AI SEO for Restaurants and Cafes
A restaurant or cafe gets recommended by ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews when an assistant can confirm its location, hours, menu and reviews from several places that agree. In one BrightLocal study, Google Business Profile supplied 45.2% of restaurant citations and Yelp 21.8% 3. Keep those listings and a text-based menu accurate before anything else.
- In BrightLocal's data, Google Business Profile supplied 45.2% of restaurant citations, Yelp 21.8%, Tripadvisor 7% and OpenTable 6.6%. 3
- AI tools name only a few places per answer: an average of 4.1 for ChatGPT and 2.5 for AI Overviews in local tests. 4
- Put the menu on the page as text, with dietary notes, so an assistant can answer 'vegan options' without guessing.
- Google asks restaurants to list dine-in hours first and bans incentives for reviews. Keep both right. 59
- Answers vary between runs, so measure a set of prompts over months, not one check. 4
How does a restaurant get recommended by ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews?
A restaurant gets recommended when an AI system can confirm the same facts about it from several sources, and those facts fit the diner's request. Here 'AI' means ChatGPT, Google's AI Overviews (AI-written summaries above some results) and AI Mode (Google's chat-style search).
Google says a page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet, with no extra technical requirements and no special AI files 1. It also says these features may run several related searches across subtopics, known as query fan-out 1.
For brunch, fan-out turns one question into searches on neighbourhood, vegan dishes, wait times and reviews. Your listing, your menu page and your reviews each answer one of them.
- Diners decide fast and locally, so a short AI list can send the whole table to one venue.
- BrightLocal found 45% of surveyed US consumers used generative AI for local business recommendations 11.
- Listings dominate restaurant citations, and a business controls them 3.
- AI tools name only a few places, so the gap between named and not named is large 4.
How do diners use AI to choose where to eat?
More diners are trying it. BrightLocal's 2026 survey of 1,002 US consumers found 45% used ChatGPT or other generative AI tools for local business recommendations, up from 6% a year earlier 11. The survey covers all local businesses, not restaurants alone.
Pew tracked 900 US adults in March 2025. People clicked a regular result link in 8% of visits to Google pages with an AI summary, against 15% without one 2.
A diner choosing a brunch spot wants a short list fast. The place named in the answer gets the visit.
Which sources do AI engines use for restaurants?
They lean heavily on listings. BrightLocal analysed 1,967,762 citations from Google AI Overviews, AI Mode and ChatGPT for 1,355 locations in the US, UK and Australia. Among 100,334 restaurant citations, Google Business Profile supplied 45.2%, Yelp 21.8%, Tripadvisor 7% and OpenTable 6.6% 3.
Yext's study of 6.8 million citations (July and August 2025) found that for food service, listings were the largest single source at 41.6%, and reviews and social content supplied 13.3%, the highest share of any industry 7. It does not break out restaurants. A second BrightLocal study found business websites made up 42% of all local AI citations, with Google Business Profile at 28.5% 4.
| Source | Share of restaurant citations | What to do with it |
|---|---|---|
| Google Business Profile | 45.2% | Keep name, hours, menu link, photos and categories exact |
| Yelp | 21.8% | Claim the page, fix details, reply to reviews |
| Tripadvisor | 7% | Claim the page, add menu and photos |
| OpenTable | 6.6% | Keep availability and policies current if you use it |
What do diners ask AI, and what should you publish for each question?
Diners ask for a short list, then narrow it with one detail at a time. Our seed question is 'best brunch spot in Brooklyn with vegan options'. We did not run it through our fan-out tool, so the sub-questions below are modelled, not observed.
Each one maps to a page or a listing field. A diner asking about vegan options wants dish names, not a promise of 'plenty of choice'.
- Prompt: best brunch spot in Brooklyn with vegan options
- Likely searches: vegan brunch Brooklyn
- Likely searches: Williamsburg brunch vegan menu
- Likely searches: brunch Brooklyn no wait reservations
- Likely searches: brunch spots Brooklyn outdoor seating
- Likely searches: vegan brunch Brooklyn reddit
- Page to publish: 'Vegan brunch menu', listing every dish, price, allergens and whether it can be made vegan on request
What should a restaurant publish first?
Publish your menu as readable text on a page, not only as a PDF or photo. In our reading, an assistant can quote text more reliably than an image, though no study confirms it. Test it: ask ChatGPT about one of your dishes in a new chat, and if it cannot name the dish or price, the text is not being read. Group dishes, add prices and mark vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free and nut notes next to each dish.
Then add a visit page with address, neighbourhood, parking or transit, booking method, group size limits and seating options. Add a short page for private dining and events if you take them.
Chain restaurants with 20 or more locations must show calories on menus under the FDA's menu labeling rule 10. Smaller venues should still be clear about allergens and ingredients.
What do Google's listing and review rules require?
Google wants a business name that reflects the real-world name, without taglines, service descriptions or location details added 5. For hours, restaurants should list dine-in hours when they have them, then takeout, then drive-through, and delivery only as a last resort 5. A restaurant inside a hotel should have its own profile 5.
Google's local ranking rests mainly on relevance, distance and prominence, and prominence depends partly on review count and links to your site 12. In BrightLocal's tests, about 53% to 59% of AI picks fell within 5 km of the search point (the article's figures vary slightly) 4. Proximity is hard to change, so complete data matters.
Reviews have rules. Google bans offering payment, discounts or free goods for a review and bans selectively soliciting positive ones 9. The FTC reviews rule took effect on 21 October 2024, and courts can impose civil penalties for knowing violations 8.
Should a restaurant add structured data?
It can help, but it is not required for AI features 1. Google's local business markup needs a name and address, and recommends fields such as menu, opening hours, price range and cuisine served 6. Google also says it does not guarantee that features using structured data will show 6.
If you add markup, make it match the visible page. Google lists matching structured data to visible text as a worthwhile practice for AI features 1.
How do you measure whether this is working?
Use a fixed prompt list, checked on a schedule. BrightLocal found a business reappeared in only about half of repeat attempts on ChatGPT and AI Mode, and overlap between repeat result sets was 23% for ChatGPT 4. So one check proves nothing.
Run each prompt three times on two or more AI tools, from a few spots near your venue. Log who is named and which pages are cited. Ask guests how they found you and add an 'AI assistant' option.
| What to track | How | How often |
|---|---|---|
| Venue named for 5 core prompts | Manual log, 3 runs per tool | Monthly |
| Listings cited | Note URLs and sources shown | Monthly |
| Profile views, calls, direction requests | Google Business Profile insights | Weekly |
| Guests who mention AI | Booking form field and staff tally | Ongoing |
What have we done in restaurants, and what have we not?
We have not published results for a restaurant or cafe. Meru Trophy was a local-search programme for a Bengaluru shop, measured in Google clicks and rankings. We have not run the method for a restaurant or measured AI citations for a venue.
A trophy shop and a brunch cafe differ in how customers decide. Treat that as a method, not a promise. We do not guarantee citations, rankings or bookings.
Your first 90 days
Days 1-30
- Run 5 core prompts on two AI tools, three runs each, and save the log.
- Check name, address, hours and categories on Google, Yelp, Tripadvisor and OpenTable.
- Put the full menu on your site as text, with dietary notes.
- Add an AI option to your booking form's 'How did you hear about us?'.
Days 31-60
- Publish a visit page with neighbourhood, transit, seating and booking steps.
- Publish a dietary page covering vegan, vegetarian, gluten and nut handling.
- Add menu and opening-hours markup that matches the page.
- Reply to all recent reviews, positive and negative.
Days 61-90
- Publish a private dining or events page if you take groups.
- Ask regulars for honest reviews, with no reward and no filtering.
- Rerun the prompt log and compare it with day one.
- Update any page or listing that lost views or citations.
The first pages to publish
- Full menu as text with dietary notes. It answers diet questions with dish names an assistant can quote.
- Visit and booking page. It confirms location, hours and how to book from your own site.
- Dietary and allergen page. It serves high-need questions and reduces risk.
- Private dining and events page. It matches group-booking prompts with capacity and terms.
- Neighbourhood guide with your venue. It ties your venue to local searches in a useful way.
- Brunch, lunch and drinks menu pages. Each menu answers a different time-of-day search.
- Story and team page. It names the people and sources behind the food.

Method applies
We have not published results of our own in Restaurants and cafes yet. What transfers is the method, shown below.
We have not published results in restaurants. What transfers is the method: query research, answer pages, technical readiness and measurement, used so far on a Bengaluru local-search programme and a personal site, measured in Google clicks and rankings, not for a restaurant.

Frequently asked questions
Does a restaurant need special markup to appear in AI Overviews?
No. Google says you do not need new machine-readable files, AI text files or special markup. A page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet 1. Local business markup is optional, and it should match what diners see on the page.
Which listing matters most for restaurants?
In BrightLocal's data, Google Business Profile supplied 45.2% of restaurant citations, ahead of Yelp at 21.8% 3. The dataset covers the US, UK and Australia. Keep Google right first, then Yelp, Tripadvisor and any booking platform you use.
Should I put my menu on my site as text?
Yes, in our view. We found no study that compares menu formats, but text can be read, quoted and matched to a diner's dietary question, while a photo cannot be searched reliably. Add prices and dietary notes beside each dish. Opinion test: ask ChatGPT about a dish on your menu in a new chat. If it cannot name the dish or price, the text is not being read.
Can I offer a free dessert for a Google review?
How long before I see results?
We cannot give a reliable timeline for restaurants, because we have no published results in this field. AI answers also vary between runs, so track trends over months 4. We do not guarantee any citation or booking.
