AI SEO in Japan: how to get recommended by ChatGPT and Google AI search

The short answer

To be recommended by ChatGPT and Google AI search in Japan, publish natural Japanese pages that state price, scope, company details and proof, and let OAI-SearchBot and Googlebot read them. Google dominates mobile search, so start there, then check Bing for desktop and B2B buyers. Keep company facts identical across your site, Google listing and LINE, and follow the APPI on forms.

  • Google took 85.08% of Japanese mobile search referrals in September 2026, but only 59.27% across all devices, where Bing reached 31.41%.
  • Microsoft puts Japanese generative AI use at 24.7% of people aged 15 to 64 in June 2026, against 18.8% worldwide.
  • LINE had 99.0 million monthly users, so it is the main place customers message you, not the page AI cites.
  • Write native Japanese, not a translation, and give every page a company overview that a cautious buyer can verify.
  • Chalk Labs has no published Japanese client result. Its only regional proof is Meru Trophy in Bengaluru, India.

How do people in Japan search and use AI?

On phones they search on Google, and the rest of the picture depends on the device. StatCounter's September 2026 data shows Google with 85.08% of mobile search referrals in Japan, Yahoo! Japan with 11.79% and Bing with 0.91% 1. These shares count visits from a search engine, not searches typed, and they exclude AI assistants.

AI use is above the world average. Microsoft's AI Economy Institute reports that 24.7% of Japanese people aged 15 to 64 used a generative AI product in June 2026, up from 22.5% in March, against 18.8% worldwide 2. Japan had the largest relative change that quarter, about 10% 2. The measure counts any generative AI product, not ChatGPT alone.

Japan is also a heavily connected country. DataReportal counted 107 million internet users in October 2025, which is 87.0% of the population 3.

Microsoft estimates that 24.7% of Japanese people aged 15 to 64 used a generative AI product in June 2026, above the 18.8% world figure and up about 10% on the first quarter 2. It counts any generative AI product, not ChatGPT alone.

Build local prompts for Japan

Pick a business type and a place. Copy the prompts, then ask them in the AI assistants your buyers use and see who gets named.

Your 5 prompts

  • Shibuya dental clinic おすすめ
  • Shibuya dental clinic 料金
  • Shibuyaのdental clinic 口コミ
  • dental clinic Shibuya 比較
  • Shibuya dental clinic 安い

These patterns are modelled, not observed. おすすめ means recommended, 料金 means price, 口コミ means word-of-mouth reviews, 比較 means comparison and 安い means cheap. Replace the English type with its Japanese term before you test, keep each page in one language, and drop place and type pairs that do not occur in real life.

Why do mobile and all-device search shares differ so much?

Because the all-device view includes desktop, where StatCounter records a very different split. Across all platforms in September 2026, Google had 59.27%, Bing 31.41% and Yahoo! Japan 7.61% 4. On mobile, Bing was under 1% 1.

Do not read that as 'Bing has a third of Japanese search'. We do not know why Bing is so much larger on desktop, and StatCounter does not say. If your buyers use office PCs, test it. We did not verify how any AI assistant uses Bing data, so check your visibility in Bing as well as Google.

The table shows what to do for each audience.

Does Yahoo! Japan SEO need its own plan?

Probably not, but check before you assume. Wikipedia says Yahoo! Japan's search engine has been based on Google's technology since 2010 5. The same article reports a 2023 Nikkei Asia story that the Google partnership was due to expire in 2025, and that Yahoo! Japan was considering Naver's search technology 5.

We could not confirm what Yahoo! Japan uses today, so test it. Search your five most important phrases on Yahoo! Japan and Google, and compare the top results. If they match, one plan covers both. If they differ, treat Yahoo! Japan as a separate list to track.

What is LINE's role in finding a business?

LINE is the conversation channel, not the citation source. DataReportal reports LINE at 99.0 million monthly users, which is 80.5% of the population 3. YouTube reached 78.5 million, X reached 71.2 million, Instagram reached 63.2 million and Facebook reached 16.5 million, all as ad-reach estimates, not active users 3.

We did not test whether AI assistants read LINE content, so we make no claim about it. The working rule is to move the facts that matter onto a public page you control. A customer who asks on LINE how much a service costs should find the same range on your website.

How should you write Japanese pages for AI search?

Write them in natural business Japanese, with the answer in the first two sentences. Google's AI Overviews list Japan and Japanese as supported 6, so a Japanese question can pull a Japanese page. Google also says fully translated pages are not treated as duplicates, and that language versions should point to each other with reciprocal hreflang tags using the ja code 7.

Search habits help you choose headings. Japanese searchers often add a short qualifier to a place and a service. Our modelled list below uses common qualifiers. It is a starting point to test, not observed data.

Modelled Japanese query patterns (not observed)
PatternMeaningPage to publish
[place] [service] おすすめRecommended service in a placeComparison or selection guide
[service] 料金Price of a servicePricing page with ranges and what is included
[service] 口コミReviews of a serviceCustomer stories with real, permitted detail
[service] 比較Comparison of optionsFair comparison table with criteria
[service] とはWhat is a servicePlain-language definition page

What trust signals does a cautious Japanese buyer expect?

This is our recommendation, not a measured rule: show the facts a buyer can verify before they call. We found no cited research on Japanese trust norms for this page, so treat the list as good practice that costs little.

Publish a company overview page with the registered company name, address, representative name, founding year, phone and a named privacy contact. Repeat those details exactly on Google Business Profile and any LINE account. A mismatch gives an AI two answers and a buyer a reason to hesitate.

  • Prices as ranges, with what is included and what is extra.
  • Named people with roles on the about page.
  • Certifications and memberships you can prove, with dates.
  • A privacy policy in Japanese that matches your forms.

What do the APPI and the marketing laws mean for your site?

The Act on the Protection of Personal Information (APPI) is supervised by the Personal Information Protection Commission. Sharing personal data with a third party generally needs prior consent, with listed exceptions, and the purpose of use must be made known at or soon after collection, usually on a public notice 8. Sending data to a third party abroad generally needs consent that names the receiving country, unless the destination is approved or the recipient meets equivalent standards 8.

Marketing messages are governed separately. The Act on Specified Commercial Transactions requires prior opt-in for email advertising to consumers and consent records kept for three years after the last email advertisement, with fines up to JPY 1,000,000 9. The Anti-Spam Act adds opt-out details and record keeping, with company fines up to JPY 30,000,000 after a violated order 9.

The sources we read do not say how the APPI reaches a foreign firm without a Japanese presence, and they do not cover rules on advertising claims 8. Ask a Japanese lawyer about both. This page is not legal advice.

How does Japan differ from the global playbook?

Three things change. The language is not optional for domestic buyers. The split between mobile and desktop search is sharper than in most markets. And messaging runs through LINE, not email or SMS.

The technical basics stay the same. Because Bing is large on desktop, check that OAI-SearchBot and Bingbot are both allowed, since ChatGPT search crawls through OAI-SearchBot 10. Google adds no extra requirements beyond being indexed and snippet-eligible 11. The robots.txt guide has the steps.

For another Asian market with a strong local search engine, compare the South Korea page. For a financial hub with two official languages, see the Hong Kong page.

What has Chalk Labs actually done in Japan?

Nothing we have published. Chalk Labs has no Japanese client case or result, and this page does not imply one. Our only published regional result is Meru Trophy, a trophy shop in Bengaluru, India, which reached 27,300 Google clicks and 2.3 million impressions in 16 months 12.

That is a local consumer shop in another language and market. What transfers is the method: query research, answer pages, technical readiness and measurement. We do not guarantee rankings or citations.

Where should you start this month?

Fix access and company facts first, then publish five pages and measure.

  • Week 1: confirm robots.txt allows OAI-SearchBot and Googlebot, and register your site in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools.
  • Week 2: align your company name, address, phone and privacy contact across your site, Google Business Profile and LINE.
  • Week 3: publish a pricing page, a service scope page, a comparison page, a company overview and one case summary, each in native Japanese.
  • Week 4: run ten shortlist prompts in Japanese, note the date, brands named and sources cited, and repeat monthly.

Rules and platforms that shape results

Rules to know

  • Act on the Protection of Personal Information (APPI). Supervised by the Personal Information Protection Commission. Third-party sharing generally needs consent, purpose of use must be announced, and transfers abroad generally need consent naming the country.8
  • Act on Specified Commercial Transactions and Anti-Spam Act. Email advertising to consumers needs prior opt-in, consent records kept for three years after the last email advertisement, and opt-out details; company fines can reach JPY 30,000,000 after a violated order.9

Platforms that matter here

  • Google Search and Google Maps on mobile
  • Bing for desktop and workplace searches
  • Yahoo! Japan
  • LINE for customer messages
  • YouTube, X and Instagram for discovery
  • ChatGPT search (reads sites through OAI-SearchBot)
  • Google AI Overviews and AI Mode

What works in Japan

  • Write each key page in native Japanese with the answer in the first two sentences, and have a native editor review it.
  • Test your top five phrases on Google, Bing and Yahoo! Japan, and log where you appear.
  • Publish a company overview page with registered name, address, representative and a privacy contact.
  • Show price ranges in yen with inclusions, and publish a fair comparison table.
  • Keep company details identical across your site, Google Business Profile and LINE.
  • Add an ja hreflang pair if you also run English pages for overseas buyers.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Shipping machine-translated Japanese without a native review.
  • Assuming Google's mobile share covers your desktop-based B2B buyers.
  • Treating Yahoo! Japan as identical to Google without testing it.
  • Sending marketing email without a consent record.
  • Hiding company details that a cautious buyer wants to verify.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need Japanese pages to be recommended by ChatGPT in Japan?

For domestic buyers, yes. Google's AI Overviews support Japanese in Japan 6, and an assistant matches the language of the question. Add English pages as a separate version for overseas buyers, linked with hreflang 7.

Is Google the only search engine that matters in Japan?

On mobile it is close, at 85.08% of referrals, but across all platforms Google has 59.27% and Bing 31.41% 14. Check Bing if your buyers research on office computers, and test Yahoo! Japan separately.

How common is AI use in Japan?

Microsoft estimates 24.7% of people aged 15 to 64 used a generative AI product in June 2026, against 18.8% worldwide 2. It is a broad measure of any such product, so it does not show how many people ask AI to find providers.

What privacy law applies to my website in Japan?

The APPI covers personal information you collect, generally needing consent for third-party sharing and a stated purpose of use 8. Marketing email also needs prior opt-in under the Act on Specified Commercial Transactions 9. Ask a Japanese lawyer to confirm your case.

Does Chalk Labs work with Japanese businesses?

We have no published Japanese client result. Our regional proof is Meru Trophy, a trophy shop in Bengaluru, India, with 27,300 Google clicks in 16 months 12. We do not guarantee rankings or AI citations.
