AI SEO in Hong Kong: how to get recommended by ChatGPT and Google AI search
To be recommended by ChatGPT and Google AI search in Hong Kong, publish clear English and Traditional Chinese pages with price, scope, licence status and proof, and let OAI-SearchBot and Googlebot read them. Finance and Web3 firms face the highest bar: state your regulator and licence facts accurately, avoid advice, and follow the PDPO on every marketing list.
- Google took 90.44% of Hong Kong search referrals in September 2026, with Bing at 3.96% and Yahoo at 3.64%.
- Chinese and English are the two official languages; Cantonese is the main spoken language and formal writing uses Traditional characters, so most firms need two language tracks.
- Banking and finance contributed 24.9% of Hong Kong's GDP in 2023, so finance and Web3 pages compete in a crowded, rule-heavy field.
- The PDPO requires prior consent for direct marketing, with penalties up to HK$1 million and five years in prison for some breaches.
- Chalk Labs has no published Hong Kong client result. Its only regional proof is Meru Trophy in Bengaluru, India.
How do people in Hong Kong search and use AI?
They search on Google, with Bing and Yahoo trailing far behind. In September 2026 Google held 90.44% of Hong Kong search referrals, Bing 3.96% and Yahoo 3.64% 1. These shares count visits from a search engine, not searches typed, and they exclude AI assistants.
Hong Kong, a Chinese special administrative region, is almost fully online. DataReportal counted 7.16 million internet users in October 2025, which is 96.8% of the population, and 20.9 million mobile connections, equal to 283% of the population 2. Facebook's advertising reach was 4.70 million 2.
We found no Hong Kong figure for generative AI use. Microsoft's Q2 2026 diffusion report does not list Hong Kong as its own economy in the tables we read, and the DataReportal page has no AI chatbot data. So this page makes no claim about how many people in Hong Kong ask AI to find providers.
Market snapshot: Hong Kong
| Internet users (October 2025) | 7.16 million, 96.8% of the population2 |
| Mobile connections (end of 2025) | 20.9 million, 283% of the population2 |
| Google share of search referrals (September 2026) | 90.44%; Bing 3.96%; Yahoo 3.64%1 |
| Can speak Cantonese, English, Mandarin (2021 census, ages 5+) | 93.7%, 58.7%, 54.2%3 |
| Banking and finance share of GDP (2023) | 24.9%6 |
| Services share of GDP (2024) | 93.6%6 |
| Facebook ad reach (late 2025) | 4.70 million2 |
| Public data on Hong Kong AI assistant use | None found |
We found no Hong Kong estimate of generative AI use, and Microsoft's Q2 2026 country tables we read do not list Hong Kong separately. Google lists Hong Kong as an AI Overviews location; its language list is global and does not say which languages apply there 4.
Which language should your Hong Kong pages use?
Use English for international and professional buyers, and Traditional Chinese for local consumers. Chinese and English are the official languages. Cantonese is the main spoken variety, and formal writing uses Traditional Chinese characters 3. In the 2021 census, 93.7% of people aged 5 and over could speak Cantonese, 58.7% could speak English and 54.2% could speak Mandarin 3.
Spoken and written forms differ, and speakers often mix Cantonese and English in one sentence 3. A search may therefore arrive in English, Traditional Chinese or a mix. Google lists Hong Kong as an AI Overviews location. Its language list is global and includes Chinese (Traditional) and English, but the page does not say which apply in Hong Kong 4.
Google says each language version should be its own page, linked by reciprocal hreflang tags, and it supports script tags such as zh-Hant 5. The decision table below keeps the choice simple.
| If your buyers are... | Main page language | Add... |
|---|---|---|
| Global funds, founders and corporates | English | Traditional Chinese only for local hiring and press |
| Local consumers and families | Traditional Chinese | English summary for expatriates |
| Local small businesses | Traditional Chinese with English product terms | English pages for cross-border customers |
| Mainland visitors | Traditional or Simplified, tested | Separate URLs, never one mixed page |
Why is the bar higher for finance and Web3 firms?
Because finance is a large share of the city, so competition is dense, and because claims in this field are regulated. Wikipedia reports that banking and finance contributed 24.9% to Hong Kong's GDP in 2023 and that services made up 93.6% of GDP in 2024 6. An AI answering 'best crypto custody provider in Hong Kong' has many candidates.
The Securities and Futures Commission describes its approach as 'same business, same risks, same rules' and lists virtual asset trading platform operators among the intermediaries it licenses 7. The page we read does not set out licence conditions or promotion rules, and it was last updated in September 2023 7. The SFC site has a separate 'Virtual asset trading platform operators' section with regulatory requirements 7. Read it before you publish any product claim.
This is not legal or financial advice. Have a qualified compliance reviewer approve every page about regulated products, and show their name and date on the page.
What should a finance or Web3 firm publish first?
Publish pages that answer a cautious buyer's due-diligence questions in plain words. These are our recommendations, to be checked against the rules that apply to you. The table maps each page to the question it answers.
| Page | Question it answers | What to include |
|---|---|---|
| Licence and regulator page | Is this firm authorised? | Regulator name, licence type and number as shown on the public register, date checked |
| Fees page | What does it cost? | Fee table in HKD, what is included, what is extra |
| Risk and custody page | How are assets or data protected? | Plain description of controls, audits you can prove, named contact |
| Comparison page | How do the options differ? | Fair criteria, where an alternative wins, no performance promises |
| Team page | Who is accountable? | Named people, roles, verifiable credentials only |
Which platforms and directories matter in Hong Kong?
Google Search, Google Maps and Google Business Profile come first, with your own site as the source of record. Facebook reaches 4.70 million people 2, and LinkedIn matters for professional services. The DataReportal page we opened did not report WhatsApp or WeChat numbers, so check your own enquiry logs for which messaging app customers use.
Add the directories your sector uses, such as restaurant, property and professional association listings. Keep name, address, phone and licence details identical everywhere. We found no independent ranking of Hong Kong directories by AI citation, so choose by where your customers already look.
What do the PDPO, the anti-spam rules and the SFC mean for your pages?
The Personal Data (Privacy) Ordinance is overseen by the Privacy Commissioner. For your own direct marketing you generally need prior consent, with notice of the data and marketing categories and a free way to respond 8. Breaches of certain direct marketing provisions can carry a fine up to HK$1 million and up to five years in prison 8.
The Unsolicited Electronic Messages Ordinance keeps Do-Not-Call registers for fax, short messages and pre-recorded calls, while person-to-person calls fall outside it 9. There is no mandatory data protection officer or breach notification in the framework described, and cross-border transfer limits in section 33 were not yet in force 8.
Add the SFC for regulated products 7. The sources do not say how these laws reach a firm with no Hong Kong presence, so ask a Hong Kong lawyer. This page is not legal advice.
How does Hong Kong differ from the global playbook?
Two things stand out. The audience is bilingual by default, so one site often needs two language tracks. And the commercial centre of gravity is finance, where accuracy and licence status matter as much as ranking.
The technical basics stay the same, but licensed firms often hide behind firewall rules that block bots by default. Ask your web host whether OAI-SearchBot is allowed through 10. Google adds no extra requirements beyond being indexed and snippet-eligible 11. The robots.txt guide has the steps.
For another small, English-friendly financial hub, compare the Singapore page. For the Gulf's finance and Web3 centre, see the United Arab Emirates page. For the sector view, read AI SEO for Crypto and Web3.
What has Chalk Labs actually done in Hong Kong?
Nothing we have published. Chalk Labs is a Web3 and AI growth agency, but it has no Hong Kong client case or result, and this page does not imply one. We do not give legal or regulatory advice. Our only published regional result is Meru Trophy, a trophy shop in Bengaluru, India, which reached 27,300 Google clicks and 2.3 million impressions in 16 months 12.
That is a local consumer shop, not a regulated financial firm. What transfers is the method: query research, answer pages, technical readiness and measurement. We do not guarantee rankings or citations.
Where should you start this month?
Fix access and compliance facts first, then publish and measure.
- Week 1: confirm robots.txt allows OAI-SearchBot and Googlebot, and decide which language track your buyers need.
- Week 2: align your name, address, phone and licence details across your site, Google Business Profile and LinkedIn.
- Week 3: publish five pages: licence or credentials, fees, risk or service scope, comparison and team, each reviewed by someone qualified.
- Week 4: run ten shortlist prompts in English and ten in Traditional Chinese, note the date, brands named and sources cited, and repeat monthly.
