What do travellers ask AI, and what should you publish for each question?

Travellers ask for a short list, then add one detail at a time. Our seed question is 'best boutique hotel in Lisbon near the old town'. We did not run it through our fan-out tool, so the sub-questions below are modelled, not observed.

Each one is a page, or a fix to a listing. A traveller asking about noise wants to know what faces the street, not a general promise of calm.

Modelled fan-out for one traveller question (not observed)
  • Prompt: best boutique hotel in Lisbon near the old town
  • Likely searches: boutique hotels Lisbon Alfama
  • Likely searches: where to stay in Lisbon first time old town
  • Likely searches: Lisbon boutique hotel quiet rooms reviews
  • Likely searches: Lisbon boutique hotel with breakfast and rooftop
  • Likely searches: Lisbon old town hotel walk from metro
  • Page to publish: 'Staying near Lisbon's old town', with walking times, street-noise notes by room type and how to arrive

What should a hotel publish first?

Publish a page per room type first, with size, bed setup, view, floor, noise notes, amenities and photos. Add a location page with walking times to named landmarks and public transport stops, since location is likely the first filter, in our reading.

Next, add a plain policies page: check-in times, cancellation, deposits, pets, accessibility and extra fees. Then write guides only you can write, such as a first-time visitor's day in the neighbourhood you sit in, with real venues and honest advice.

Yext's study of 491,972 local query-market cases (February to August 2026) found profiles with location pages were named by AI engines 2.9 times as often as those without, with a cover photo 2.8 times, a description 2.3 times and schema markup 2.1 times. Yext says it does not claim one field alone causes selection 10.

What price and review rules apply to hotels?

In the US, the FTC's rule on unfair or deceptive fees took effect on 12 May 2025 and covers hotels, motels, inns and short-term rentals. A hotel that shows a price must show the total price upfront, including mandatory fees, with the total the most prominent figure 6. The FTC's example is a $199 nightly rate with a mandatory $39 daily resort fee, where the total must include the fee 6.

Government charges and optional extras may be left out of the total price under the rule's definition 7. A Lisbon hotel is outside US rules, and we did not research EU or Portuguese pricing rules for this page. Check your own market's rules.

Review rules are broad. Google bans offering payment, discounts or free goods or services for reviews 11. The FTC reviews rule took effect on 21 October 2024, and courts can impose civil penalties for knowing violations 12.

How should a hotel set up its Google listing and booking links?

Follow Google's profile rules closely. Use the fewest categories that describe the core business, and for a motel with a pool the guidance lists 'Motel' as correct and 'Hotel' and 'Swimming Pool' as incorrect 5. Google's guidelines list hotels and motels among businesses that should not set hours, and a restaurant inside a hotel should have its own profile 5.

Paid hotel prices on Google run through a separate route. Google says advertisers supply room prices and availability through a feed, either directly or with an integration partner, and it highly recommends a partner 8. That page covers paid campaigns, so we do not claim it affects AI answers.

Whichever route you use, keep the price and room facts on your own page identical to the feed and listings.

How do you measure whether this is working?

Use a fixed prompt list, checked on a schedule, and log who is named. BrightLocal found a business reappeared in only about half of repeat attempts on ChatGPT and AI Mode, and the average ChatGPT answer named 4.1 businesses 4. So one check proves nothing.

Run each prompt three times on two or more AI tools, and vary the travel dates and the wording. Ask guests at booking and check-in how they found you, with an 'AI assistant' option, and compare direct bookings month to month.

What have we done in hospitality, and what have we not?

We have not published results for a hotel. No hotel or travel work has been published by us. Our method (query research, answer pages, technical readiness, measurement) has been applied to a Bengaluru trophy shop and a personal site, measured in Google search results.

A trophy shop and a boutique hotel are very different businesses, so treat that as a method, not a promise. We do not guarantee citations, rankings or bookings.

Your first 90 days

Days 1-30

  • Run 5 core prompts on two AI tools, three runs each, and save the log.
  • Check name, address, categories and photos on Google, Tripadvisor and each booking site.
  • List every mandatory fee and show it in the displayed total price.
  • Add an AI option to the 'How did you hear about us?' booking field.

Days 31-60

  • Publish a page for every room type with size, view and noise notes.
  • Publish the location page with walking times and arrival steps.
  • Publish a plain policies page covering cancellation, pets and access.
  • Add markup that matches the visible page.

Days 61-90

  • Publish a neighbourhood guide and a sample itinerary.
  • Ask recent guests for honest reviews, with no reward and no filtering.
  • Rerun the prompt log and compare it with day one.
  • Update any page that lost clicks or citations.

The first pages to publish

  1. Room type pages. Each answers fit and noise questions with facts an assistant can quote.
  2. Location and getting-here page. Location is likely the first filter in hotel questions, in our reading.
  3. Policies page. It answers cancellation, pet and access questions plainly.
  4. Neighbourhood guide. It matches 'where to stay' prompts with real local detail.
  5. Amenities and dining page. It covers pool, breakfast and bar questions with hours.
  6. Direct-booking benefits page. It states only perks you can honour, next to a total price 6.
  7. Events and groups page. It serves group and wedding enquiries with capacity and terms.

Trust signals and risks

What AI looks for

  • Accurate address, categories and photos on Google 5.
  • A total price that includes mandatory fees 6.
  • Recent, honest reviews with replies 11.
  • Room pages with real photos and honest noise notes.
  • Clear policies on cancellation, pets and accessibility.
  • Local guides written by named staff.

What can go wrong

  • Hidden or late-disclosed mandatory fees 6.
  • Wrong categories or hours on a Google profile 5.
  • Incentivised or gated reviews 1112.
  • Room facts that differ across your site, feed and listings.

Frequently asked questions

Do hotels need special markup to appear in AI Overviews?

No. Google says you do not need new machine-readable files, AI text files or special markup. A page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet 1. Markup can still help, and it should match what travellers see on the page.

Do online travel agencies dominate AI hotel answers?

We do not know. No study we opened gives a reliable share of AI hotel advice drawn from booking sites versus hotel sites, and the hotel category was a tiny slice of BrightLocal's dataset 3. Track which sources appear for your own prompts.

Should my hotel list opening hours on Google?

Google's guidelines list indoor lodging such as hotels and motels among businesses that should not list hours 5. A restaurant, cafe or bar inside the hotel should have its own profile with its own category 5.

Do I have to include the resort fee in my price?

In the US, yes for mandatory fees. The FTC rule, effective 12 May 2025, requires hotels that show a price to show the total, including mandatory fees, as the most prominent figure 6. Outside the US, check your local rules.

How long before I see results?

We cannot give a reliable timeline for hotels, because we have no published results in this field. AI answers also vary between runs, so track trends over months 4. We do not guarantee any citation or booking.
